For TYLOO captain Jingxiang “Mercury” Wang, practice should prepare players to make decisions on their own—not merely repeat calls written on a tactics sheet. In an October 2, 2026 interview with HLTV, he describes a practice approach built around default play and unexpected in-game situations, alongside the greater preparation and mental pressure he says come with leading a team.
What does Mercury think practice should accomplish?
Mercury says practice should help players develop game sense by giving them situations to read and solve themselves. Rather than making every response depend on a preset instruction, he wants players to encounter sudden situations and make their own judgment calls.
“The purpose of practice should lean more towards default play, and let the players encounter those sudden situations themselves, so they can make their own judgment calls, not just be limited to what’s written on the tactics sheet.”

How does that differ from tactics-sheet practice?
The distinction is not between having tactics and having no tactics. Mercury says the team still prepares a match plan; his point is that practice should also let players act when a round does not follow that plan exactly.

Why does leadership add pressure?
HLTV reported that Mercury had captained TYLOO since summer 2024. He describes the in-game leader role as bringing more pressure and requiring more preparation, including adjusting the team’s style to the opponent rather than relying on one predictable approach.

That concern connects opponent preparation with his view of practice: a team must be ready both to execute its intended approach and to make decisions when circumstances shift. Mercury also says the coach contributes tactical suggestions to match preparation. He explains that he outlines how the team will play, considers the coach’s input, and uses it while preparing for the match.

“But sometimes when we lose some really crucial matches, I do doubt myself a bit, but it’s mainly up to me to adjust my mental state.”
His comment points to a personal burden of in-game leadership: reviewing the team’s approach and preparing for the next opponent take place alongside the need to regain composure after a high-stakes loss. It is his account of the role, not a general claim that all leaders respond in the same way.

What was TYLOO’s ranking and Major-invite context?
The October 2, 2026 HLTV article said TYLOO had overtaken The MongolZ that month to become Asia’s top-ranked team. Mercury discussed the position as contested ahead of two major events before the ranking cutoff.
