It can record how and where a photo was made, who created it, what it depicts, how it may be used, and technical details such as camera settings. Metadata may be embedded in the image binary or stored in an accompanying XMP sidecar file, especially in raw-camera workflows.
It is useful for search, credit, licensing, accessibility and provenance, but GPS coordinates and other fields can reveal private information. Inspect the fields before sharing, preserve rights information deliberately, and remove only what you do not want to disclose.
What metadata in an image file means
Metadata is data about the image rather than the visible pixels. A JPEG, TIFF, PNG or related file can contain named fields alongside encoded image data. A camera may write capture time, lens and exposure settings; a newsroom system may add a caption, byline, keywords and rights terms; an editor may add a rating or color label.
Storage is format-dependent. Supported JPEG/JFIF and TIFF workflows commonly embed metadata in the file. PNG and other formats have their own supported chunks and conventions, so a field available in one format is not guaranteed to survive conversion to another. Some raw workflows keep edits and descriptive fields in a separate XMP sidecar. The sidecar must travel with the raw file or those edits can appear to be lost.

The three major metadata families
EXIF
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is associated primarily with camera and capture information. Typical fields include make and model, lens, focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, orientation, software, date and time, and sometimes latitude and longitude from a phone or camera GPS receiver. EXIF can also contain a thumbnail and technical color information.
IPTC Core and Extension
IPTC schemas are designed for descriptive, administrative, rights and editorial information. Depending on the profile and application, fields can include creator, credit line, headline, caption or description, keywords, people shown, location names, copyright notice, licensing terms, commissioning details, accessibility text, product or artwork information and usage restrictions. The International Press Telecommunications Council identifies its 2025.1 specification as the current revision in this context.
XMP
XMP is a metadata serialization framework developed by Adobe and now maintained as ISO 16684. As the IPTC User Guide puts it, “It is called XMP, was developed by Adobe and is now an ISO standard.” XMP can be embedded in supported files or saved as a sidecar, and it is commonly used for non-destructive editing, ratings, labels and custom namespaces. XMP can carry IPTC properties; it is not a replacement for the descriptive meaning of IPTC fields.
What an image’s metadata can contain
- Identity and credit: creator name, byline, credit line, source and commissioning information.
- Description and discovery: caption, title, headline, keywords, category and subject codes.
- People and places: names of people shown, geographic location, city, region and country.
- Rights and licensing: copyright notice, rights statement, license URL, usage terms and contact information.
- Accessibility: descriptive text or other fields used to support accessible publishing workflows.
- Technical capture data: camera and lens, exposure, ISO, focal length, orientation, software and timestamps.
- Editing and workflow state: ratings, labels, crop or processing information and application-specific XMP properties.
Not every file contains every field. A phone may write GPS and camera details while a screenshot contains only a few technical tags. An export, messaging service, CMS or CDN may rewrite or remove fields. There is no reliable universal percentage for how many images carry metadata, so treat each file and delivery path as a separate case.

How to view metadata
Windows File Explorer
- Right-click the image and choose Properties.
- Open the Details tab to see common camera and descriptive fields.
- Use Remove Properties and Personal Information to create a copy with selected properties removed. Review the result; this basic dialog does not expose every possible EXIF, IPTC or XMP field.
macOS Finder and Photos
- In Finder, select the file and press Command-I for basic dimensions and file information.
- In Photos, open an image and choose Window > Info (or the Info button) to view available date, camera and location details.
- For complete field-level inspection or batch changes, use a dedicated metadata editor such as ExifTool, Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop.
Adobe and specialist applications
IPTC identifies Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, FotoStation, Photo Mechanic, ACDSee Pro, Extensis Portfolio and ExifTool as major tools. In Lightroom or Photoshop, inspect the Metadata panel before exporting and choose an output metadata policy that matches your rights and privacy requirements. Specialist catalog applications expose more IPTC and XMP fields and support templates for consistent captions, credits and licensing.

ExifTool on the command line
ExifTool is useful for inspection, writing and scripted updates across many files. After installing it from the ExifTool project, inspect one file with:
exiftool photo.jpg
Show only GPS fields:
exiftool -gps:all photo.jpg
Write a caption and creator while preserving the original as a backup:
exiftool -P -Description="Riverside at dawn" -Artist="Alex Morgan" photo.jpg
ExifTool normally creates an original backup when writing. Keep that behavior until you have verified the output and your backup policy.
How to remove GPS and other private metadata before sharing
Make a copy first. Decide what must remain for credit, licensing, accessibility or provenance, then remove privacy-sensitive fields from the copy rather than deleting everything automatically.
Remove GPS with ExifTool
exiftool -P -gps:all= photo.jpg
For a folder of JPEGs, target a separate output directory so the source files remain intact:

exiftool -o cleaned/ -gps:all= originals/*.jpg
Check the result:
exiftool -gps:all cleaned/photo.jpg
No GPS output indicates that ExifTool found no GPS tags in that file. It does not prove that a platform will preserve all other metadata after upload.
Remove broad personal fields
If you need a privacy-oriented copy, remove GPS, device serial information, software history and timestamps selectively rather than using a blanket wipe without review:

Field names and support vary by format. Inspect first, then verify after writing. If the image is evidence, part of a legal record or a professional archive, retain an untouched original and document what was removed.
Phone and sharing-app controls
Many mobile photo pickers offer a location toggle in the share sheet, and some operating systems let you disable location tagging in the camera settings. These controls differ by device and release, so confirm the recipient copy by inspecting it. Messaging and social services may strip or rewrite metadata; do not rely on that behavior as your privacy plan.
How to preserve rights and accessibility information
Before publishing, define a minimum metadata set. A practical publishing profile often keeps creator, credit line, caption, copyright notice, license or rights statement, and accessibility description, while removing precise GPS and private device identifiers. Store the full original and a documented export profile in your digital asset management (DAM) system.

Test the complete path—editor, DAM, CMS, image processor and CDN—with a sample file. IPTC warns that systems which strip embedded metadata can damage copyright information and may be illegal in some countries. Configure stripping or preservation deliberately, and expose important rights information in the page or API as well as inside the file when your legal or accessibility policy requires it.
Embedded metadata versus XMP sidecars
| Situation | Where information may live | Operational rule |
|---|---|---|
| JPEG or TIFF from a camera or editor | Embedded EXIF, IPTC and/or XMP segments | Keep the edited file and verify fields after export. |
| Raw-camera workflow | Raw file plus an .xmp sidecar |
Move, back up and archive the sidecar with its raw image. |
| Converted or optimized delivery image | New file with a subset, rewritten fields or none | Use an explicit export policy and inspect the delivered copy. |
A sidecar is not automatically bad or incomplete; it is a separate record. Losing it can remove ratings, edits and descriptive work even when the raw pixels remain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems and fixes
The metadata panel is empty
The file may not contain those fields, the application may show only a subset, or an earlier export removed them. Inspect the actual file with ExifTool and compare it with the original.
GPS remains after cleaning
There may be GPS-related tags outside the view you checked, an XMP sidecar may still contain location, or you may be opening the untouched original. Run exiftool -gps:all file on the exact copy you will send and inspect any sidecar separately.
Changes disappear after upload
A DAM, CMS, CDN or social platform may rewrite metadata. Compare a downloaded delivery file with your pre-upload copy and adjust that system’s metadata policy. Keep rights and accessibility details in the publishing record as a second line of defense.

Raw edits are missing on another computer
The XMP sidecar was probably not copied, was renamed, or is not in the folder the raw editor scans. Restore the matching sidecar and confirm the application recognizes it before moving the archive.
Writing fails or corrupts a file
Work on a copy, update the metadata tool, confirm that the format is supported and preserve backups. For large batches, process a small test set first and compare hashes, dimensions and representative metadata fields before proceeding.
Metadata workflow checklist
- Keep an untouched original and its matching raw sidecar, if any.
- Inspect EXIF, IPTC and XMP before publishing or sharing.
- Mark the fields required for credit, rights, licensing, accessibility and provenance.
- Remove precise GPS and other private fields from a separate delivery copy when appropriate.
- Export using a documented profile for the target format and platform.
- Download or open the delivered file and verify that required fields survived.
- Record what was removed, by which tool and on which copy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing an image’s pixels remove its metadata?
Not necessarily. Cropping, resizing or re-encoding may preserve, rewrite or discard fields depending on the application and output format. Inspect the exported file rather than assuming.
Can metadata prove who took a photograph?
Metadata can state a creator or camera identity, but those fields can be edited or removed. Treat them as useful provenance evidence, not conclusive proof by themselves.
Should I remove all metadata before publishing?
No. Keep fields needed for credit, rights, licensing, accessibility and provenance; remove sensitive data such as precise GPS when the audience does not need it.
