Microsoft now markets Edge for Android as an extension-powered browser, but that does not mean every desktop extension works on every Android phone. Support arrived through a staged rollout, and Microsoft cautions that availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version.
What extensions do in Edge for Android
Extensions are software programs that add functions to a browser. Microsoft describes uses that include productivity, shopping, entertainment, security, and customization. Examples in Google Play’s current Edge listing include VPNs, ad blockers, password managers, video speed controls, and custom scripts. They are features within the Edge app, not a separate hardware product.
Google Play currently titles the app “Microsoft Edge: Extensions” and describes it as “your extension-powered browser.” The listing showed 100M+ downloads and an update dated September 28, 2026, when accessed October 4, 2026. That download band applies to the Edge app, not to extension users, and the listing does not provide a complete Android extension catalog. Google Play: Microsoft Edge
How Edge Android extensions arrived
February–March 2024: a flighted feature
Microsoft’s archived mobile Stable release notes, in the version 122 period, said the Extensions feature was still in flight. They also noted that extensions could be disabled by Intune Mobile Application Management policy and said the feature could be turned on with the Android Extension flag at Edge://flags. September 2024: no universal Stable launch date
In a Microsoft-hosted Q&A, a support specialist said features generally reach Stable as it catches up with Canary. Users in the thread also described a limited selection of extensions and flag-based access. Current positioning
The current Play listing presents Edge as extension-powered, while Microsoft’s developer page cautions that feature availability and functionality may vary by device type, market, and browser version. Which extensions work on your Android phone?
The official sources do not provide a complete Android-specific catalog or a device-by-device compatibility matrix. Microsoft’s general guidance says Chromium extensions can be published to Microsoft Edge Add-ons with minimal code changes, but that does not establish that any particular extension works on Android. Check the extension’s availability and functionality in your own Edge version and market rather than assuming desktop compatibility.
- Check the function: confirm the extension offers the feature you need on mobile.
- Check compatibility: availability can differ by device, market, and browser version.
- Review permissions: consider what access an extension requests before enabling it.
The current official material does not provide a reliable Android-specific installation walkthrough. The old 2024 flag instructions should not be treated as the current procedure.

What the Manifest V3 change means
Microsoft’s August 7, 2026 post says the Edge consumer transition away from Manifest V2 (MV2) extensions and toward Manifest V3 (MV3) began in August 2026, with a goal of completing the transition by the end of 2026. The rollout starts in Canary, Dev, and Beta before broadening to Stable. Microsoft also reported that 95% of the top MV2 extensions on Edge Add-ons had moved to MV3, and that 58 MV2 extensions had meaningful usage, three of which lacked a publicly available MV3 equivalent. Those figures describe the Edge Add-ons website, not Android-specific availability. They do not show that a named extension has already stopped working on Android.

What to take from the rollout
Edge for Android is now promoted as an extension-powered browser, following a rollout that Microsoft described as still in flight in its 2024 Stable notes. The sources support neither a guarantee that every user has the same options nor a claim that desktop extensions all work on Android. For a specific extension, compatibility on your device and browser version is the practical question.
