For an in vitro diagnostic (IVD) placed on the Great Britain market, registration is a required regulatory step, but it does not show that the device has passed its applicable conformity assessment or that the MHRA has endorsed it. The correct route also depends on whether the destination is Great Britain or Northern Ireland, and on the device’s category and conformity requirements.
What MHRA registration does—and does not—mean
For Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland), the relevant manufacturer or responsible person must register medical devices, including IVDs, with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) before placing them on the market. The registration process gives the regulator information about devices and relevant economic operators; it is not a product quality certificate.
The MHRA states that registration “does not represent any form of accreditation, certification, approval or endorsement.” Therefore, a supplier’s statement that an IVD is “MHRA registered” is not, by itself, evidence that the device has completed the conformity route required for its market.
Registration and conformity assessment answer different questions:

- Registration: Has the required device and responsible-party information been submitted to the relevant regulator?
- Conformity assessment: Has the manufacturer demonstrated that the device meets the legal requirements applicable to its category and intended market?
Do not treat “MHRA approved” as a synonym for “MHRA registered.” The general guidance does not establish a universal MHRA approval stamp for IVDs.
First identify the destination market
“UK” does not mean one uniform medical-device regime. Great Britain and Northern Ireland have different rules and marking frameworks. The MHRA overview, updated 20 February 2026, describes the Great Britain route; its Northern Ireland guidance, updated 11 June 2026, sets out a separate EU-aligned regime.

| Market | Regulatory framework and registration | Relevant marking framework |
|---|---|---|
| Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) | UK MDR 2002 applies. Medical devices, including IVDs, must be registered with the MHRA before placement on the market. | UKCA is available for devices that meet the applicable requirements. Certain CE-marked devices may also be accepted under time-limited, conditional transition arrangements. |
| Northern Ireland | EU MDR/IVDR rules apply, with registration requirements depending on factors including manufacturer location, authorised-representative location and device class. | UKCA is not recognised. CE marking is required; CE UKNI is relevant when a UK notified body carries out mandatory third-party conformity assessment. |
For Northern Ireland, MHRA guidance identifies EUDAMED modules that become mandatory from 28 May 2026. Because NI registration details depend on the device and economic operators involved, check the current NI guidance for the specific case rather than applying the Great Britain process by default.
How conformity assessment and marking fit together
In Great Britain, the UK MDR 2002 covers IVDs in Part IV. The manufacturer must demonstrate conformity through the route applicable to the device. The device’s intended purpose and regulatory category matter: some IVDs, including specified listed categories and self-test devices, require assessment by a UK approved body, but that does not mean every IVD needs one.

UKCA and CE are not interchangeable labels that establish compliance everywhere in the UK. The mark and supporting conformity route must be appropriate to the destination market. In Northern Ireland, the EU-aligned rules apply, UKCA is not recognised, and CE UKNI has a specific role where a UK notified body performs mandatory third-party assessment.
For a non-UK manufacturer placing devices on the Great Britain market, the MHRA overview says to appoint a single UK Responsible Person for the manufacturer’s devices. The responsible person carries out specified tasks, including registration. This Great Britain role should not be assumed to settle Northern Ireland requirements.

When a CE-marked IVD may use a Great Britain transition route
The MHRA overview describes conditional, time-limited acceptance of certain CE-marked devices in Great Britain. Its dates are not blanket permissions: eligibility depends on the device category, the applicable EU legislation and certificate status.
| Device basis described by MHRA | Great Britain end date described | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| EU IVDR-compliant IVD | 30 June 2030 | Applies under the described transition arrangements and remains conditional on eligibility. |
| EU IVDD-compliant IVD | The earlier of the relevant certificate’s expiry or 30 June 2030 | Check the specific certificate and all applicable transition conditions. |
The MHRA overview also describes transition arrangements for EU MDR-compliant medical devices through 30 June 2030. That general medical-device date should not be mistaken for a separate IVD category or used to bypass the IVD-specific conditions. Confirm the current MHRA guidance and device documentation before relying on any transition date.

What to ask when checking a supplier’s claim
If a supplier describes an IVD as “MHRA registered” or “MHRA approved,” request evidence that identifies the actual market route. A useful diligence checklist is:
- Is the intended destination Great Britain, Northern Ireland, or both?
- What is the device’s intended purpose and applicable IVD category or class?
- Which conformity-assessment route applies, and does it require third-party assessment?
- Which marking is relied on for the destination market, and what certificate or conformity documentation supports it?
- If the manufacturer is outside the UK and the destination is Great Britain, who is its UK Responsible Person?
- If the supplier relies on a CE transition route, which EU legislation and certificate status support eligibility, and what end date applies?
A registration record addresses registration; it does not answer all of these conformity and market-access questions. A device-specific regulatory determination requires the intended purpose, category, manufacturer location, conformity route and destination market.
