Microsoft Edge command-line options are launch-time arguments: you add them when starting the browser, in a shell, shortcut, WebDriver configuration, or WebView2 host. The documented options below cover proxy routing, automatic DevTools, automation profiles, remote debugging, and development flags. They are useful examples, not a complete inventory of every Chromium or Edge switch.
How Edge command-line arguments work
An argument is placed after the Edge executable name. Options normally begin with --; options that carry a value use an equals sign, such as --proxy-server=http://proxy.example:8080. Arguments apply when a new Edge process starts. If an existing process handles the launch request, the requested behavior may not take effect.
Executable names and paths differ by operating system, installation scope, channel, version, and policy. Treat Microsoft’s documented paths as defaults rather than guarantees. The examples here target the browser process unless a section explicitly discusses WebDriver or WebView2.
Proxy command-line options
Edge normally follows the operating system’s network and certificate settings. These switches let you select a different proxy configuration for a particular launch.

--no-proxy-server
Starts Edge without using a proxy, even when the system has one configured. It overrides other proxy settings supplied on the same command line.
--proxy-auto-detect
Asks Edge to detect the proxy configuration automatically. Microsoft notes that this option is ignored when --proxy-server is also configured.
--proxy-server
Use one of the documented forms:
--proxy-server=<scheme>=<uri>[:<port>][;...]for mappings such as HTTP and HTTPS to different proxies.--proxy-server=<uri>[:<port>]for one proxy handling all traffic.--proxy-server=direct://for a direct connection.
A mapping can include a direct fallback. Copy the value exactly, including separators and ports, because a malformed mapping can silently route traffic differently from what you intended.
--proxy-bypass-list
Lists hosts or addresses that should bypass the proxy:

This option must be paired with --proxy-server. Matching syntax can be broader than expected: a wildcard or trailing-domain pattern such as *microsoft.com can also match imicrosoft.com. Test bypass rules with the least-privileged pattern that meets your need.

--proxy-pac-url
Points Edge to a proxy auto-configuration (PAC) file, for example --proxy-pac-url=https://network.example/proxy.pac. The PAC file determines which proxy, if any, is used for each request.
Open DevTools automatically
Use --auto-open-devtools-for-tabs when every newly opened tab in that launch should start with DevTools visible.

Startup boost can leave a minimal process running in the background; if DevTools does not open, disable Startup boost at edge://settings/system, fully exit Edge, and retry. For a single manual session, use Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, Command+Option+I on macOS, or F12 instead of a launch argument.

In Edge WebDriver, EdgeOptions.args is a list passed to the Edge process. Values use an equals sign. Microsoft’s examples include start-maximized and user-data-dir=/tmp/temp_profile; the list form does not require a separate value token.

Other launch-related properties include:
binaryselects a particular Edge executable.debuggerAddressattaches to an existing debugging endpoint.detachcontrols whether the browser remains after the WebDriver service stops.excludeSwitchesprevents switches that EdgeDriver would otherwise add; omit the--prefix in this list.
WebView2: browser arguments versus app arguments
WebView2 has an important distinction. When a WebView2 app is launched through WebDriver, ordinary args are passed to the application. They are not necessarily browser-process switches. To pass arguments to the underlying Edge browser process, use the WebView2 additionalBrowserArguments capability. Confusing these two locations can make a correctly spelled switch appear to do nothing.

WebView2 browser flags are primarily development and diagnostic controls. Microsoft’s Edge team states: “Apps in production shouldn’t use WebView2 browser flags, because these flags might be removed or altered at any time, and aren’t necessarily supported long-term.” Keep experimental arguments out of production deployments.
Headless, isolated profiles and remote debugging
Microsoft’s DevTools MCP setup documentation shows several launch examples used by that tooling:

The viewport and isolated examples are documented in the MCP context; do not assume every wrapper-specific option is a universal Edge switch. Protect a remote debugging port from untrusted networks and avoid exposing it beyond the machine or controlled test network.
Finding the Edge executable
Stable, Beta, Dev, and Canary installations use different locations. Microsoft documents default locations for Windows, macOS, and Linux for most channels, but paths can change with per-user installation, version, and group policy. If a command reports that msedge or microsoft-edge cannot be found, locate the installed executable and use its absolute path, then quote paths containing spaces.

/Applications/Microsoft Edge.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft EdgeOn Windows, a shortcut’s Target field is another reliable place to see the executable path. Add arguments after the closing quote, separated by spaces.

- Open the shortcut’s properties.
- In the Target field, leave the quoted executable path unchanged.
- After the closing quote, add a space and the argument, such as
--auto-open-devtools-for-tabs. - Apply the change and launch Edge from that shortcut.
Do not put the argument inside the executable’s quoted path. If the shortcut launches an existing Edge process, close every Edge window and background process first.
Security and stability warnings
Some flags weaken browser protections. Microsoft’s command-line security policy uses --disable-gpu-sandbox as a warning example: “You’re using an unsupported command-line flag: –disable-gpu-sandbox. This poses stability and security risks.” Do not use that flag as a general troubleshooting fix.
A managed policy can suppress the warning on supported Windows and macOS instances, but suppressing a warning does not make a flag safe. Chromium-owned flags are not controlled by Microsoft Edge and can change independently. Prefer documented, task-specific options and remove diagnostic flags after testing.
Troubleshooting common failures
DevTools does not open
Close all Edge processes, disable Startup boost at edge://settings/system, and run the command again. Confirm that the command starts the intended channel rather than another installed Edge build.

The command is not recognized
Use the executable’s full path, check the channel-specific installation, and quote paths with spaces. On macOS and Linux, verify executable permissions and shell escaping.
Proxy settings appear ignored
Check for conflicting switches. --no-proxy-server overrides other proxy settings, and --proxy-auto-detect is ignored when --proxy-server is present. If using a bypass list, ensure --proxy-server is also supplied and review wildcard matching.
WebDriver changes have no effect
Confirm that the argument is in EdgeOptions.args, uses the expected equals-sign format, and targets the browser process. For WebView2, move browser-process arguments to additionalBrowserArguments.
A security warning appears
Identify the exact flag, remove unsupported or experimental switches, and consult your organization’s policy owner. Do not disable security controls merely to silence the warning.

No. Executable paths, installed channels, policies, and process behavior vary by Windows, macOS, and Linux. Verify the path and test the exact Edge build you deploy.
Can I make a shortcut use a different Edge profile?
Yes. A profile directory can be supplied as a value such as user-data-dir=/tmp/temp_profile, but use a separate directory for automation rather than sharing an active personal profile.
Is there an official complete list of every Edge switch?
