Microsoft has ended Paint 3D’s distribution through the Microsoft Store. The practical result is different for new and existing users: people cannot obtain it from the Store, while Microsoft says copies already installed continue to work. There is no single, officially designated replacement for every Paint 3D function.
What Microsoft changed
Microsoft’s official Windows client deprecation notice records two separate events:
| Event | Date or status |
|---|---|
| Deprecation announced | August 2024 |
| Microsoft Store removal | November 4, 2024 |
| Already-installed copies | Microsoft says they continue to work |
“Removed from the Microsoft Store” means the app is no longer available for download there. It does not mean that every existing installation was immediately disabled. Microsoft’s notice does not promise continuing feature updates or support for those installations.
Who had Paint 3D in the first place?
Paint 3D was preinstalled on some Windows 10 devices. It was not preinstalled on Windows 11 devices, so a Windows 11 PC generally would have needed the app to be installed separately before Store distribution ended.

What should you do if Paint 3D is already installed?
If Paint 3D is present on your Windows PC, Microsoft’s stated position is that the existing installation continues to work. Keep the app installed if you still depend on its workflow, and avoid uninstalling it merely because the Store listing disappeared; reinstalling later may not be possible through Microsoft’s normal Store channel.
For important projects, export working files to locations you control and keep ordinary image or model copies as appropriate. The Store removal itself does not establish that a particular file format or feature will stop working, but it does remove the official download route.

Microsoft’s alternatives depend on the job
Microsoft does not identify one complete Paint 3D successor. Its recommendations are divided by task:
| What you need to do | Microsoft’s named option | What the recommendation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| View or edit 2D images | Paint | A built-in Windows app for 2D image work |
| View or edit 2D images | Photos | A built-in Windows app for 2D image work |
| View 3D content | Babylon.js Sandbox | A separately named tool for viewing 3D content |
These are task-based alternatives, not a claim of feature parity. If you used Paint 3D for 3D scene creation, stickers, lighting, text, or its particular editing workflow, Microsoft’s notice does not say that Paint, Photos, or Babylon.js Sandbox reproduces those capabilities.

For ordinary 2D editing
Use Paint or Photos when your work is cropping, resizing, annotating, or otherwise editing conventional 2D images. Choose between them based on the tools and interface you prefer; Microsoft lists both for this category rather than naming one universal replacement.
For viewing 3D files
Microsoft points users to Babylon.js Sandbox for viewing 3D content. That recommendation addresses viewing; it should not be read as an assurance that the service is a drop-in replacement for Paint 3D’s complete creation and editing experience.

Why the retirement can feel abrupt
Microsoft’s 2017 Windows Experience Blog positioned classic Paint as a continuing free app and described Paint 3D as a separate free creative application that combined new 3D capabilities with familiar Paint features, including photo editing and 2D creation. That historical description explains why some users treated Paint 3D as more than a simple 3D viewer, but it does not indicate that the app remains available today.
The change also affects familiar Windows workflows. A 2024 Microsoft Community Hub discussion included a user referring to the right-click “Edit with Paint 3D” command and another commenter who wrote, “Paint pales in comparison to Paint3D as an editor.” Those comments are individual user experiences, not Microsoft’s assessment or a representative survey.

What the announcement does—and does not—say
- It establishes the August 2024 deprecation and November 4, 2024 Store removal.
- It says existing installations continue to work.
- It distinguishes Windows 10 devices that sometimes included Paint 3D from Windows 11 devices, where it was not preinstalled.
- It names Paint and Photos for 2D image viewing and editing and Babylon.js Sandbox for viewing 3D content.
- It does not designate a single full replacement, guarantee feature parity, or promise ongoing updates for installed copies.
The Bottom Line
Paint 3D is no longer downloadable from the Microsoft Store, but Microsoft says installed copies continue to work. Use Paint or Photos for 2D images and Babylon.js Sandbox for 3D viewing, while treating those recommendations as task-specific alternatives rather than a complete replacement.
