Microsoft’s Surface Mini was a real eight-inch Windows RT prototype, but it was canceled before its planned 2014 announcement and never went on sale. Photographs and specifications published later describe a compact, pen-focused tablet; Microsoft’s 2026 comments about the old device did not announce a replacement or revival.
Was the Surface Mini ever released?
No. Microsoft had a Surface Mini prototype and reportedly planned to unveil it at the May 2014 Surface Pro 3 event, but the company pulled it shortly before the presentation. In July, Microsoft’s earnings language referred to a decision not to ship “a new form factor,” which TechCrunch connected to the cancellation. The device never became a retail product. TechCrunch reported on the cancellation on July 22, 2014.
Evidence that it was more than a rumor emerged in 2018, when Windows Central published photographs it attributed to the prototype along with reported specifications. Those photographs and details establish that a device existed; they do not mean Microsoft released it or confirmed every specification in a public product announcement. Windows Central’s 2018 report described the prototype and its reported hardware.
What were the reported Surface Mini specs?
Windows Central’s account describes an eight-inch tablet designed around pen input, with a built-in kickstand and a felt-like integrated casing. The figures below are reported prototype details, not specifications for a product Microsoft sold.

Windows Central did not establish a complete retail configuration, such as a final model lineup or a confirmed keyboard accessory. Because Microsoft canceled the tablet, the reported prototype details should not be treated as a finalized consumer spec sheet.
Why did Microsoft cancel it?
Windows Central reported that Microsoft scrapped the Mini weeks before its scheduled announcement because it lacked enough unique selling points. That is the publication’s reported explanation, not a public Microsoft announcement setting out the company’s reasoning. TechCrunch separately linked the cancellation to Microsoft’s July 2014 reference to not shipping a new form factor.

The timing provides context. Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 3 on May 20, 2014, positioning it as a tablet that could replace a laptop. The official announcement described a 12-inch display, fourth-generation Intel Core processors, up to 8 GB of RAM, and up to nine hours of web-browsing battery life. The device also included a Surface Pen. Those were announced Surface Pro 3 specifications, not specifications for the Mini. Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 announcement gives the contemporary product details and positioning.
Did the Surface Mini run Windows RT?
Yes, according to the 2018 prototype report: it ran Windows RT 8.1. That distinction matters because the Mini was not a small Surface Pro running desktop Windows. Its reported Snapdragon processor and Windows RT software placed it in a different product category from the Intel-based Surface Pro 3 announced at the same event.

Is Microsoft bringing back the Surface Mini?
There is no confirmed revival in the evidence available here. In remarks reported by Windows Central on July 24, 2026, Microsoft executive Pavan Davuluri joked, “We’ve got a few laying around somewhere, I think.” Surface executive Brett Ostrum replied, “We typically don’t comment on future looking Surface roadmaps, Pavan.” The exchange acknowledges the old device but does not confirm a new model, release date, or product plan. Windows Central’s report of the 2026 comments provides the context.

No retail Surface Mini was released, so there is no official Surface Mini model to buy from Microsoft. Microsoft’s current Surface announcements do not show a retail Mini. A prototype might appear in historical coverage or private collections, but that is not the same as a supported consumer product; the available reporting does not establish an official sales channel or dependable secondhand availability.
