To remove a security key from a personal Microsoft account, open Advanced security options, expand the security-key method, select Remove, and confirm. If you still need access, add and verify another sign-in method first. Removing the account registration does not reset or erase the physical key.

Before you remove it, identify what you’re removing

A security key is a physical device used to sign in. Its registration with your Microsoft account is separate from any credentials stored on the device. A passkey is managed through Microsoft’s passkey controls and may also be stored with Windows or another credential provider.

The steps below are for a personal Microsoft account. Work or school accounts use an organization-managed Security Info page, and available methods can depend on IT policy.

Remove a security key from a personal Microsoft account

  1. Sign in to your personal Microsoft account and open Advanced security options.
  2. Expand the security-key verification method.
  3. Select Remove, then select Remove again to confirm.

If you are replacing the key or need another way to sign in, add and verify the replacement method before removing the old one. Microsoft recommends keeping another way to sign in or verify your identity; see its guidance on keeping a Microsoft account secure.

What removal does—and does not do

Removing the security-key method revokes its registration for signing in to that Microsoft account. It does not establish that credentials stored on the physical key have been erased. Microsoft distinguishes deleting a key from account security information from resetting the device to factory defaults; a device reset clears data and credentials stored on the key. Reset instructions vary by manufacturer, so consult the key maker before selling, giving away, or disposing of it. See Microsoft’s security-key guidance.

If you meant a passkey instead

In Advanced Security Options, expand the passkey entry and choose Remove. Microsoft says a removed passkey can no longer be used to sign in to the account, and recommends adding new sign-in information first. For work or school accounts, remove the passkey from the organization’s Security Info page and also from where it is stored, such as Windows Hello Passkeys. A passkey held in Windows or a synced credential manager may require separate removal through that provider. See Microsoft’s passkey management instructions.

Work or school account: use the organization’s Security Info page

For an account provided by an employer or school, use the organization’s My Profile or Security Info workflow rather than the personal-account dashboard. Deleting the key there stops its use with that work or school account; it does not reset the physical device. If the removal option is missing or the page differs, contact the organization’s IT administrator. Microsoft notes that security-key availability may depend on organization policy in its work or school security-key instructions.

If you lost the key or can’t sign in

You can still sign in another way

If you know your password and can use another verification method, add a new method and confirm it using the code sent to its destination. Then remove the lost key from security settings. Microsoft describes this sequence in its guidance for troubleshooting verification-code issues.

You can’t access the account

Use Microsoft’s sign-in helper if you cannot sign in. Do not assume support can manually change the account’s security details. Avoid removing every remaining security method: Microsoft says removing all security information from a personal account can put it into a restricted state for 30 days, during which it will not accept further changes or additions to security settings or billing information. Details are in Microsoft’s sign-in verification method removal guidance.
