Organizations can buy Microsoft Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2016 LTSB, extending security-update coverage beyond the editions’ October 13, 2026 end-of-support date. Microsoft calls the program Extended Security Updates, not “Extended Support Updates.” It requires a paid license and edition-specific activation; the published 2016 LTSB instructions do not state a price.

Which Windows 10 2016 LTSB editions are eligible?

Microsoft’s dedicated ESU instructions cover two editions: Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2016 LTSB. The instructions say ESU extends use of those devices beyond October 13, 2026. This offer is distinct from Microsoft’s general Windows 10 ESU program, whose eligibility instructions specify version 22H2.

Microsoft’s release information lists October 13, 2026 as the end-of-updates date for version 1607/LTSB. That page showed build 14393.9514 and a latest revision date of September 14, 2026 when checked on September 27, 2026. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 release information.

What ESU provides—and what it does not

ESU is a paid subscription for enrolled organizations. Microsoft’s general Windows 10 ESU description characterizes coverage as critical and important security updates, not feature updates, nonsecurity fixes on request, design changes, or general support. That description is context for Microsoft’s ESU model; the dedicated 2016 LTSB enablement page does not set out separate 2016 LTSB-specific coverage terms. ESU should not be treated as a continuation of the full product lifecycle.

How to enroll and activate Enterprise 2016 LTSB

Microsoft’s published activation process requires a supported device, current servicing and security updates, an ESU license, and administrator access. Use an elevated Command Prompt for the Software Licensing Management Tool commands below.

  1. Install the prerequisites. Ensure the device has the September 2026 servicing stack update (KB5122874) and September 2026 Windows security update (KB5123099), or later updates. You also need administrative privileges.
  2. Purchase the ESU license and retrieve the MAK. An administrator with the Product Key Reader or Volume Licensing Administrator role in Microsoft Entra ID can view the key in the Microsoft 365 admin center under Volume licensing. If the key is unavailable there, Microsoft directs administrators to volume licensing support.
  3. Install the key. In an elevated Command Prompt, run slmgr.vbs /ipk <ESU MAK>, replacing the placeholder with the MAK for the edition and ESU year.
  4. Activate the applicable ESU year. Run slmgr.vbs /ato <Activation ID> with the Windows 10 2016 LTSB ESU Activation ID that matches the edition and year.
  5. Verify activation. Run slmgr.vbs /dlv. Microsoft says the license status should show “Licensed.”

Microsoft lists separate activation IDs for Enterprise and IoT editions and for Years 1, 2, and 3. Use the ID from its 2016 LTSB ESU enablement instructions; do not substitute an ID for another edition or year.

Offline activation

For a device that cannot activate online, Microsoft documents a separate process: obtain the Installation ID with slmgr.vbs /dti <Activation ID>, use Microsoft’s Product Activation portal to obtain a Confirmation ID, then apply it with slmgr.vbs /atp <Confirmation ID> <ActivationID>. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the portal and the matching activation ID.

IoT Enterprise key retrieval

For Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2016 LTSB, Microsoft says to contact the OEM partner to obtain the MAK. The Enterprise key-retrieval route through the Microsoft 365 admin center is not the documented route for this IoT edition.

How much does 2016 LTSB ESU cost?

The dedicated 2016 LTSB instructions establish that the offer is paid but do not provide a 2016 LTSB-specific price. Organizations should request a quote through their volume-licensing channel; IoT customers should also work with their OEM partner.

Do not assume the price for Windows 10 version 22H2 applies. Microsoft’s general commercial ESU page lists $61 USD per device for Year One, with the price doubling each consecutive year for up to three years. Those are terms stated for the general 22H2 program, not a confirmed 2016 LTSB price. That page also says licenses are purchased by year and a later-year purchase requires payment for Year One because coverage is cumulative. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 ESU program page.

Choose ESU or plan a migration

ESU can provide an organization with more time to operate eligible 2016 LTSB devices while receiving the covered security updates. It does not remove the need to plan for what happens after that extended coverage, and the published 2016 LTSB documentation does not specify a price or a migration-cost comparison.

  • Consider ESU if the eligible device must remain in service beyond October 13, 2026 and the organization can obtain the required license, updates, and activation support.
  • Plan a migration if the organization needs a supported platform beyond the ESU period or requires features and support that security updates alone do not provide.

For exact edition eligibility, prerequisites, keys, activation, and the currently published terms, consult Microsoft’s 2016 LTSB ESU instructions.
