Metro 2033 Redux rebuilds the original using the later Last Light engine and gameplay framework, adding features such as Survival and Spartan play styles, mask-wiping mechanics, smarter AI, and refreshed visuals. Last Light Redux also adds documented features and includes previously released DLC, but its changes are a more limited set of additions rather than the same foundational rebuild. If you are asking “What changed between Metro 2033 and Metro 2033 Redux?” or “Is Metro Last Light Redux different from the original?”, the short answer is: substantially for the first game, and in specific documented ways for the second.
What Metro Redux includes
Metro Redux is a collection of Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux. The collection was announced in 2014 as a remastered double pack. Its two games share improved gameplay, AI, gunplay, and graphics, but that does not mean both received an identical overhaul: the original Metro 2033 was rebuilt on the later game’s technical and gameplay foundation, while Last Light Redux received its own documented additions.

Metro 2033 vs. Metro 2033 Redux
This is the more substantial before-and-after comparison. Deep Silver’s Xbox description says Metro 2033 Redux was rebuilt in the Last Light engine and gameplay framework. A contemporaneous 2014 preview also described the first game as receiving the bulk of Redux’s upgrades.
- Updated foundation: the original campaign was brought into the later engine and gameplay framework rather than merely receiving a higher-resolution presentation.
- Gameplay features: Redux adds features associated with Last Light, including mask-wiping mechanics and animation. The 2014 preview also cites smarter, deadlier AI.
- Two play styles: Survival emphasizes slower survival-horror pacing; Spartan shifts toward more action-oriented combat.
- Ranger Mode: this optional challenge removes HUD/interface elements, makes combat deadlier, and limits resources, according to PLAION’s description of Redux features.
- Presentation: the release refreshes visuals, alongside the engine and gameplay changes.
Those documented changes are a sound basis for comparing editions. They do not establish a comprehensive list of every level, atmosphere, or balance difference players may notice.
#1 Best Overall
- Immerse yourself in the Moscow Metro - witness One of the most atmospheric worlds in gaming brought to life on Nintendo Switch
- Brave the horrors of the Russian Apocalypse - equip your gasmask and an arsenal of hand-made weaponry as you face the threat of deadly mutants, human foes, and the terrifying environment itself
- Two campaigns, and all DLC included - Metro Redux includes two complete campaigns that combine to create One epic solo adventure, plus a further 10 hours of bonus content
- Two unique play styles: 'spartan' And 'survival' - approach the campaign as a slow burn survival horror, or tackle it with the combat skills of a spartan ranger in these two unique modes
Metro: Last Light vs. Last Light Redux
Last Light Redux is not simply the untouched original bundled with Metro 2033 Redux. PLAION’s official game description identifies several additions and conveniences:
- New melee animations and new full-body player animations.
- The ability to check the watch and ammunition supplies while playing.
- Survival and Spartan play styles, letting players choose slower survival-horror pacing or a more action-oriented approach.
- Ranger Mode, with no HUD/UI, deadlier combat, and fewer resources.
- Previously released DLC, which PLAION describes as 10 hours of bonus single-player content.
The available feature descriptions support these specific differences, but not a complete, platform-by-platform change log. It is more accurate to call Last Light Redux an edition with documented gameplay, animation, interface, and content additions than to claim the sequel was either unchanged or wholly redesigned.
How the editions compare
| Edition | Main documented changes | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Metro 2033 original | Original release from 2010, according to Deep Silver’s GOG preservation announcement. | The original PC version is available through GOG as part of that preservation release; this does not establish current availability on every console or in every region. |
| Metro 2033 Redux | Rebuilt with the Last Light engine and gameplay framework; refreshed visuals, gameplay features, Survival and Spartan styles, and Ranger Mode. | This is the more extensively reworked of the two games in the Redux collection. |
| Metro: Last Light original | Original release from 2013; Deep Silver identifies the GOG version as the Complete Edition. | Original PC editions provide a comparison route where available; availability is not universal across platforms or regions. |
| Metro: Last Light Redux | New melee and full-body animations, in-game watch and ammunition checks, both play styles, Ranger Mode, and previously released DLC. | PLAION describes the included DLC as 10 hours of bonus single-player content; that is the publisher’s description, not a measured playtime guarantee. |
Modes: Survival, Spartan, and Ranger
Survival
Choose Survival for the slower, resource-conscious survival-horror emphasis. It is the better fit if you want the campaign’s tension and scarcity to take priority over frequent action.
Rank #2
- Immerse yourself in the Moscow Metro - witness one of the most atmospheric worlds in gaming brought to life with stunning next-gen visuals at 60FPS
- Brave the horrors of the Russian apocalypse - equip your gasmask and an arsenal of hand-made weaponry as you face the threat of deadly mutants, human foes, and the terrifying environment itself
- Rebuilt and Remastered for next gen - with all previous DLC content included, new modes and features, and many gameplay improvements, this is the definitive version of the critically acclaimed series that fans and newcomers alike will enjoy
- Two campaigns, and all DLC included - Metro Redux includes two complete campaigns that combine to create one epic adventure. With 10 hours of bonus content, that means 30+ hours of solo FPS gameplay just on one play-through
- Two unique Play Styles : 'Spartan' and 'Survival' - approach the campaign as a slow burn Survival Horror , or tackle it with the combat skills of a Spartan Ranger in these two unique modes
Spartan
Choose Spartan for a more action-oriented combat approach. The mode changes the feel and pacing rather than turning the game into a separate campaign.
Ranger
Ranger Mode raises the challenge by removing the HUD/interface, limiting resources, and making combat deadlier. It is distinct from the Survival-versus-Spartan choice: consider it a harder, lower-interface option.

Platform claims need their original context. In its May 22, 2014 PlayStation announcement, 4A Games described the PS4 version as running at 1080p and 60 frames per second, and noted that Metro 2033 was coming to a PlayStation platform for the first time. Those are historical PS4 launch specifications, not a promise that every current version or platform has the same resolution and frame rate.
Rank #3
The Xbox Store currently lists Metro 2033 Redux for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S and lists a Metro Redux bundle containing both Redux games. Storefront availability, prices, and formats can vary by region and change over time, so check the listing for the platform and territory you intend to use.
For PC players seeking the original releases, Deep Silver says the 2010 Metro 2033 and 2013 Metro: Last Light Complete Edition are available through GOG as part of a preservation release. The publisher says this work includes support for Windows 10 and 11, modern controllers, additional resolutions, a high-resolution framerate limiter, vertical synchronization, and default settings. This is evidence for an original-PC comparison route, not for current original-console availability.

Should you play the original or Redux?
- Choose Redux if you want the rebuilt version of Metro 2033, the documented mode options, and a collection that pairs both updated games.
- Choose the original PC releases if you specifically want to experience or compare the earlier versions. Deep Silver’s GOG announcement establishes that route for PC, subject to regional and current availability.
- For Last Light, decide based on the Redux additions and included DLC. Its Redux edition documents new animations, in-game checks, play styles, Ranger Mode, and the earlier DLC; the available descriptions do not provide a complete cross-platform change log.
- Before purchasing, verify the exact platform, region, format, and contents. A historical boxed-pack announcement and a current Xbox listing do not prove that a particular edition is in stock or sold in every territory.
