For most exposed-fastener metal panels, use the roofing screws and sealing washers specified by the panel manufacturer—not nails. Standing-seam roofs are different: panels are usually held by concealed clips, and the clip instructions may allow screws, nails, or another fastener. Identify the roof system first, then follow its installation manual and project requirements.
Start by identifying the roof system
The choice is not simply between two fasteners. It depends on how the panels attach to the roof.
- Exposed-fastener panels: Fasteners pass through the panel face into the deck or support, leaving their heads visible. These systems commonly use roofing screws with sealing washers.
- Standing-seam panels: The attachment is concealed beneath the raised seams. Panels are commonly retained by clips, so the relevant choice may be how to fasten the clip—not whether to drive a nail through the finished panel.
SFS describes the distinction between direct panel attachment and concealed clip attachment in its overview of exposed and concealed roofing fasteners.
Exposed-fastener panels: use the specified roofing screw
For an exposed-fastener panel, the screw, washer, panel, and substrate need to be an approved combination. The panel maker’s instructions determine the fastener type and pattern; “metal roofing” alone does not establish a universal screw length, diameter, coating, or placement.

A bonded sealing washer is part of the weather-facing installation. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center says the washer “should seal the metal surface but should not be pressed.” In practical terms, avoid tightening until the washer is crushed; follow the product instructions for proper seating. See its metal roof guidance.
If you are buying fasteners, look for the category specified in the panel instructions, such as roofing screws with bonded EPDM sealing washers, and verify compatibility with the panel metal, substrate, and exposure. Do not substitute a generic screw or nail based only on appearance.

Standing-seam panels: distinguish the clip fastener from the panel attachment
Standing-seam panels are generally retained by clips or another system-specific concealed attachment. A clip may be fastened to the substrate with a screw, nail, or another approved fastener; that does not make a through-panel nail a suitable substitute for the clip system.
For example, PREFA says stainless-steel clips in its cited standing-seam system may be fastened with nails, screws, or rivets. That allowance applies to its specified clip system, not to every standing-seam roof. Check the exact panel and clip instructions for the permitted fastener and clip spacing: PREFA panel fastening guidance.

- Thread Diameter: #10; Length: 3/4"; Head Height: 0.19" (4.9mm); Flange Diameter: 0.41" (10.5mm); Washer Size: 0.54" (13.8mm); Package: 50 PCS Metal Roofing Screws with a Hex Bit Socket.
- Material: Both the screw and the metal washer are made of carbon steel with zinc-plated surface, which is corrosion-resistant and anti-rust, not easy to damage. The black washer is made of EPDM, which is wear and oxidation resistant.
- Feature: The EPDM rubber washer can prevent leaks, loosening and damage the contact surface, which is bonded to the metal washer forming a tight sealing when you tighten the self-drilling screw.
- Easy to Use: The self-drilling screws can be directly screwed into the metal or wood without pre-drilling, not easy to deform and slide when use, high strength, long service life. All you need to install them with a power drive tool.
- Wide Application: The hex head metal roofing screws are typically used in metal-to-metal and metal-to-wood applications, most commonly on thin metals such as iron panel, steel plate, aluminum panel, also used in wood, plastic sheet, composite board, etc.
Where nails are used—and why that does not make them a universal substitute
Nails do have uses in metal-roofing work. The Metal Construction Association’s Metal Roof Installation Manual identifies nails among common fastener types and lists applications that include selected metal-roof installations, underlayment, slip sheets, and wood substrates. The appropriate use depends on the panel and assembly; this is not a blanket approval to replace exposed-panel screws with nails.
The manual covers multiple fastener types and applications rather than establishing one universal screw-versus-nail rule. See Chapter 14, “Fasteners,” of the Metal Roof Installation Manual.

Compare the decision by roof system
| Decision | Exposed-fastener panels | Standing-seam panels |
|---|---|---|
| How the panel attaches | A fastener passes through the panel into the deck or support. | Concealed clips or another system-specific attachment retain the panel. |
| What screws versus nails means | Usually the fastener passing through the panel face. | Often the fastener securing a clip, rather than a fastener through the finished panel. |
| Sealing and exposure | Exposed heads and sealing washers are part of the weather surface; the washer must seal without being crushed. | The attachment is concealed, but clip and fastener details still govern installation. |
| What determines the choice | Panel instructions, substrate, compatible fastener materials, and the required fastening schedule. | System-specific clips, clip spacing, and the fastener permitted by the manufacturer. |
Check compatibility and follow the approved schedule
Fastener corrosion resistance should suit both the panel metal and the roof’s exposure. When dissimilar metals contact each other in the presence of moisture, galvanic corrosion can be a concern. Use the materials and coatings specified for the roof system rather than assuming that any corrosion-resistant fastener is compatible.
Spacing and fastening method depend on the panel system and project design. The available guidance does not establish that screws or nails categorically provide better uplift performance across metal roofs. Use the approved details for the named assembly; do not choose a fastener or pattern by general rule of thumb.

Make the choice in this order
- Identify whether the roof uses exposed-fastener panels or a standing-seam system.
- Read the installation instructions for the exact panel and, for a standing-seam roof, the clip system.
- Confirm the specified fastener type, material or coating, substrate compatibility, and spacing against the project requirements.
- For an exposed-fastener panel, install the specified screw and sealing washer so the washer seals without being pressed or crushed.
- If the instructions or assembly details are unclear, confirm them with the panel manufacturer or a qualified metal-roofing installer before fastening.
