Microsoft announced on May 2, 2023, that Microsoft Lists would load in half the time in the browser, progressive web app (PWA), and Teams. That is Microsoft’s claim—not a published independent benchmark—and the announcement does not establish that every list or tenant will see the same improvement. The update also described interface refinements, while leaving large-list limits in place.
What Microsoft announced about Lists performance
In its May 2, 2023 post, “Microsoft Lists: Easier, Better, Faster, Stronger”, Microsoft said it had improved Lists performance across the browser, PWA, and Teams. The company’s wording was: “we’ve supercharged Lists in the browser, in the PWA, and inside Teams to load in half the time.”
In other words, Microsoft described a 50% reduction in load time. The post did not specify a benchmark method, the baseline it used, or independent measurements. It also did not guarantee that every list, tenant, device, or network would experience that result. Treat “load in half the time” as Microsoft’s 2023 product announcement, not as a fresh measurement or a promise about a particular setup.
What changed in the interface
Microsoft said its performance work was accompanied by user-experience refinements to make people, content, and common actions more prominent. The announcement covered collaborator presence, applied filters, view navigation, and other adjustments to routine list work.

The post’s rollout language is historical. It does not establish which changes are currently available in every tenant, region, or plan. If a specific control is missing, check the Lists experience available to your organization rather than assuming that the 2023 announcement defines its present feature set.
Where Microsoft Lists fits
A Microsoft List is shared, structured data that a team can use to track and organize information. Lists can be created in SharePoint, the Lists app in Microsoft 365, or Microsoft Teams. Teams commonly use them for tasks and issue tracking; items can include different column types and attachments, and lists can support views, version history, approvals, and permissions. Why the update does not remove large-list limits
Microsoft says a list or library can store up to 30 million items. That storage maximum is not the same as the number of items a single database operation can handle efficiently. Microsoft documents a default 5,000-item List View Threshold: operations that involve more than that number can encounter threshold errors. The threshold is a resource-management measure intended to help maintain consistent database performance for people sharing the service.
So a faster interface does not mean an unfiltered view can process an unlimited number of rows. Microsoft’s current explanation of list and library limits is in its guidance for managing large lists and libraries.

Practical steps for working with large lists
Use a view that narrows the results
Views can sort, filter, group, and display selected items. Design views to return the subset people need for a task instead of showing the entire list. Microsoft recommends the modern experience for views showing many items and describes filtering as a way to control how much data is returned.
Consider indexing columns
Microsoft says indexing columns can improve performance when viewing items or switching views. An index uses additional database space, so choose indexes that support the views and filters people actually use rather than treating indexing as a cost-free fix.

Check the experience and the query separately
If a list feels slow, note whether it is open in a browser, PWA, or Teams, then examine the view’s filters and the scope of the items it returns. Device and network conditions can also affect what a user experiences. Microsoft’s 2023 announcement does not publish enough benchmark detail to compare those conditions or identify a cause for a particular slowdown.

The reliable takeaway is narrow: Microsoft announced in 2023 that Lists would load in half the time across its browser, PWA, and Teams experiences. The post does not provide independently verified timing data or prove identical results across different configurations. For large lists, view design, filtering, and indexing remain relevant because the documented 5,000-item threshold concerns database operations—not simply how quickly the interface loads.
