Maxsun’s MS-Challenger MCIO ITX motherboard replaces the usual PCIe x16 graphics-card slot with two MCIO 8i connectors. With the right cable and an MCIO-to-PCIe adapter, a standard graphics card can sit on the other side of a compact chassis from the motherboard. The result is a flexible internal layout—not a GPU connected outside the computer—and so far it is a demonstrated platform, not a workstation with a published price or retail release date.
How MCIO changes the motherboard layout
A conventional Mini-ITX board’s PCIe x16 slot places the graphics card beside the motherboard. That arrangement can dictate the shape and available space inside a small case. Maxsun’s MS-Challenger MCIO ITX board takes a different approach: PCIe lanes leave the motherboard through two MCIO 8i connectors and travel by cable to the graphics card elsewhere in the chassis.
MCIO stands for Mini Cool Edge I/O. Maxsun describes it as an SFF-TA-1016 connector system with a 0.6 mm pin pitch; each MCIO 8i connector has 74 pins and carries eight PCIe lanes. The graphics card still uses its normal PCIe connector, so an MCIO-to-PCIe adapter, bridge or riser is needed at the card end. The board-side connector is the change; the GPU itself is not converted to MCIO.
What Maxsun says the board supports
The board measures 170 × 170 mm, the Mini-ITX form factor. Maxsun lists Q870, Z890, H810 and B860 variants. The available lane arrangements depend on the chipset version:

Maxsun states that MCIO supports PCIe 5.0 signaling at 32 GT/s per lane. It rates the dual-MCIO PCIe 5.0 x16 arrangement at 128 GT/s, or approximately 64 GB/s. Those are manufacturer-stated interface figures, not results from an independently measured application or graphics benchmark.
What the demonstration shows—and what it does not
At Intel Connection 2026, Maxsun showed a Z890 Mini-ITX workstation with the motherboard and graphics card mounted on opposite sides of a Cooler Master i100 Air chassis. The setup used a Hyper 510 low-profile CPU cooler and a V850 SFX Gold power supply. It illustrates the central idea: the cable can let the builder place the GPU where the case allows, rather than directly alongside the board.

- Ultra High Performance Cable: The mini cool edge IO cable is designed for the most intensive datacenters and storage servers; Connect equipment at unparalleled speeds with this MCIO cable
- Key Protocol Support: This SFF-TA-1016 cable supports popular data protocols in high performance computing and data center applications, including PCIe 5.0, SAS 3.0, and Ethernet at unparalleled throughputs
- Secure Connectors: The MCIO connectors create a secure connection between equipment, ensuring a reliable and consistent connection
- Wide Array of Applications: This MCIO cable is used for specialized applications in datacenter and high performance computing applications, including as an interconnect, riser connection, or motherboard to device connections for devices with 74-pin MCIO connectors
- Perfect Cable Length: The 2.8ft cable length is ideal for use in datacenters and servers, ensuring optimal connection length while taking up a minimal amount of space
That flexibility may help with compact-case layouts, but the demonstration does not establish a particular reduction in system size, better cooling, or improved performance. The cited coverage did not identify the GPU or cable length, and reported no measured signal-integrity margin, sustained performance, temperatures, noise or airflow improvement. PCIe 5.0’s high-speed signaling makes the cable and connector implementation important; the board’s claimed link rate alone cannot establish how a particular cable-and-adapter combination will perform.
What you need to reproduce the arrangement
- An MCIO-equipped motherboard: the MS-Challenger MCIO ITX family uses two MCIO 8i connectors, but lane configuration varies by chipset version.
- A compatible MCIO 8i cable: check that the cable, connectors and intended PCIe generation and lane width match the board and adapter. The demonstration’s cable length and exact cable model were not reported.
- An MCIO-to-PCIe adapter, bridge or riser: a standard graphics card does not normally have an MCIO socket. Confirm the adapter’s compatibility with the chosen GPU and motherboard before planning the build.
- A case layout that accommodates the parts: the board, GPU, cable bend and power connections all need room. The shown system used the Cooler Master i100 Air, a Hyper 510 low-profile cooler and a V850 SFX Gold PSU; the demonstration does not establish that these are required or that every combination fits.
Is it a product you can buy now?
Maxsun’s board-family announcement and the workstation demonstration establish the design and listed specifications, but the cited coverage gives no retail release date or price for the demonstrated platform. No independent benchmark results are reported either. Until sales documentation and specific compatible accessories are available, treat it as a technology demonstration and announced product family—not as a ready-to-order compact workstation with proven performance.
