Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra says memory supply-demand conditions are expected to be tighter in calendar 2027 and 2028 than in 2026. The warning centers on Micron’s business customers, especially demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) used in AI systems and DRAM used in servers. It is not a specific forecast for the price or availability of RAM kits sold to PC owners.

Will RAM shortages get worse in 2027?

Micron’s outlook is for tighter memory and storage supply-demand conditions in 2027 and 2028 than in 2026. Ars Technica reported the comments after Micron’s Q4 FY2026 earnings call on October 1, 2026. Mehrotra said, “Overall, supply-demand environment is only getting tighter.” This is management’s forward-looking assessment, not a measured estimate of how many retail RAM products will be unavailable.

Ars Technica also reported that about 75 percent of Micron’s memory output for 2027 was already accounted for. That figure applies to Micron, not the entire global memory market. The report said a large part of Micron’s 2027 HBM volume had been sold at prices “much higher than 2026 prices.” This is a relative comparison, not a published price or a forecast for consumer RAM.

Why is Micron warning about a RAM shortage?

AI demand is drawing on specialized memory

HBM is a specialized memory product used in AI systems, while server DRAM serves data-center and enterprise workloads. These products are not interchangeable with the memory modules a person installs in a desktop PC. However, they compete for investment, manufacturing capacity and other resources across a memory business. Ars Technica’s account of the call describes strong demand for AI-related HBM and server memory as central to the tighter outlook.

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) Up to 3200MHz CL16-20-20-38 1.35V Intel XMP AMD EXPO Computer Memory – Black (CMK32GX4M2E3200C16)
  • Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
  • Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
  • VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds

New capacity takes time to contribute

Adding clean-room capacity does not make finished memory chips available immediately. Ars Technica reported that Micron’s new capacity would ramp gradually, while other supply headwinds would remain. That helps explain why expanded facilities do not necessarily relieve tight conditions at once; the report does not give a precise date when supply will catch up.

Micron’s results provide context, not proof of future shortages

Micron reported fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on September 30, 2026. The company said its fiscal year ended September 3, 2026, and reported revenue of $133.19 billion for fiscal 2026. Micron attributed its strong results in part to AI-driven demand. Those company-reported financial results show the business context for the warning, but do not independently establish how severe future shortages will be.

Could the warning affect PC RAM prices or availability?

It could, but the available reporting does not establish a particular retail price increase, stock shortage, or date when consumer memory might be affected. Ars Technica describes consumer devices as a possible spillover from manufacturers prioritizing capacity for higher-demand products. That is a possibility, not evidence that every PC memory type or retailer will face the same conditions.

If you are considering a RAM upgrade, make the decision based on your computer’s needs and compatibility rather than treating this warning as proof that you must buy immediately. Before choosing a kit, check your PC or motherboard documentation for supported memory generation, form factor, maximum capacity and compatible configurations. A DDR5 kit, for example, will not fit or work in a system that requires a different generation or form factor.

What the 2027 warning does—and does not—tell PC owners

  • It does tell you: Micron expects its memory and storage supply-demand environment to be tighter in calendar 2027 and 2028 than in 2026, according to remarks reported by Ars Technica.
  • It does not tell you: how much a retail PC RAM kit will cost, whether a specific product will be in stock, or when consumer supply will return to normal.
  • Keep the product categories separate: HBM, server DRAM and consumer PC memory serve different uses; tightness in one category should not be translated into a precise retail forecast for another.
