A running FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a valid live stream. FFmpeg must publish to the intended MediaMTX path, MediaMTX must forward that path to YouTube, and YouTube must accept the destination, key, and media tracks. Check those links in order; the fault could be at any boundary.

Trace the stream from FFmpeg to YouTube

There are two separate connections to distinguish: FFmpeg may publish to MediaMTX, and MediaMTX may then forward that stream to YouTube. First inspect FFmpeg’s complete command, especially its final output URL and format. MediaMTX’s FFmpeg documentation shows an RTMP example ending in -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream; the host, protocol, and path in your command should match the MediaMTX instance and path you intend to use. The command’s output might instead target YouTube directly or a different MediaMTX path. MediaMTX FFmpeg publishing documentation describes the example and supported publishing protocols.

If FFmpeg publishes to MediaMTX, a running process only establishes that the process has not exited. It does not establish that MediaMTX has an active publisher on the expected path or that YouTube is receiving a forwarded stream.

Check whether MediaMTX sees the expected publisher and path

Review MediaMTX logs at the time of the attempt. Look for configuration loading, a publisher connection to the expected path, path activity, disconnections, and errors. If the current output does not give enough detail, set logLevel to debug temporarily and check where logs are sent: MediaMTX supports stdout, file, and syslog destinations. After configuration changes, validate the configuration with the documented --validate-conf option. See the MediaMTX configuration reference.

A log showing no publisher on the expected path points you back to FFmpeg’s destination, protocol, or path. A publisher connection does not, by itself, prove that MediaMTX’s separate YouTube forwarding connection is working. The configuration reference identifies its content as the copy for the latest release, v1.21.1; that does not establish which version you have installed.

Verify MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding destination

If MediaMTX is meant to send the stream to YouTube, check that the active path has the intended forwarding destination and a valid stream key. MediaMTX’s forwarding guide shows the ingest URL and key separated by #. The guide cautions that its example YouTube hostname reflects what YouTube reported when that guide was updated, so do not assume the example is still current. Copy the current ingest address and stream key from your YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s live streaming help also explains copying a stream key into an encoder.

For encryption in transit, MediaMTX recommends changing the forwarding scheme to rtmps://. Use the current endpoint provided for your channel; generic documentation cannot establish your account-specific key or which ingest address YouTube currently presents to you.

Confirm YouTube receives both audio and video

Check the outgoing stream that MediaMTX forwards, not just whether FFmpeg is producing video locally. MediaMTX’s forwarding documentation states: “YouTube requires streams to have both a video and an audio track. Video-only streams are silently rejected.” A video-only output can therefore leave YouTube showing the stream as offline without an obvious rejection message. Verify that both tracks reach the YouTube-facing output.

Use timeout and connection errors as clues

If MediaMTX logs show a failed forwarding connection or timeout, first verify the current destination URL and key in YouTube Live Control Room. Then investigate network reachability from the machine running MediaMTX. YouTube advises checking the encoder documentation when a connection times out. A timeout identifies a connection problem to investigate; without your logs and deployment details, it does not establish a particular DNS, firewall, TLS, routing, or account fault. Avoid changing ports or network settings based on the timeout alone.

A practical order for troubleshooting

  1. Read FFmpeg’s full command. Confirm the final output URL, format, protocol, host, and path. Establish whether FFmpeg targets MediaMTX or YouTube directly.
  2. Check MediaMTX logs and path activity. Confirm the expected publisher connects to the expected path. Temporarily enable debug logging if needed, and use --validate-conf after configuration edits.
  3. Check the forward destination and key. If MediaMTX forwards to YouTube, compare its configured URL and key with the current values in YouTube Live Control Room.
  4. Verify both media tracks. Confirm that the YouTube-facing output contains audio as well as video.
  5. Investigate connection errors from the MediaMTX host. If the destination and credentials are current but forwarding still times out, check reachability from that host and consult YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Without the actual FFmpeg command, MediaMTX configuration and logs, and any Live Control Room error, it is not possible to identify which link is failing in a particular setup.
