It marked volume production of 232-layer 3D TLC NAND at Micron’s Singapore fabrication facility, with packages shipping to customers and appearing in selected Crucial SSDs. It did not mean that every Micron or Crucial drive immediately contained the new memory, nor that layer count alone guaranteed a faster SSD.
What Micron announced on July 26, 2022
Micron said it was the first company to ship 232-layer 3D NAND in production volume. The qualification matters: this was a manufacturing and shipment milestone, not merely a laboratory demonstration and not a universal retail launch. The announcement covered 232-layer TLC NAND, produced at Micron’s Singapore fab.
Initial shipments took two forms:
- NAND components supplied to other customers for use in their products.
- Selected Crucial-branded consumer SSDs using the new memory.
Micron’s announcement also described additional products as forthcoming. The original release is available from Micron Investor Relations.
Why stacking more NAND layers matters
Vertical density, not an automatic speed rating
In 3D NAND, memory cells are stacked vertically instead of relying only on larger two-dimensional layouts. Adding layers can put more bits into a similar die area, potentially lowering cost per bit, enabling higher-capacity packages and freeing board space in devices such as laptops, phones and data-center SSDs.

Micron linked its 232-layer design to density, package size, energy efficiency and product flexibility. Those are properties of the flash component, however. A finished SSD’s speed, latency and endurance also depend on its controller, firmware, interface, cache architecture, capacity, cooling and workload. Micron explains the design trade-offs in its technical overview at Micron’s 232-layer NAND article.
Micron’s published 232-layer figures
The figures below are Micron’s launch claims and comparisons, not independent benchmarks for every SSD that uses the NAND.
| Item | Micron’s stated detail |
|---|---|
| Original memory type | 232-layer 3D TLC NAND |
| TLC areal density | 14.6 Gb/mm² |
| Density comparison | Micron claimed 35% to 100% greater areal density than competing TLC products available at the time, using its stated comparison set |
| Package size | 11.5 mm × 13.5 mm |
| Package-size comparison | 28% smaller than the previous Micron generation |
| Interface positioning | Backward-compatible support for legacy controllers and systems |
| Intended markets | Mobile devices, PCs, automotive systems, intelligent-edge products and data centers |
A smaller package and higher bit density can help product designers fit more storage into constrained systems. They do not, by themselves, establish a particular retail drive’s sustained-write rate, endurance rating or power draw.
What “now shipping” meant in practice
Components were shipping before universal retail availability
Micron was shipping the NAND packages to customers that would build their own storage products. Some selected Crucial SSDs were also shipping with the memory. That is different from saying that all Crucial models, all capacities or all retail inventory had switched to 232-layer NAND.

Model names do not prove the NAND revision
Crucial product families can change components during later production cycles. The company’s catalog qualification says NAND series may transition over time; therefore, a model number or retailer listing is not conclusive evidence of the flash inside a specific unit. See the Crucial P3 Plus catalog qualification before treating a current SKU as 232-layer-specific.
Products that followed the milestone
| Date | Product or event | What it established |
|---|---|---|
| July 26, 2022 | 232-layer TLC NAND | Volume production in Singapore; component shipments and selected Crucial SSD shipments |
| December 2022 | Micron 2550 client SSD | Micron announced a client SSD built with 232-layer NAND for consumer, business and gaming PC platforms |
| April 16, 2024 | 232-layer QLC NAND | Micron announced mass production and shipments to selected Crucial products and enterprise customers; Micron 2500 samples were part of the rollout |
Micron 2550
The Micron 2550 extended the 232-layer story into a client SSD. Micron described it as using 232-layer NAND and targeting mainstream PC platforms. Its product brief is available at Micron’s 2550 product brief, and the announcement is at Micron Investor Relations. This is primarily an OEM/client drive rather than a consistently stocked retail product.
Micron 2500 and the later QLC stage
On April 16, 2024, Micron announced that its 232-layer QLC NAND had entered mass production. The company cited up to 28% more compact bit density than the competing products in its comparison, NAND I/O of 2,400 MT/s, a claimed 50% I/O improvement over the prior generation and a claimed 24% read-performance improvement. Those figures are vendor comparisons for the QLC announcement, not universal results for every 232-layer SSD.
The Micron 2500 NVMe SSD was identified with 512GB through 2TB capacities and 22 × 30 mm, 22 × 42 mm and 22 × 80 mm form factors. The announcement covered selected Crucial SSDs, enterprise-storage shipments and sampling to OEM PC manufacturers; it was not a promise of immediate worldwide retail availability. Details are in Micron’s QLC announcement.

232-layer TLC and 232-layer QLC are different milestones
TLC
TLC stores three bits in each cell. It is generally chosen where a product needs a stronger balance of performance, endurance and density.
QLC
QLC stores four bits per cell. Its greater density can make high-capacity storage more economical, but buyers should examine endurance and sustained-write behavior, especially after an SSD’s dynamic SLC cache is exhausted.
Micron’s July 2022 announcement was about TLC. The April 2024 announcement was a later QLC development. Combining them into one undated “232-layer product” description hides an important difference in expected workload behavior.

How to interpret the “industry first” claim
The precise, supportable wording is that Micron said it was the first company to ship 232-layer NAND in volume. “First” can mean production, shipment, sampling or public disclosure depending on how companies define the milestone. Attributing the superlative and specifying the production-volume context avoids turning a dated corporate claim into an unqualified permanent ranking.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changed for the market
The important change was manufacturing scale: more bits per package, smaller component footprints and a platform that Micron could extend into client, mobile, automotive, edge and data-center designs. Consumers could eventually encounter products based on the technology, but the benefit arrived through complete SSD designs and OEM systems rather than through layer count alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does “232-layer NAND” mean an SSD is automatically faster?

Can I confirm that a current Crucial SSD contains 232-layer NAND from its model name?
Not reliably. Crucial says NAND series can change during future production cycles, so the exact unit or current manufacturer documentation must confirm the revision.
Was Micron’s 2022 announcement about QLC NAND?
No. The July 26, 2022 milestone concerned 232-layer TLC NAND. Micron announced a separate 232-layer QLC production milestone on April 16, 2024.
The Bottom Line
Micron’s 232-layer NAND was a genuine July 2022 production milestone. Its main contribution was higher flash density and smaller packages, while later TLC and QLC products brought the technology into different SSD markets. For buyers, the complete drive specification and exact revision matter far more than the “232-layer” label by itself.
