It was an optional preview for eligible devices—not an update made available to every Windows user at once.
What was Windows 11 25H2?
Microsoft described 25H2 as its annual Windows 11 feature update for 2025. The company said it would be delivered as an enablement package (eKB), with 24H2 and 25H2 sharing a servicing branch. In practical terms, Microsoft framed 25H2 as an update building on the existing servicing path, rather than announcing a separate full platform rebuild. Microsoft’s August 29, 2025 announcement also said that Insiders would continue receiving servicing updates through the usual monthly Windows Update process after installing it.
Who could install the first 25H2 preview?
Individual Release Preview Insiders
Release Preview Insiders using PCs that met Windows 11 hardware requirements could opt in through the seeker experience in Windows Update. Microsoft’s announced route was to open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. The preview was optional; being a Windows user alone did not make a device eligible for that Insider offer.
Commercial organizations
Organizations enrolled in Windows Insider Program for Business could begin validating 25H2 through Windows Update for Business or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Microsoft defined a commercial device for this announcement as one not running Home and managed by an IT administrator, or one with a volume license key, commercial ID, or domain join. Its launch post also pointed to downloadable ISOs and noted in a September 10, 2025 update that they were then available.

What did Microsoft call out in the launch announcement?
Two named feature removals
Microsoft identified PowerShell 2.0 and Windows Management Instrumentation command-line (WMIC) as removals. These are the specific removals highlighted in the launch announcement; the post should not be read as a complete inventory of every change in the release.
Controls for select pre-installed apps
Microsoft said Enterprise and Education administrators could use Group Policy or an MDM configuration service provider (CSP) to remove select pre-installed Microsoft Store apps. The announcement described this as an organization-level control for those editions, not a general removal option for every Windows 11 edition.

What did “testing” mean—and what did it not mean?
Release Preview provided an early channel for eligible Insiders and organizations to validate the update before general availability. Preview access did not mean that every feature was final, reached every device simultaneously, or was available to the public. Microsoft’s later release notes describe gradual, phased rollouts in which availability can vary by device; some feature notes also identify device and market as factors. A September 19, 2025 Dev Channel post separately explains that Controlled Feature Rollout can make features available to subsets of Insiders and cautions that active-development features may change, be removed, or never ship beyond Insider channels. That warning concerns experimental Dev builds, not a claim that all Release Preview features were experimental.

Microsoft was still publishing 25H2 Release Preview builds in September 2026. Its September 10 notes listed build 26200.9539 for 25H2 and build 26100.9539 for 24H2. The 25H2 notes covered changes including File Explorer behavior, Emoji 17.0 support, a Tips widget, Bluetooth reliability, an accessibility option to open apps maximized, Magnifier visuals, additional precision-touchpad gestures, Copilot-key remapping, Camera roll backup, font-script support, and Windows Recovery improvements. These were rollout notes, not a guarantee that every listed change would arrive on every device at once. See Microsoft’s September 10, 2026 Release Preview notes for the build-specific details.

Microsoft had also announced Windows 11 version 26H2 for Release Preview on August 27, 2026. That update was likewise described as an enablement package on a servicing branch shared with 24H2 and 25H2, with general availability expected later in calendar 2026 but no precise date in that announcement. The 26H2 announcement places 25H2 in the context of Microsoft’s continuing annual release cycle; it does not establish 25H2’s exact general-availability date or edition-specific support end dates.
