For Michigan’s November 3, 2026 general election, absentee voting lets you complete a ballot away from an early voting site and return it to your clerk; early in-person voting lets you vote at your assigned site during its local schedule. Most absentee ballots must reach the clerk by 8 p.m. on Election Day. The state’s early-voting period runs for at least nine days through Sunday, November 1, but locations and hours vary. Check Michigan.gov/Vote for your assigned site and current details.
Which voting option fits your situation?
| Factor | Absentee voting | Early in-person voting |
|---|---|---|
| Where you complete the ballot | At home or at the local clerk’s office | At your assigned early voting site |
| What to arrange | Request a ballot by the application deadline, then allow time to receive and return it | Look up your assigned site and its operating dates and hours |
| How your vote is cast | Return by mail, drop box, or to the clerk; you may also take a completed absentee ballot to an early voting site for verification and tabulation | Complete the ballot at the site and insert it into a tabulator |

| Registering or updating an address within 14 days of an election | Go to the local clerk with proof of residency; eligible voters can register and cast an absentee ballot there through Election Day | Register or update your address at the clerk first; most early voting sites do not offer registration |
| Changing plans | You may surrender an absentee ballot at an early voting site to receive a new ballot; other spoil-and-replace rules depend on when and how it was submitted | Once a ballot is inserted into the tabulator, it cannot be changed |
When is my Michigan absentee ballot due?

How to vote absentee in Michigan
- Check your registration and address. If you are registered, request an absentee ballot online, by mail, or from your local clerk. You may also choose to join the permanent absentee ballot list.
- Apply by the deadline. Online and mailed applications are due by 5 p.m. on the Friday before Election Day; an in-person application for a voter registered at their current address is available until 4 p.m. the day before. Applying sooner gives you more time to receive and return the ballot.
- Complete the ballot and sign its return envelope. Sign with a signature that resembles the one on file. The clerk checks the signature; an invalid signature can lead to rejection and notice to you.
- Return the ballot in time. Use mail, a secure drop box, or delivery to your local clerk. For most voters, the clerk must receive it by 8 p.m. Election Day. Military and overseas voters follow the separate postmark and receipt rule above.
- If switching to early in-person voting, bring the absentee ballot to surrender. The site can issue a replacement ballot. Alternatively, you may take a completed absentee ballot to the site, where election inspectors verify it before tabulation.
Can I vote early in person in Michigan?
Yes. Early in-person voting is available to eligible voters for statewide and federal elections. Michigan’s minimum period is at least nine consecutive days, beginning on the second Saturday before Election Day and ending on the Sunday before Election Day. Communities may offer additional days. For the November 3, 2026 general election, the Secretary of State’s toolkit lists early voting through Sunday, November 1. The exact schedule is local; some communities may offer Monday voting, but it is not available everywhere.
How to vote at an early voting site
- Check your registration and address. If you need to register or update your address within 14 days of the election, go to your local clerk with proof of residency. Early voting sites generally do not register voters unless the location is a clerk’s or satellite office.
- Find your assigned site and hours. Use Michigan.gov/Vote or contact your local clerk. Sites may serve multiple precincts, cities, or townships, but you may use only your assigned site or sites.
- Vote while the site is operating. Complete your ballot there and insert it into the tabulator. State guidance recommends bringing acceptable photo ID. If you do not have ID, you can still vote after signing an affidavit.
- Handle any absentee ballot correctly. If you have not voted it, surrender it at the site to receive a new ballot, or bring the completed ballot for verification and tabulation. Do not cast a second vote.
Where is my early voting site?
Early voting locations and hours depend on the election and community, and a voter must use an assigned site. Look up your specific location, dates, and hours at Michigan.gov/Vote or ask your local clerk rather than assuming a nearby site will accept your ballot.
Can I register and vote on Election Day in Michigan?
Eligible voters can register or update their address through Election Day by going in person to their local clerk with proof of residency. At the clerk’s office, they can request, complete, and submit an absentee ballot through 8 p.m. if they are in line by then. Most early voting sites do not provide this registration service. See the Secretary of State’s voter registration guidance for details.

Yes. A completed absentee ballot can be taken to an early voting site, where election inspectors verify it before it is inserted into a tabulator. You can also surrender an unvoted absentee ballot there and receive a replacement ballot if you decide to vote in person. Detroit voters cannot tabulate absentee ballots at Detroit polling places on Election Day; the state guidance directs them to use a drop box or return the ballot to the local clerk.
