Meta’s published device-security policy promises security updates for at least five years after a device’s initial retail release. That is a minimum security commitment—not a confirmed final-update date for a particular headset, and not a promise of five years of new features. Meta’s Quest 1 notice illustrates the difference: new features stopped with software version 50, while security patches and bug fixes continued until August 2024.

What does Meta’s five-year update policy actually promise?

Meta’s device-security policy sets a floor: security updates for at least five years after a device’s initial retail release. The period is tied to the retail release, not to the date an individual bought, activated, or first used the headset. Meta also cautions that the policy is not a guarantee of how long the device itself will last.

That commitment is about security support. It does not say that every Quest will receive new features throughout the same period, nor does it announce the final patch date for each model. “At least five years” means Meta’s stated minimum; it is not a countdown that proves support must end as soon as five years have passed.

Meta may provide support beyond that minimum, or make a separate announcement about a particular model. Unless Meta publishes such a model-specific end date, adding five years to a launch date yields only an earliest minimum-policy milestone—not a confirmed end-of-support date.

Are security updates and software feature updates the same?

No. Security patches address security issues, while feature updates add or change functions. A headset can stop receiving new features and still receive security patches and bug fixes for a time.

Support area What it covers What the available Meta notices establish
Security updates Updates intended to address security issues. Meta’s policy promises at least five years after initial retail release. The policy does not supply a final date for each Quest model.
New features New or changed headset capabilities delivered through software. Meta announced that Quest 1 stopped receiving new features starting with Quest software version 50. That was a feature cutoff, not the end of security updates.
Bug fixes Corrections to software problems; they are distinct from adding features. Meta’s Quest 1 notice says security patches and bug fixes continued until August 2024.
App availability and compatibility Whether an app can be accepted, installed, updated, or run on a headset. Meta’s Quest 1 notice treats acceptance of new apps separately from headset feature and security maintenance. App support should be checked with the relevant app developer.
Hardware lifespan How long the device remains usable as physical hardware. Meta says security-support duration is not a guarantee of device lifespan. It also does not guarantee that every app or connected service will continue working.

The distinction matters when interpreting an update notification or a support announcement. “No new features” does not mean “no security patches,” and a security-support period does not tell you whether an app developer will maintain an app for the same length of time.

What happened to Quest 1 support?

Quest 1 is the clearest documented example of separate support timelines. Meta’s lifecycle notice said new features would stop starting with Quest software version 50. It separately said security patches and bug fixes would continue until August 2024.

Those milestones answer different questions. Version 50 marks the start of Quest 1’s no-new-features period; it is not the date security maintenance ended. August 2024 is the month Meta stated that Quest 1 security patches and bug fixes would end. Do not treat either milestone as a general schedule for later Quest models.

Meta also addressed acceptance of new apps separately from the headset’s feature and security maintenance. That separation is important: an app-related change is not itself proof that the headset has stopped receiving security updates, and the end of security maintenance does not establish that every existing app immediately becomes unavailable.

When will Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, or Quest 3S stop getting security updates?

The policy establishes a minimum duration, but the sources cited here do not establish separate announced final security-update dates for Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, or Quest 3S. Do not present a date calculated from a model’s launch as Meta’s confirmed end-of-support date.

  • Model: Confirm the exact Quest model rather than relying on a broad “Meta Quest” label.
  • Initial retail release: Use the verified initial retail-release date for that model as the starting point for the policy’s minimum period. An individual purchase date is not the policy’s stated starting point.
  • Policy milestone: If you calculate five years from that release, label the result an earliest minimum-policy milestone. It is not a confirmed final patch date.
  • Model-specific notice: Check whether Meta has announced a feature cutoff or security-support end date for that exact model. These are separate announcements and may refer to different kinds of support.
  • Essential apps: Check their current compatibility and support with the app developers; headset security policy does not set an app developer’s timeline.

This approach applies to Quest 3 and Quest 3S as much as to older models. Their presence in Meta’s headset range does not, by itself, establish a final security-update date. If a future purchase decision depends on a precise support end date, look for a current Meta announcement naming the model and the type of support it covers rather than extrapolating from the minimum policy.

Will a Quest headset still work after security support ends?

The end of security updates does not, by itself, mean a headset immediately stops functioning. Meta distinguishes the duration of security support from the device’s lifespan. But continued operation is not the same as continued protection, guaranteed app compatibility, or guaranteed access to connected services.

Different parts of the experience can change on different schedules. The headset may remain usable while an app developer changes its compatibility, a service changes its requirements, or a headset-specific feature is no longer updated. The available policy does not promise that every app, online service, or function will keep working after security support ends.

If you rely on a Quest for a particular app or service, check that app’s current support information rather than treating the headset’s security-support window as a compatibility guarantee. Consider the security-support status separately when deciding whether the headset is appropriate for sensitive accounts or activities.

What should you do if you own a Quest with uncertain support dates?

Start with the exact model and the type of support you care about. A general statement about “updates” can obscure whether it refers to security patches, new features, bug fixes, or apps.

  1. Identify the headset model. Use the model name shown in your device information or purchase records. Do not infer a model-specific timeline from the Quest family name alone.
  2. Look for a Meta notice about that model. Check whether it describes security updates, feature updates, bug fixes, or app acceptance. A notice about one category should not be read as a cutoff for all the others.
  3. Use the right date. For the policy minimum, the relevant start point is initial retail release. A five-year calculation gives a minimum-policy milestone, not a confirmed last-patch date.
  4. Check apps individually. For software you depend on, consult its developer’s current compatibility and support information. A headset policy cannot establish the future support decisions of independent app developers.
  5. Make a decision based on the actual need. If you need a confirmed end date, rely on a current model-specific Meta notice. If you need a particular app, verify its support separately. Replacing a headset is a choice based on those needs, not an automatic requirement triggered simply by a security-support announcement.

What is the practical takeaway for Quest owners?

Use Meta’s five-year figure as a minimum security-support commitment measured from initial retail release, not as a precise expiration date or a feature-update guarantee. Quest 1 demonstrates that feature support and security maintenance can end at different times. For any other model, distinguish the policy milestone from a specific Meta announcement, and check essential apps on their own support timelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Meta’s five-year policy start when I buy my headset?

No. The published duration is measured from the device’s initial retail release, not an individual owner’s purchase or activation date. For a specific model, use a verified release date rather than the date on your receipt.

Does the end of security updates automatically delete my games or saved data?

Meta’s security-support policy and Quest 1 lifecycle notice do not establish that support ending automatically deletes games or saved data. Check Meta’s current guidance for account, backup, and data-retention questions before taking action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an app stop working while my headset is still getting security updates?

Yes. App acceptance and compatibility are separate from headset security maintenance, and an app developer can set its own support timeline. Check the developer’s current information for the apps you depend on.

Is there a single Quest update end date for every country?

The policy described here uses each device’s initial retail release, but the cited material does not provide region-by-region release dates or a universal final patch date. For a date-sensitive decision, consult Meta’s current notice for the exact model and market.
