If your application officially supports both Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome, test both. Edge and Chrome share Chromium ancestry, so much of your test logic can be reused, but that does not make a Chrome run a substitute for running tests in Edge. A shared automation framework such as Playwright lets you cover both browser builds without maintaining separate test APIs.
What the Edge–Chrome comparison means for testing
Microsoft says Edge adopts nearly all Chromium project changes to the web platform, while retaining control over Edge and the ability to defer or reject changes. That creates substantial overlap, not a guarantee that every behavior, browser configuration, or release will be identical. Microsoft also maintains a tracker for changes that may affect site compatibility.
For test planning, distinguish three things:
- Shared test code: A common automation API can run the same scenarios in both browsers.
- Browser coverage: A test run still needs to launch the branded browser build named in your support promise.
- Engine coverage: Testing Chromium-based browsers does not cover other browser engines. Add them if your support matrix includes them.

Which browser should you use?

Do not treat a passing Chrome-only run as evidence that Edge has been tested. Separate runs can catch differences in browser builds, configuration, managed-device policy, or browser-specific regressions. That is a prudent coverage recommendation, not a claim that a particular defect rate has been measured.

Run Edge and Chrome with Playwright
Microsoft documents Playwright as an automation option for Edge and shows selecting Edge channels in Playwright projects. The following TypeScript configuration runs the same test suite in installed Chrome and Edge stable. Install the browsers or ensure the named browser channels are available in the test environment before running it.

npx playwright testPlaywright launches headless browsers by default. For visual debugging, run headed mode with npx playwright test --headed. Microsoft’s instructions also identify msedge-beta, msedge-dev, and msedge-canary as supported Edge channels. Add a preview channel only when you specifically need to validate pre-release behavior; do not silently substitute it for stable coverage.
Keep the browser project names distinct so CI results show which browser failed. Reuse the same scenarios where behavior should be common, and use project-specific configuration only when the product or environment genuinely requires it. Use Selenium for Edge when it fits your existing suite
Microsoft Edge WebDriver provides browser automation through WebDriver. Microsoft says current Edge automation requires Selenium 4; Selenium 3 is not supported. The Edge browser and Edge WebDriver are separate installed components, and Microsoft requires the first three parts of their four-part version numbers to match.

- Confirm that the first three version components match. For example, a browser version
MAJOR.MINOR.BUILD.PATCHmust align with a driver sharingMAJOR.MINOR.BUILD. - Run your Selenium 4 tests against Edge, and retain a separate Chrome run if Chrome is also in your support matrix.
Managed-device environments need an additional check: Microsoft notes that an administrator policy can block Edge WebDriver because it uses Edge DevTools. If the driver cannot start on a managed machine, ask the device administrator to review applicable policy rather than assuming the application itself is at fault. Choose coverage by users, releases, and environment
Start with the support matrix
List the browser products and operating systems you promise to support. Include Edge and Chrome separately if both are named, and test the actual supported stable builds. Add beta, dev, or canary coverage when preview releases matter to your team; those channels answer a different question from stable-release validation.

Account for managed devices
Browser policy can affect automation independently of application code. Test in environments representative of your users, especially when enterprise-managed devices or administrator-controlled browser settings are in scope.
Benchmark your own CI if runtime matters
No controlled Edge-versus-Chrome speed or test-reliability result is established by the official materials cited here. If runtime, flakiness, or resource use drives the decision, compare both browsers using the same CI image, test workload, and repeated runs. Record the environment and browser versions with results; otherwise, differences may reflect setup rather than the browser.

Edge tests pass only on a developer’s machine
Check that CI actually launches Edge rather than the default Chromium build. Confirm the selected channel, installed browser availability, and CI image setup. Keep the Edge and Chrome projects explicit in the test output.

Edge WebDriver fails to start
Compare the browser and driver versions and align their first three version components. Also verify Selenium 4 is in use. On managed devices, check whether administrator policy blocks WebDriver’s use of Edge DevTools.

A preview channel behaves differently from stable
Confirm which channel the test project selects. Use stable for stable support coverage; keep beta, dev, or canary runs separately labeled so preview findings are not mistaken for stable-release failures.
A passing Chrome test is being counted as Edge coverage
Inspect the test configuration and CI report to confirm an Edge browser process ran. Shared Chromium ancestry and shared test code do not prove that the Edge build was exercised.
A team wants a browser speed winner without comparable data
Use the same CI image and workload to measure both. The official sources cited here do not provide a controlled comparison that supports a universal winner.

Does Microsoft Edge use the same developer-tools protocol as Chrome?
Microsoft says Edge’s DevTools Protocol matches the APIs of the Chrome DevTools Protocol because Edge is built on Chromium. That protocol-level match does not establish that every browser behavior is identical.
Can one Playwright test suite cover more than Edge and Chrome?
Yes. Playwright is a cross-browser automation library. Configure the browser projects required by your support matrix; shared Chromium coverage alone does not cover browsers using other engines.
