Daisy is an artificial-intelligence “granny” created by Virgin Media O2 to answer suspected scam calls and keep fraudsters talking. She is a campaign and awareness demonstration—not a real person, consumer app, subscription or publicly available call-forwarding service.
What is AI granny Daisy?
Virgin Media O2 introduced Daisy on 14 November 2024 as a fraud-prevention project. Her job is simple: occupy a scammer so the caller has less time to target a real victim.
Daisy is deliberately portrayed as an elderly woman who speaks slowly, sounds distracted and asks ordinary questions. Conversations can drift into knitting patterns, scones, grandchildren or computer problems while she avoids completing the fraudster’s requested steps.
She is not a real grandmother. Daisy is a synthetic voice and language-model persona built for O2’s campaign.

- 4. Emotionally Expressive & Always Evolving 💫 LOOI’s rich animations bring emotion to life—joy, surprise, curiosity, mischief, and everything in between. His reactions aren’t pre-set; they adapt to what’s happening around him. And because his behaviors update through the app, LOOI keeps learning new tricks, new expressions, and new ways to interact. You’re not buying a finished product—you’re bringing home a character that keeps evolving.
- 5. A Mind of His Own: Personality & Autonomy ✨ LOOI isn’t designed to obey every command—he’s designed to understand and respond. With TangibleFuture’s autonomous behavior system, LOOI combines environmental understanding with large-model reasoning to make spontaneous decisions and express them through animation and movement. His behavior isn’t fully predictable. He has his own ideas, which makes him feel truly alive.
How Daisy wastes a scam caller’s time
1. O2 attracts suspected fraud calls
The Guardian reported that O2 placed telephone numbers on websites likely to attract scammers, including pages advertising implausibly attractive competition prizes. Calls to those numbers could then be routed into Daisy’s conversation system.
2. Speech is converted to text
TechCrunch described a pipeline that first transcribes the caller’s speech. Converting the audio into text lets the system interpret what the caller is asking instead of relying on a fixed list of recorded replies.
3. A custom language model chooses a response
A custom large language model selects the next reply using Daisy’s personality and training for scam scenarios. The aim is not to expose the caller or argue with them; it is to remain plausible, slow and conversational.

4. Text becomes Daisy’s voice
A text-to-speech model speaks the selected answer in Daisy’s elderly-character voice. This loop—speech-to-text, language-model response and text-to-speech—allows an open-ended conversation while keeping Daisy’s manner consistent.

CBS News reported on 26 November 2024 that Daisy had handled more than 1,000 scammer conversations and that the longest call lasted about 40 minutes. The Guardian likewise reported calls lasting up to 40 minutes.
Those are campaign-reported figures, not an independently audited measurement of reduced fraud. No independent study cited for this project demonstrates that Daisy lowered victimisation rates; the documented result is that the system engaged suspected fraudsters in lengthy calls.

Who helped create Daisy?
Well-known scam-baiter Jim Browning helped Virgin Media O2 shape Daisy’s scenarios and responses. His experience with fraud operations informed the situations the persona was designed to handle.
Murray Mackenzie, Virgin Media O2’s director of fraud, described the project to CBS News: “The newest member of our fraud-prevention team, Daisy is turning the tables on scammers – outsmarting and outmaneuvering them at their own cruel game simply by keeping them on the line.”
Was Daisy released as an app or service?
No. O2 presented Daisy as a campaign and awareness demonstration rather than a normal consumer product. The Guardian reported that the project was not rolled out at large scale. No official public signup service, consumer app, subscription or verified retail merchandise was identified.

That means you cannot officially forward your own scam calls to Daisy through a documented O2 feature. Be cautious of websites or social-media accounts claiming to sell “the Daisy AI granny” unless O2 independently confirms them.
Is Daisy a call blocker?
No. A call blocker or carrier fraud filter attempts to identify, silence or reject unwanted calls. Daisy does the opposite: when a suspected scam call reaches her campaign number, she engages the caller and prolongs the conversation.
The distinction matters:
- Daisy: a campaign persona that talks to suspected scammers.
- Call-screening or blocking tools: consumer or carrier services intended to warn about, filter or stop unwanted calls.
- Evidence: Daisy’s published figures describe conversations and duration, not a controlled comparison with blocking tools or a measured change in scam losses.
What happened when scammers realised Daisy was automated?
Some callers eventually guessed that Daisy was a bot. Even so, the project’s value was the time spent before that recognition. O2 said the demonstration showed how an AI persona could turn a scammer’s own scripted interaction into a prolonged detour.

What Daisy can—and cannot—prove
What is established
- Daisy was introduced by Virgin Media O2 on 14 November 2024.
- She uses speech recognition, a custom language model and text-to-speech.
- Her persona is intentionally slow, confused and conversational.
- CBS News reported more than 1,000 conversations and a longest call of about 40 minutes; the Guardian also reported calls up to 40 minutes.
- Jim Browning contributed to the scenarios and responses.
What is not established
- Daisy is not documented as a generally available O2 app, phone number or subscription.
- There is no cited independent evaluation showing that she reduced fraud losses or victimisation.
- The reported conversation totals and durations are campaign figures, not an independently audited impact study.
What should you do if you receive a scam call?
Daisy’s existence does not make it safe to play along with callers yourself. Do not provide passwords, one-time codes, payment details or remote-access control. Hang up, contact the organisation through a number you find independently, and report the incident using the relevant service in your country. Use your carrier’s verified scam-alert or call-screening features if available; those are separate from Daisy.
The Bottom Line
Daisy is a real O2 demonstration of an AI persona—not a real grandmother and not a public app. Its documented purpose was to consume scammers’ time, with campaign reports of more than 1,000 conversations and calls lasting up to about 40 minutes, but no independent evidence that it reduced victimisation.
