The Zhaoxin KX-U6780A is an eight-core x86 processor designed by China’s Zhaoxin for PCs and embedded systems. It was an important step in building a Chinese x86 processor ecosystem, but “homegrown” does not mean every part of its production was domestic: the chip was designed by Zhaoxin and fabricated by TSMC in Taiwan.
What is the Zhaoxin KX-U6780A?
The KX-U6780A is an eight-core, eight-thread processor from Zhaoxin’s KaiXian KX-6000 family. Tom’s Hardware identifies its microarchitecture as LuJiaZui and its fabrication process as TSMC 16nm FinFET. It was aimed at Chinese PCs, office machines and embedded systems—not at setting performance records against contemporary AMD or Intel processors.
Zhaoxin was founded in 2013 as a joint venture involving the Shanghai Municipal Government and VIA Technologies. Tom’s Hardware described the initial-capital split as 80%/20%, respectively. VIA’s x86-compatible heritage is relevant context: x86 processor design is constrained by licensing, so the KX-U6780A emerged from a combination of Chinese state participation and VIA’s existing x86-related capabilities.

Advantech’s AIMB-Z70 documentation lists KX-U6780A configurations with dual-channel DDR4-2400/2666 support, up to 64GB of memory and a ZX-200 chipset. Those are board-platform details, not a guarantee that every KX-U6780A system supports the same memory capacity or speeds.

Is it really China’s first homegrown x86 CPU?
“Homegrown” is best understood here as a description of domestic processor design and strategic development, not end-to-end domestic manufacture. Zhaoxin is a Chinese processor designer, and the KX-U6780A was positioned for the Chinese market. But its LuJiaZui processor die was fabricated by TSMC in Taiwan on a 16nm process. The word “first” also depends on how a source defines a homegrown x86 processor; the available evidence establishes the KX-U6780A’s significance as a Chinese-designed x86 effort, not an unqualified claim that no earlier project could meet that label.
The KX-6000 generation also introduced Zhaoxin’s integrated graphics engine, replacing earlier dependence on a separate graphics processor in the chipset. The LuJiaZui core is described as superscalar, out-of-order and multi-issue. Detailed block diagrams were not published in the reviewed technical coverage, so those broad architectural labels should not be mistaken for a complete account of its internal design.

How fast is the KX-U6780A?
It was substantially faster than Zhaoxin’s older four-core KX-C4580 in Tom’s Hardware’s reported tests. That improvement reflects a newer design, a higher clock and four additional cores; it does not make the KX-U6780A competitive with contemporary mainstream AMD and Intel CPUs.

These are results from the specific review comparison, not universal performance guarantees; workloads, system configuration and software affect results. In separate normalized IPC testing, Tom’s Hardware found the KX-U6780A behind AMD’s pre-Zen, Excavator-based A10-9700 on the tested metrics, with Ryzen and Intel Kaby Lake/Coffee Lake processors farther ahead. The practical trade-off is therefore platform independence and a domestic Chinese x86 design ecosystem versus the stronger per-core performance and wider motherboard choice offered by AMD and Intel alternatives.

What motherboard works with a KX-U6780A?
The processor is soldered into a 35mm × 35mm HFCBGA package, so it is not a socketed CPU that can be installed in a typical desktop motherboard. A buyer needs a compatible board with the KX-U6780A already fitted. The C1888 mini-ITX board was developed for the eight-core processor. Launch coverage described DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, SATA/mSATA storage, an intended M.2 slot, PCIe expansion and multiple display and USB outputs; confirm the exact board revision and fitted options before choosing memory or storage.
The KX-U6780A also appeared in industrial-board designs. Advantech’s AIMB-Z70 documentation lists the processor alongside a ZX-200 chipset, illustrating that the platform was not limited to enthusiast-oriented board bundles.

What a purchase normally means
Because the CPU is soldered, the practical product to look for is a “Zhaoxin KX-U6780A C1888 motherboard combo” or a compatible industrial motherboard, rather than a bare-chip upgrade. Historical launch coverage reported a C1888 bundle pre-order at 4,300 yuan, approximately $620 at the time, and described availability as limited. That historical pre-order figure is not a current price or evidence of present stock. Check regional availability, board revision, memory form factor and included components before buying.

The chip’s importance is strategic rather than a matter of leading-edge speed. Relatively few companies can legally develop x86 processors, and the KX-U6780A represented a Chinese-designed attempt to expand local x86 capability and support compatible software in Chinese PC and embedded markets. Its VIA lineage and TSMC fabrication are essential context: it was a meaningful step toward supply-chain independence, not proof of a fully domestic production chain.
