Meta Muse, ChatGPT Shopping, and Amazon Rufus handle different parts of buying online. Muse is designed to browse websites and carry out browser tasks after you approve sensitive actions; ChatGPT helps you discover products and offers in-app checkout for some eligible purchases; Rufus is built into Amazon’s store and uses Amazon shopping activity to personalize suggestions. None guarantees access to every retailer or a universal checkout, and the available product descriptions are not comparable independent privacy or performance audits.
How do Meta Muse, ChatGPT Shopping, and Rufus differ?

The practical choice is about workflow, not a single winner: whether you want an assistant to browse beyond one store, to help shortlist products, or to make recommendations inside a retailer you already use.
Can Meta Muse buy things for me?
Meta describes Muse as a personal agent available through its Muse app and WhatsApp. It can browse websites, compare prices across retailers, fill in forms, and keep working after the app is closed. Meta says it pauses for human approval before sensitive actions, including purchases. That means Muse is meant to advance a transaction, not silently make a purchase on your behalf. Meta’s September 2026 announcement describes the product and its payment approach.
For supported checkout, Meta says Muse can use Stripe Link with a single-use card number so the merchant or agent does not see the customer’s real card details. That does not make every merchant compatible: a retailer must be reachable by the browser agent and its checkout must support the payment flow. Meta described Shop Pay as “coming soon” in its September announcement, so it should not be treated as an available Muse payment option on that evidence.

Can Muse shop on Amazon?
Not according to a dated report: Axios reported on September 21, 2026, that Amazon had blocked Muse from browsing and buying on Amazon.com. This is a report about access at that time, not a guarantee about later policy. It illustrates an important limit of browser-based shopping: an assistant’s ability to work across websites depends on each retailer permitting access.
What does ChatGPT Shopping offer, and when can you check out?
OpenAI says ChatGPT can present product options with images, details, and purchase links. It also offers virtual try-on for clothing and accessories and lets users save products in a Library. OpenAI says shopping results are selected independently and are not ads or influenced by partnerships. These discovery features do not mean every listing can be purchased inside ChatGPT.

Instant Checkout is limited to some eligible merchants and products, according to OpenAI’s shopping help page. For other listings, the purchase link takes you to the merchant. OpenAI also cautions that a try-on image may not accurately show a product or its fit; check the merchant’s measurements, item details, and return policy before ordering. The documentation lists shopping availability on mobile and web.
How does Rufus use Amazon shopping data?
Amazon says Rufus draws on a customer’s shopping activity and the conversation’s context to personalize answers and product suggestions. It can add items to an Amazon cart for the customer to review and help reorder previously purchased or browsed items. Its close integration with Amazon’s own store is useful for shopping within that catalog, but it is not the same cross-site browsing workflow Meta describes for Muse.

Amazon reported that more than 250 million customers had used Rufus “this year” in a 2025 announcement. That is Amazon’s figure for 2025, not a current 2026 usage total; see Amazon’s Rufus announcement.
What do the privacy and safety claims establish?
The providers describe different data practices, but their public product explanations do not amount to a like-for-like independent security audit. It would be misleading to rank these assistants as objectively more private or secure on this evidence alone. Consider what information each service uses for the particular task you plan to delegate, and check the provider’s current controls and terms.

Meta Muse
Meta says Muse runs in a dedicated cloud virtual machine and that a separate Sentinel layer checks outbound actions. Users choose connected apps and levels of access, can disconnect a service, and can opt out of interactions being used for model training. Meta also says conversations and VM data are not shared with its advertising systems. These are Meta’s descriptions, not independently verified findings. Meta’s technical explanation says the browser agent sees an accessibility-tree snapshot rather than raw page DOM, cannot run JavaScript in page context, and pauses while the user takes over the browser. Meta says purchases require human approval and an audit trail is available.
Meta’s planned Confidential VM is a future capability being tested, not a generally launched feature. Meta says it is intended to cryptographically prevent the company from accessing the VM; that protection should not be attributed to the currently described VM.

ChatGPT Shopping
OpenAI says product results are selected independently rather than being ads or influenced by partnerships. Its shopping documentation also warns about the limits of virtual try-on accuracy. Those statements do not establish a privacy comparison with Muse or Rufus, nor do they independently verify how either service handles data.
Amazon Rufus
Amazon’s description says Rufus uses individual shopping activity and conversational context to personalize its responses. That is a useful disclosure of the inputs Amazon says it uses, but it is still the provider’s account rather than an independent assessment.

Before letting any assistant move from recommendations toward an order, check the specific merchant, the information shown for approval, and the protections that apply after payment. The boundary differs by workflow: Muse may act in a browser after approval, ChatGPT checkout applies only to eligible listings, and Rufus can stage an item in Amazon’s cart for review.
- Confirm the merchant and item. Verify the product variant, quantity, price, delivery address, shipping charge, and any recurring-payment terms on the review screen or merchant page.
- Check who is taking payment. Determine whether checkout is inside the assistant, through a payment service, or on the retailer’s own page. Do not assume a payment feature works on every listing.
- Review returns and purchase protections. Meta says eligible Link purchases have protections for certain problems, including lost or damaged items and price drops. Coverage depends on the applicable terms; review the current Link terms before relying on a particular protection.
- Use approval as a real checkpoint. Read the final action details instead of treating the assistant’s confirmation prompt as a formality.
For US availability, the Associated Press reported that Muse’s September 2026 launch was for adults 18 and older in the United States. That is launch-period scope, not a promise of permanent availability or a statement that the service is available in other regions. The AP’s launch report provides that context.
Which assistant should you use?
- Choose Muse if you want a general agent to research across websites and progress browser tasks, and you are willing to review and approve sensitive actions. Its actual reach depends on retailer access and supported checkout.
- Choose ChatGPT Shopping if you want product discovery, saved options, or a virtual try-on, with the possibility of in-app checkout on eligible listings.
- Choose Rufus if you are shopping within Amazon and want suggestions informed by your Amazon shopping activity, or help adding products to a cart for review.
There is no evidence here for an objective accuracy, privacy, security, or effectiveness winner. The most useful comparison is the one that matches the store you need, the amount of action you want delegated, and the approval and payment path you are comfortable reviewing.
