Meta Quest 3S is Meta’s lower-cost standalone mixed-reality headset, launched on October 15, 2024 in 128GB and 256GB versions. It uses the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform as Quest 3, supports color passthrough and the Quest software library, but lowers cost with less display resolution, a narrower field of view, preset IPD positions and no listed depth sensor.
Meta announced a US starting price of $299.99 in 2024, but that is historical. TechCrunch reported US prices of $349.99 for 128GB and $449.99 for 256GB from April 19, 2026; verify the current retailer or Meta listing for your country before buying.
What the Quest 3S is
Meta positions Quest 3S as an all-in-one headset for people new to mixed reality and for Quest or Quest 2 owners seeking a lower-cost upgrade. It runs without a gaming PC, while Quest Link and Air Link can connect it to a compatible computer. Meta highlights games, fitness, multitasking, mixed-reality apps and watching films or shows on a large virtual screen. Those are Meta’s intended-use descriptions, not independent performance tests.
The headset has color stereoscopic passthrough, so virtual content can be viewed alongside your physical surroundings. Qualcomm identifies the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform as the processor and says Quest 3S supports Meta’s complete games and applications library: Qualcomm’s Quest 3S overview.

The Quest 3’s higher resolution and wider field of view can matter for text, fine details and how much of a virtual scene is visible. Its continuous IPD adjustment also gives more precise lens alignment than the Quest 3S presets. Meta’s table does not provide an independent comfort, sharpness or battery-life test, so those practical differences should not be treated as measured user outcomes.
Storage: choosing 128GB or 256GB
128GB
The 128GB model is the lower-capacity option and suits buyers who mainly use a small rotation of games and applications, uninstalling titles when space becomes tight.

Using Xbox controllers and cloud gaming
Xbox says an Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 or Xbox Adaptive Controller can pair with Quest over Bluetooth. The Xbox app provides a route to Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) on Quest, but supported games, app availability and the required Game Pass membership can change. Check the current Xbox app and catalog before relying on this use case.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider Quest 3S?
- First-time VR buyers: You get a standalone headset, color passthrough and access to the Quest ecosystem without buying a separate PC.
- Quest or Quest 2 owners on a budget: The XR2 Gen 2 platform and Quest 3-generation software support make it a lower-cost path to newer experiences, subject to the optical compromises.
- Buyers sensitive to visual alignment: Consider Quest 3 instead if you need continuous IPD adjustment, a wider field of view or higher per-eye resolution.
- Large-library users: The 256GB version reduces the need to uninstall software, while the 128GB version minimizes upfront cost.
What to check before ordering
- Confirm the live price, storage capacity, taxes and delivery region on the seller’s listing; the 2024 launch price is obsolete as current evidence.
- Decide whether three IPD presets and the Quest 3S display specifications suit your eyes and intended use, or whether Quest 3’s continuous adjustment and higher resolution justify its price.
- Check the included accessories. An Elite Strap, Xbox controller and subscriptions belong to the separately announced Xbox Edition bundle, not standard Quest 3S packaging.
- If you plan to use Xbox Cloud Gaming, verify the current Quest Xbox app, Game Pass requirement and supported-game catalog.
- Allow for the approximately 2.5-hour battery estimate published by Meta and plan charging or an approved accessory for longer sessions.
The Bottom Line
Quest 3S is the budget entry point to Meta’s current standalone mixed-reality platform: it retains Quest 3’s XR2 Gen 2 foundation and library access, while trading away display resolution, field of view, depth sensing and continuous IPD adjustment. Choose it for the lower entry cost; choose Quest 3 if those optical and sensing differences are central to your use.
