A Microsoft 365 profile photo can take different amounts of time to appear in different apps: Microsoft says up to 24 hours in SharePoint Online and up to 48 hours in classic Outlook. For Teams, Microsoft gives no fixed deadline. First confirm the new photo saved to your work or school profile; then check the guidance for the app showing the old image.
How long does a Microsoft 365 profile photo take to update?
There is no single propagation deadline for every Microsoft 365 service. These are the timeframes Microsoft documents for the specific apps:

These are app-specific statements, not a promise that every Microsoft 365 app will update within 24 or 48 hours. A photo that has saved successfully can still appear differently across services while they catch up.

- Sign in to the My Account portal with the work or school account whose photo you changed.
- Check whether the current profile photo reflects the new image. If editing is allowed, Microsoft’s instructions use the edit icon on the current photo to update it.
- If the photo is still old there, try the update again if the edit control is available. If it is missing or unavailable, your organization may restrict profile changes; ask your IT or HR team.
Microsoft says most static image files are supported for work or school profile photos where editing is permitted, but HEIC and animated GIF images are not supported. If the portrait or landscape image does not fit the square display well, Microsoft suggests adding borders with an image editor before uploading.
If the old photo appears in Teams
Microsoft notes that Teams profile-picture settings can take time to update across channels. Its guidance gives no guaranteed wait period, so check the photo on the work or school profile before treating Teams’ delay as a failed upload.

Microsoft says, “Clearing your Teams cache may help it update quicker.” Treat this as a possible nudge, not a guaranteed fix for every stale picture. See Microsoft’s Teams profile-picture guidance for the supported change-photo workflow.
If classic Outlook still shows the previous photo
Microsoft says a new profile photo can take up to 48 hours to appear in classic Outlook. Changing the photo through classic Outlook’s account information flow redirects to the browser profile-photo page. If the Change link is missing, Microsoft says IT or HR may control the photo or other profile information. In that case, contact your organization rather than repeatedly trying to edit a setting you cannot access.

If SharePoint Online still shows the previous photo
SharePoint Online’s photo synchronization depends on a photo stored in Microsoft Entra. Microsoft says a photo is evaluated when a profile photo is requested in SharePoint. For a new user or a photo timestamp older than 24 hours, SharePoint makes a synchronization request. If the Entra photo is absent, or the SharePoint photo already matches it, no change is needed; if the photos differ, SharePoint syncs the photo to its repository.

- The photo must exist in Microsoft Entra.
- The SharePoint profile’s Picture property must be editable.
- The My Site Host site collection must have quota available for new pictures.
Microsoft says guest user profile photos are not synchronized to SharePoint Online. It also warns against manually changing user-photo properties in the User Profile. If the delay persists or one of the conditions may not be met, ask your SharePoint or Microsoft 365 administrator to investigate.
When to contact your administrator
Contact your organization’s IT or HR team if you cannot edit the work or school photo, the Change or edit control is unavailable, or the photo remains mismatched after the timeframe Microsoft gives for the affected service. For SharePoint, an administrator can check the Entra photo, whether the Picture property is editable, and available My Site Host quota without relying on unsupported manual edits.
