For a single prerecorded video that you want to loop on YouTube Live, OBS is the simpler fit: add the video as a Media Source, enable Loop, and stream the scene to YouTube. MediaMTX is a media server and router, not a documented substitute for OBS’s local-file loop control. It becomes useful when you need to receive, route, convert, or forward a stream—such as forwarding a stream to YouTube over RTMPS.

How OBS and MediaMTX differ

What you need to know OBS direct to YouTube MediaMTX in the workflow
Main job Plays and composes local media, then streams the scene. Receives, routes, or forwards streams as a media server and proxy.
Where looping is documented The Media Source has a Loop property that makes the file play again after it finishes. The reviewed documentation covers routing and forwarding, not an equivalent local-file loop control.
What else is required OBS, the local video file, and YouTube connection details. MediaMTX plus a publishing client or other stream source, and forwarding configuration for YouTube.
Best fit A straightforward broadcast from one machine using a prerecorded file. A workflow needing stream routing, protocol conversion, or forwarding between endpoints.

This comparison describes the documented workflows; it does not establish that MediaMTX can never be paired with file playback. MediaMTX calls itself a media router for moving streams between endpoints, while OBS documents local-file playback and looping. MediaMTX’s introduction and OBS’s Media Sources guide explain those respective roles.

Loop a prerecorded video with OBS

  1. Create a scene and add the file. In OBS, select or create a scene, use Sources > + > Media Source, give the source a name, and choose the local video file in its properties.
  2. Enable looping. Turn on the source’s Loop property. OBS defines this as replaying the file after playback completes. The Media Sources guide lists supported extensions including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.
  3. Check the scene’s audio and picture. Confirm the video is visible and that its audio appears in the OBS audio mixer. YouTube needs both a video and an audio track; MediaMTX’s forwarding guide explicitly warns that YouTube silently rejects video-only streams. Check your actual source and output before going live.
  4. Set up the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube’s live setup, create or select the broadcast and copy the current Stream URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private. Labels and setup screens can change, so use the values shown in your account rather than a URL copied from an old example.
  5. Preview, then start streaming. Confirm the scene looks and sounds right, start the stream in OBS, and verify that YouTube receives it before relying on the broadcast. OBS documents that the file repeats after completion; it does not promise a seamless or gapless boundary, so inspect the transition with your own file and setup.

OBS’s Media Sources documentation covers the source and loop property. These playback steps are separate from YouTube ingest: a loop can work locally even if the stream key or connection settings are wrong.

When MediaMTX belongs in the setup

Use MediaMTX when you have a reason to insert a server between a stream source and its destination—not merely because you need a local video to repeat. For example, OBS can publish to MediaMTX using RTMP or WHIP, and can read a MediaMTX stream via RTSP, as shown in the publish documentation and OBS reading guide.

MediaMTX can also forward a stream to YouTube. Its forwarding guide shows a YouTube destination configured with a URL and stream key and recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit. The guide cautions that its example YouTube URL may no longer be current. Retrieve the current Stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s live setup when configuring forwarding; never expose the key in a public config or screenshot.

That forwarding example is not a documented replacement for OBS’s Media Source loop control. If your requirement is simply “play this local file over and over,” start with OBS. If you need a routing or forwarding layer, MediaMTX can take that server role, with OBS or another source supplying the stream.

Common problems and fixes

  • The file stops instead of repeating: Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled for the source that is actually in the live scene.
  • YouTube does not accept the stream: Confirm the current Stream URL and key in YouTube’s live setup, then check the OBS or MediaMTX destination configuration. Do not rely on an old URL from an example.
  • YouTube receives no picture or rejects a video-only feed: Confirm the scene outputs video and audio. MediaMTX’s YouTube forwarding documentation says both tracks are required and video-only streams are silently rejected.
  • The picture or sound glitches at the repeat point: OBS documents replay after file completion, not gapless transitions. Preview the loop with the actual file and setup; the boundary may need editing in the source video if it is disruptive.
  • OBS and MediaMTX are both involved, but the stream does not arrive: Check which component is publishing and which is reading or forwarding, then verify the configured protocol and endpoint on each side. MediaMTX’s read streams guide and publish streams guide describe those distinct directions.
