If Microsoft Store apps look greyed out in the Windows 11 Start menu, first check whether it is one app, several apps, or Microsoft Store itself that is unavailable. The appearance alone does not identify the cause. A pending restart, app compatibility or availability, account access, or a Store problem can all affect what you can open or install.
Did this begin after a Windows update? Is this a work- or school-managed PC? Those details help narrow the next steps. The seven fixes below are a cautious workflow assembled from Microsoft’s related support guidance; not every step applies to every case.
Start by identifying what is affected
- One app: focus on that app’s availability, compatibility, and repair options.
- Several Store apps: check for a pending restart, account or Store access issues, and whether the PC is managed.
- Microsoft Store is missing or will not open: use the Store-specific checks below; reinstalling an individual app will not solve a Store access problem.
Microsoft Support’s guidance for Store apps begins, “First, sign in to your Microsoft account. Next, work through these possible solutions in the order presented.” The steps here adapt its related recommendations to the greyed-out Start-menu symptom, which Microsoft does not identify as one specific fault. Try these seven fixes, from least disruptive to more targeted
1. Restart Windows and reopen the app
If Windows recently installed an update, restart the PC before troubleshooting further. Then try opening the app again from Start. If only one app is affected, note its name; if several are affected, treat the issue as potentially Store-wide or policy-related rather than assuming each tile is independently broken.

2. Check for Windows updates and app compatibility
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart if Windows asks you to.
- Confirm that the affected app supports Windows 11. The app’s Store listing or publisher can help establish compatibility and availability.

3. Update apps through Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Select Get updates and let available app updates finish.
Close and reopen the affected app after updates complete. If Store itself will not open, skip to the Store-specific checks rather than treating this step as possible.

4. Repair the affected app
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected app, open its menu, and select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair, if shown, then try the app again.
Microsoft says you can repair “some apps and programs” that are not running correctly. The control is not available for every app. Microsoft’s Windows repair guidance
5. Reset the app only if Repair is unavailable or does not help
Return to the app’s Advanced options page and select Reset, if offered. Read any app-specific prompts before proceeding: Microsoft’s general instructions do not specify the effects of Reset for every app. Try opening the app after the reset completes.

6. Reset the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand select OK. - Wait for the blank command window to close and Microsoft Store to open.
This is Microsoft’s documented Store-cache reset procedure. Running it does not establish that cache corruption caused the greyed-out tile. Microsoft’s guidance on Store search and installation problems
7. Reinstall the app, or follow the right escalation path
If the Store opens, select Library, find the app, and select Install if it is available. A missing or unavailable listing may be related to your account authorization, region, family settings, an app’s removal, device compatibility, or an update that still needs a restart—not necessarily the Start menu.

If Microsoft Store itself is missing, search for Microsoft Store from Start and check that you are signed in with a Microsoft account. Run wsreset.exe as described above, check Windows Update, and verify your time and location settings. Also search Start for Microsoft Store. These are Store-opening checks; they do not show that the Start tile itself is the underlying fault. Microsoft’s Store-opening guidance

When to contact support instead of resetting Windows
If the issue persists after the relevant app and Store checks, contact the app publisher for an app-specific failure or Microsoft Support for a broader Store or Windows problem. Microsoft’s recovery options, including Reset this PC, are intended for broader or persistent Windows problems.
