It let employees open desktops and applications that an organization had published through Remote Desktop Services (RDS) in a supported browser, without installing a Remote Desktop program on the local computer.
This was an access layer for an existing, administrator-managed RDS deployment—not a consumer service for connecting to any personal PC. An administrator still had to configure RDS, publish the web client, and give users the correct URL and credentials.
What Microsoft’s 2018 preview delivered
The preview was intended for virtualized apps and desktops delivered by an organization. Microsoft described the browser approach as a way to provide a consistent experience across devices, reduce local installation and maintenance work, and support situations such as kiosks or other non-personal computers.
The initial release, identified in Microsoft’s version history as web-client version 0.8.0, included:

The 18-language figure describes that 2018 preview release; it should not be treated as a current language count.
Could users really use Remote Desktop in a browser?
Yes, but only when an organization had deployed the required RDS infrastructure. A user did not install a client or configure a home computer directly. Instead, the administrator supplied a web address. The user signed in with the organization’s account and selected one of the desktops or applications published to that account.

What the user needed
- A desktop-class Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, or Linux device for the current service guidance
- A modern, supported browser
- An administrator-provided web-client URL
- Organization credentials and permission to use the published resource
Microsoft’s current end-user guidance does not support mobile devices. Browser names and minimum versions change, so administrators should verify the requirements for the version they deploy rather than rely on the browser list from the 2018 announcement.
Preview, general availability, and later releases
The preview was not the final product. Microsoft announced general availability on July 16, 2018, initially for deployments based on Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019 Preview. The web client could be added alongside the RD Web Access role by using PowerShell cmdlets.

The 2018 general-availability announcement listed single sign-on, audio output, full-screen mode, dynamic resolution, keyboard and mouse input, PDF printing, text copy/paste, and 18-language localization. It also listed desktop versions of Edge, Internet Explorer 11 or later, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari on Windows, macOS, Chromebook, and Linux. Those were launch-era statements, not a promise that every listed browser remains supported today.
How administrators had to deploy it
The web client depended on the organization’s RDS design. Microsoft’s administrator guidance identifies RD Gateway, RD Connection Broker, and RD Web Access as the relevant roles. It also calls for publicly trusted certificates for Gateway and Web Access and per-user, rather than per-device, client access licensing.

The requirements section specifically names Windows Server 2016 or 2019 for those roles, while the documentation’s applicability metadata also mentions Windows Server 2022 and 2025. Because those references may cover different supported scenarios or reflect documentation timing, administrators should confirm the role and version requirements for their intended deployment.
Typical publishing workflow
- Prepare and validate the existing RDS deployment, including Gateway, Connection Broker, Web Access, certificates, and licensing.
- Install Microsoft’s
RDWebClientManagementPowerShell module. - Retrieve the web-client package and import the RD Broker certificate.
- Publish the client to the production URL used by employees.
- Give users the URL and sign-in instructions, then test a published desktop or application.
When the broker certificate is renewed, the updated certificate must be imported into the web-client configuration and the client republished. Otherwise, users can encounter a server-authentication certificate error.

External access and proxy design
Microsoft documents support for Microsoft Entra application proxy. It does not support Web Application Proxy for this web-client configuration. That distinction affects how an organization exposes the service outside its network and should be settled before publishing the URL.

The browser experience was deliberately focused on common remote-work tasks rather than complete parity with a native Remote Desktop client.
- Clipboard: Users could copy text to and from the session, subject to administrator policy and the permission prompt.
- Printing: The Remote Desktop Virtual Printer generated a PDF in the browser, which the user could save or print locally.
- Display and input: The GA feature list included full screen, dynamic resolution, keyboard input, and mouse input.
- Audio: Audio output was listed at GA.
- Files: Current documentation describes upload and download through the client’s virtual drive feature. Administrators may disable or restrict this capability.
Later version-history entries record additional changes, including microphone input redirection and file-transfer support in 2021, WebAssembly support, and the new client’s 2024 general-availability milestone. These later additions should not be retroactively attributed to the March 2018 preview.
Web client versus a native Remote Desktop client

Microsoft positioned the web client for users who did not need all the advanced features of a native client. Organizations should therefore compare required peripherals, drive and device redirection, authentication behavior, and browser policy before making it the default access method.

What the preview did not mean
- It was not a standalone remote-PC product that anyone could point at a personal computer.
- It did not eliminate the need for an RDS deployment, certificates, licensing, identity controls, or administrator maintenance.
- It did not guarantee native-client feature parity.
- It did not make mobile phones and tablets supported endpoints under current guidance.
- It did not freeze browser compatibility at the versions listed in the 2018 announcement.
Why the 2018 announcement still matters
The preview established Microsoft’s browser-first route into organization-published Windows resources: users could reach an RDS desktop or application from a compatible computer without installing a local client, while administrators retained control over publication, authentication, redirection, and certificates. The service subsequently reached general availability in 2018 and continued to evolve, so the preview’s feature list and browser matrix should be read as a historical snapshot rather than current deployment documentation.
