Microsoft places Copilot first in its own list of Windows productivity apps, but the list does not show that Copilot was tested against the other apps or judged objectively best. It is Microsoft’s editorial selection, not a disclosed comparative ranking. The practical question is whether Copilot’s broad assistant features fit your work better than dedicated tools for tasks, calendars, notes, screenshots, focus, files, or browsing.
What Microsoft’s “best productivity apps” list says
Microsoft’s US-market article, “Best productivity apps in Windows to go from idea to done faster,” puts Copilot first, followed by Microsoft To Do, Windows Calendar, OneNote, Snipping Tool and screen recorder, Clock and focus sessions, Sticky Notes, File Explorer, and productivity features in Microsoft Edge. The page was published February 19, 2026, and updated March 25, 2026. Microsoft says features and functionality may change and availability can vary by region. See Microsoft’s list.
The page does not disclose comparative tests, scoring, an evaluation panel, or another method for establishing that the first entry outperforms the others. Its order tells readers how Microsoft chose to present these tools; it is not evidence of a shared benchmark. PCWorld’s Joel Lee and Mikael Markander questioned the placement in a February 23, 2026 editorial, describing it as a marketing push and drawing on their prior negative and mixed experiences with Copilot. Those are the authors’ assessments, not a controlled comparison or proof of how users generally feel. Read PCWorld’s commentary.
Why Microsoft puts Copilot first
Microsoft presents Copilot as a general assistant for answers, suggestions, planning, and content-related tasks. Its examples include extracting key points from a long email, turning notes in OneNote or Word into a checklist, and discussing travel plans. These are examples of intended uses from Microsoft, not independent results or evidence of a measured time saving.

The support documentation says file search can include synced OneDrive files, supports formats such as DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, TXT, PDF, and JSON, and provides permission controls in settings. Microsoft says Copilot should be installed by default on new Windows 11 PCs and can be installed if it is missing. The exact experience depends on the signed-in account: Microsoft distinguishes personal accounts from work or school accounts, and says feature availability can depend on subscription type. Which Windows app fits the job?
Microsoft’s list combines tools with different purposes. Choose by the task you need to complete, rather than treating their sequence as a ranking across one measure.

It can be used for productivity work: Microsoft describes it helping with questions, planning, and turning information into useful outputs such as a checklist. Its role is broader than a dedicated task list or calendar, because it can assist across different content and workflows. That breadth does not by itself show that it is more productive than those focused tools; the page naming it first supplies no comparative evidence.

For a concrete choice, use Copilot when you want conversational help working through information or a plan. Use To Do when you need reliable task lists and reminders, Calendar to manage appointments, OneNote for organized notes, or the other listed tools for their specific jobs. Compare the result in your own workflow, and check the available features for your account before depending on them.
