The Melee 3D mod changes how you move and choose attack directions; it is not simply standard Super Smash Bros. Melee displayed in stereoscopic 3D. The walz0/Melee-3D project describes arena movement toward and away from the camera, plus new controls for up/down attacks and some recovery steering. Standard Melee retains its familiar side-on movement and attack inputs. The mod also has a specific installation requirement: an unmodified NTSC 1.02 game image. Its documentation does not establish that it runs directly on an original GameCube or Wii.
That means an experienced Melee player can bring character knowledge and a familiar controller, but should expect to relearn positioning and some inputs. The comparison below separates this arena mod from a different project, a stereoscopic handheld port that aims to preserve the original mechanics.

The table compares two different play situations, not two interchangeable editions with identical setup. Standard Melee can mean an unmodified retail game played locally on GameCube or Wii, or a PC-emulator setup. Slippi is part of the PC conversation, particularly for online play; it does not turn the arena mod’s patch requirements into a general Melee requirement. For walz0/Melee-3D, the README gives the patch prerequisite and control changes, while leaving some hardware and compatibility questions unresolved.

A player should not infer a high-end GPU requirement, a guaranteed frame rate, or a hardware cost from the fact that the mod uses a new movement plane. Actual setup costs depend on what game, computer, controller and adapter the player already has; no particular purchase is established as mandatory for the mod.

Is Melee 3D just a graphics mod?
No. Walz0’s Melee-3D is a gameplay mod: its README describes movement in the direction of the control stick and directional-input rules that differ from standard Melee. It is not merely the original game with a stereoscopic display effect.
That distinction matters because players must adjust how they move, attack and recover—not just how they view the action. In standard Melee, the familiar arena is side-on. In the mod, movement can include a direction toward or away from the camera. It is reasonable to infer that this changes spacing and positioning decisions, but the available documentation does not provide measured outcomes or a competitive analysis of those changes.
There is also a separate project, 2gifts/melee-3ds, which is a stereoscopic handheld port aimed at preserving the original mechanics. It targets homebrewed New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL hardware, with a separate, limited 1v1 Slippi Direct beta described for that project. Those details do not establish the hardware requirements or features of walz0’s arena mod. “Melee 3D” can therefore refer to different projects; this article uses it to mean the walz0 arena mod.
Keep the distinction in mind when searching for videos, downloads or setup advice. A 3DS port’s hardware, stereoscopic display, performance observations or online beta are not evidence about the arena mod. Conversely, the arena mod’s altered movement does not describe the 3DS port, whose stated aim is to preserve original mechanics.
What changes in movement, attacks and recovery?
The main change is that movement can take place in a direction toward or away from the camera as well as across the familiar side-on plane. The mod also changes how players select some attack directions and steer some recoveries.
Movement and spacing
In standard Melee, players position themselves along the conventional side-on arena. The arena mod documents movement in the direction of the control stick, which adds depth to movement. That creates a new positioning axis to consider: a player may need to move across the arena and also choose whether to move toward or away from the camera.
The likely practical consequence is that players will need to reconsider spacing and alignment rather than relying only on familiar left-right positioning. That is an inference from the documented movement rule, not a measured claim about match outcomes, balance or difficulty. The developer documentation does not quantify how much the added movement changes any particular matchup.
Recommended Free Tools
For a returning player, familiar character knowledge may still help with recognizing a move or anticipating an opponent, but it does not answer the new spatial question: is the opponent aligned in the added direction as well as at the expected side-on distance? Treat that as a practice problem, not a claim that standard spacing knowledge becomes useless. The README documents the added movement direction; it does not provide a new set of matchup rules or quantify how often players will need to adjust.
Attack direction and the Throttle
The mod’s author summarizes the directional change this way: “All attacks are ‘forward’ inputs by default, use the Throttle to input up or down!” The Throttle is initially bound to R. At character select, the README says it can be changed using L or R. Using it supplies up/down inputs, which affects how players select attacks that need those directions.
In practical terms, do not assume that a standard Melee directional input will always produce the same attack choice in the mod. Learn what the Throttle does in the mod’s control scheme and check its binding before a match. The documentation describes the default and the option to change it, but does not say that every character or move behaves identically.

This makes an early control check worthwhile even if you are using a controller you already know. Verify which button is assigned to Throttle at character select, then practice the intended forward and up/down inputs in a low-stakes setting. This is a practical way to avoid confusing an unfamiliar input rule with a controller fault. It is not necessary to buy a different controller merely because the mod introduces the Throttle.
Recovery steering
The developer also documents C-stick steering for some recoveries and moves, including Ness’s specials. Throttle use affects up-special aiming. Together, those changes mean recovery inputs can require more than repeating familiar standard Melee timing or directions: players need to understand which directional control applies to the move they are using.
Do not generalize that description to every character. The README’s examples establish that some recoveries and moves have steering behavior, not that every recovery works the same way. When learning a character, treat the relevant move’s behavior as something to verify in the mod rather than assuming that a control rule observed for Ness applies universally.
It is useful to separate the controls in your own practice: first identify the Throttle’s effect on up-special aiming, then test whether the move you care about uses C-stick steering. The documentation does not prescribe one universal recovery input sequence, so a single example should not be treated as a complete character-by-character guide.
Which stages are documented for the arena mod?
The walz0 project README lists nine 3D stages. That is the number in the published list, not a claim about how many players use the mod or how well each stage performs.
- Final Destination
- Pokemon Stadium
- Yoshi’s Story
- Fountain of Dreams
- Dreamland N64
- Green Greens
- Yoshis Island
- Mute City
- Onett
The list provides a useful sense of the mod’s documented arena selection, but it is not evidence that all stages have identical layouts or play characteristics to their standard Melee counterparts. The README does not give a comparative stage analysis, nor does the list establish tournament acceptance or a standard competitive ruleset.
Use the list as a checklist of what the README names, rather than assuming it is a tournament-legal rotation or a complete catalog of every possible configuration. It is a documented count, not an independently measured adoption figure. Players interested in a particular stage should verify that it is present in their installed build instead of relying on assumptions based only on the stage’s familiar name.
Can I play the Melee 3D mod on GameCube or Wii?
The developer documentation reviewed here does not establish direct play on an original GameCube or Wii. That is an unresolved compatibility point—not proof that original-console play is impossible.
For standard Melee, Melee.tv describes local play on GameCube or Wii as well as a PC emulation route. The arena mod has a different documented setup: apply its patch to the required game image. Do not assume that because standard Melee runs on original Nintendo hardware, the patched mod does too.

The separate stereoscopic 3DS project has its own hardware target: homebrewed New Nintendo 3DS or New Nintendo 3DS XL systems. That is not evidence that walz0’s arena mod requires a New 3DS, glasses, or a special controller. No such requirement is established for the arena mod by its README.

If your goal is to play unmodified Melee on a console, the local GameCube/Wii route is distinct from installing this patch. If your goal is specifically the arena mod, check the project’s current compatibility notes rather than buying original hardware on the assumption that a standard-game setup will carry over. The reviewed README does not verify direct console support, so buying a GameCube or Wii specifically to run the mod is not a supported recommendation.
What do I need to install the patch?
The mod README requires a legally obtained, unmodified NTSC 1.02 ISO with MD5 checksum 0e63d4223b01d9aba596259dc155a174. The patch’s exact revision and checksum requirement are central: a different regional or modified game image can fail the patching step.
The README gives different patching routes by operating system:
- Windows: use the README’s drag-and-drop patching method.
- macOS: follow its MultiPatch instructions.
- Linux: follow its xdelta instructions.
These are patching directions, not instructions to obtain a game image. The developer requires the user’s own legally obtained, unmodified game data; the README requirement should not be read as an offer of an ISO download.
A physical Melee disc listing, if you are shopping for one, does not by itself prove that you can produce the exact unmodified NTSC 1.02 ISO with the required checksum. Check the disc revision and the lawful means available to you for making a game image; do not assume a retail listing guarantees the patch prerequisite. Slippi likewise says it does not provide game ISOs.
Before patching, keep the original source image separate from the output and make sure you are following the instructions for your operating system. These are sensible file-handling precautions, not additional project requirements. The essential documented checks are the correct NTSC 1.02 revision, an unmodified image and the matching MD5 checksum.
Why won’t my Melee ISO patch?
First check that the source image is NTSC 1.02 and that its MD5 matches the required value exactly. A different revision, region or altered image does not meet the prerequisite and can cause patch failure. The checksum identifies the file contents, so a filename that says “1.02” is not enough on its own.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If the checksum matches, use the instructions for your operating system rather than mixing steps from another platform. The project README specifies drag-and-drop patching on Windows, MultiPatch on macOS and xdelta on Linux. Slippi’s region support is a separate matter: its FAQ says, “We only support NTSC-U/J 1.02.” That Slippi statement does not broaden the arena mod patch’s requirement; the mod README specifies NTSC 1.02.
In other words, diagnose the game image and patching method separately. A patching failure does not automatically mean your controller, computer performance or online settings are at fault. The documented first check is the exact source-image revision and checksum; the next is whether you followed the corresponding platform instructions.
Does the mod work on Slippi?
The mod README discusses Slippi Online and recommends using only default Slippi Gecko codes. It cautions that other codes may cause desyncs, but that is not a claim that every custom-code match will fail or a guarantee that matches using default codes will always succeed.

Slippi is a PC play route associated with standard Melee, while the arena mod requires applying its patch to the specified game image. Keep the software and compatibility claims distinct: the Slippi FAQ states that Slippi supports NTSC-U/J 1.02 and does not provide game ISOs; the mod’s own README states the patch prerequisite. Neither statement proves universal online interoperability for the mod.

For the arena mod, follow the code caution in the Melee-3D README and avoid treating a successful patch as proof that every online configuration will work.
There are two separate checks here: whether the patch can be made from the required source image, and whether a particular Slippi setup works with the patched game and chosen codes. The README’s default-code recommendation addresses the latter cautiously; it does not certify every combination of settings, guarantee a successful match, or erase the patch’s exact input-file requirement.
Do I need a different controller?
The documentation does not establish a special controller requirement for the arena mod. It describes changed uses for directional inputs, the Throttle and C-stick steering, so a player should learn the mod’s bindings rather than assume that a new controller is required.
A standard Melee controller setup may still be relevant, especially for the PC route. Slippi’s FAQ includes controller-adapter setup information, and Melee.tv describes PC play and adapters. But an adapter is an optional part of a PC setup, not a requirement unique to the arena mod. The available documentation does not prescribe a specific new controller for the mod.
If you want a familiar GameCube controller on PC, a GameCube controller adapter for PC is a possible accessory to consider; it is a general PC-input purchase, not a special Melee-3D device. Melee.tv names adapter options including Input Integrity, Nintendo and Mayflash. A player who already has a working controller setup has no documented reason to replace it just to satisfy this mod’s requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How hard is it to learn after regular Melee?
Character knowledge and familiarity with a controller can carry over, but movement and some directional inputs will feel different. The most useful approach is to learn one new layer at a time; the following sequence is a practical recommendation based on the controls the developer documents, not an official curriculum or a tested estimate of hours to competence.
- Start with movement. In a low-pressure match, practice moving toward and away from the camera as well as across the arena. Focus on understanding how those directions affect your position before adding new attack choices.
- Learn the Throttle binding. Check whether it is on its default R binding or has been changed at character select using L or R. Practice choosing forward versus up/down attack inputs so the new directional rule becomes deliberate rather than accidental.
- Add recovery steering. Once movement and attack direction feel familiar, practice relevant recoveries and special moves. Pay attention to the documented Throttle effect on up-special aiming and C-stick steering for some recoveries and moves.
- Revisit stage positioning. Try the documented arenas and notice how the added movement direction affects your approach to positioning. The README lists stages, but it does not prescribe a stage-learning order.
It would be misleading to promise a fixed learning time or to say the mod changes frame data: the reviewed documentation supplies neither a quantified learning study nor evidence of altered frame data. A player’s adjustment will depend on which character and moves they use and how comfortable they become with the added direction and input rules.
Expect familiar concepts and unfamiliar execution to coexist. Knowing a character’s options may help you decide what you want to do, but you still need to learn how this mod maps directional intent to attacks and how added depth affects your position. The practical progression above is a recommendation, not a measured training plan; there is no documented number of sessions or hours needed to become comfortable.

What the documentation does—and does not—establish
The README gives concrete facts about movement, controls, stages, the required game revision, patching routes and a Slippi code caution. It does not establish a minimum PC specification, measured frame rate for the arena mod, player-count statistic, tournament acceptance, quantified learning curve or universal online compatibility.

Those limits matter when deciding whether to install it. The reliable basis for comparison is the project’s documented behavior and requirements, not performance numbers or compatibility assumptions borrowed from another project. In particular, performance observations published for the separate stereoscopic 3DS port should not be attributed to the arena mod.
The project README’s stage list is nine entries, but it is not an adoption metric. The setup instructions identify an exact game-image checksum, but they do not set out a verified hardware shopping list or a cost estimate. The Slippi guidance warns about non-default codes, but it is not an assurance that all online configurations work. These boundaries help keep the comparison useful without turning unknowns into promises.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Melee 3D change frame data?
The walz0/Melee-3D README documents movement and input differences, but does not establish whether frame data is changed. Do not assume either that familiar timing is identical or that it has changed without move-specific documentation.

The project materials cited here do not establish tournament acceptance or a standard competitive ruleset. Check with the specific event or organizer; the stage list and Slippi guidance are not tournament approval.
Does Melee 3D run at 60 FPS?
There is no independently verified frame-rate benchmark for walz0’s arena mod in the cited materials. Performance observations from the separate 3DS project are not a valid substitute.
Will my Slippi controller settings transfer to the mod?
The available documentation does not say whether settings transfer automatically. Confirm the mod’s active bindings, including the Throttle assignment, rather than relying on settings saved for standard Melee.
Can I play walz0’s Melee-3D mod on an original GameCube or Wii?
The project README does not establish direct original-GameCube or Wii support. That is unresolved, not proof that console play is impossible. Standard Melee’s local console route does not verify compatibility for the patched mod.

Those statements describe different requirements. Project Slippi says it supports NTSC-U/J 1.02; walz0’s patch instructions require an unmodified NTSC 1.02 ISO with MD5 0e63d4223b01d9aba596259dc155a174. Slippi’s broader wording should not be treated as changing the patch prerequisite.
Do I need a New Nintendo 3DS, glasses, or a special controller for this mod?
No such requirement is established for walz0’s arena mod. The homebrewed New Nintendo 3DS/XL target belongs to the separate 2gifts/melee-3ds stereoscopic port, not evidence about this patch.
How long does it take to learn after regular Melee?
There is no quantified learning-time study in the project materials. Familiar character and controller knowledge can help, but practice the added movement direction, Throttle attack inputs and relevant recovery steering at your own pace.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: walz0/Melee-3D is a gameplay experiment with added movement depth and changed attack and recovery inputs, not a stereoscopic graphics toggle. Its README lists nine stages and requires a legally obtained, unmodified NTSC 1.02 ISO with a matching checksum. Standard Melee’s GameCube/Wii and PC routes do not prove the arena mod works on original consoles; Slippi use also comes with a default-Gecko-code caution, not a universal compatibility guarantee. If you already know Melee, your character knowledge can carry over, but expect to practice movement, Throttle use and recovery steering before the controls feel natural.
