Matter is a smart-home interoperability standard; Apple Home is a platform that can control supported Matter accessories. A Matter label alone does not guarantee that a particular device will pair with Apple Home or expose all its features there. Before buying, check the exact model, its network connection, any hub requirements, and the functions Apple Home supports.
What is the difference between Matter and Apple Home?
Matter defines how compatible smart-home devices communicate across platforms. Apple Home—often still called HomeKit by shoppers—provides Apple’s app and ecosystem for controlling accessories, including supported Matter devices. Matter can make a device usable across multiple compatible platforms, but it does not replace those platforms.
That distinction matters at checkout: a Matter certification is not a blanket promise that every feature will work in Apple Home. Check the manufacturer’s listing for the exact model and Apple’s current compatibility information.
| Buyer question | Matter | Apple Home |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | An IP-based smart-home connectivity and interoperability standard. | Apple’s smart-home platform for controlling HomeKit and supported Matter accessories. |
| What should I verify? | Certification, connection type, device category, and whether multi-admin or bridge support applies. | Exact Apple Home support, device and hub requirements, and which features the model exposes. |
| Does one guarantee the other? | No. A Matter label does not establish compatibility with every platform or access to every feature. | Confirm the intended pairing and functions against Apple’s supported-device information and the manufacturer’s model-specific notes. |

Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
- [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
- [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
- [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
- [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.
What to check before you buy
- Verify the exact model. Look for Matter certification and explicit Apple Home or Home app support on the product’s own listing. A promise that a brand or product family supports Matter does not prove that every model does.
- Check the connection type. Matter devices can use Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. Bluetooth Low Energy may be used during setup, but that does not mean Bluetooth is the device’s ongoing network connection. If the product uses Thread, confirm that your home has compatible Thread-capable infrastructure for the setup and use you want.
- Match the device category and functions. Apple currently lists air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, sockets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and several types of sensors among supported Matter accessories. Confirm both that the category is supported and that the specific functions you care about appear in Apple Home; category support alone does not establish every capability.
- Look for setup dependencies. The manufacturer may require its own app, a firmware update, or extra hardware for initial setup or advanced settings. Read the manual and model-specific compatibility notes, especially if you plan to rely on Apple Home alone.
- Check how sharing works. Matter multi-admin can let a compatible device be used with more than one platform. If you have already paired it elsewhere, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for sharing it or adding it to another ecosystem; pairing steps and code requirements can vary.
- Decide whether you need remote access or automations. A hub may be needed for Apple Home features such as remote access, automations, or sharing, depending on your setup. The Connectivity Standards Alliance also says that controlling Matter devices while away requires an internet-connected Matter controller in the home. Check current requirements for the platform and device you plan to use.

Can you add a Matter accessory to Apple Home without a home hub?
Apple’s current guidance says an iPhone running iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub. Apple nevertheless recommends a hub for the best experience. Hub requirements can also depend on what you want to do: remote access and other home features are not the same as basic local control.

Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M100 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
Thread products need a separate check. Thread is one of Matter’s network options, and Apple’s setup guidance describes additional Thread-capable infrastructure considerations. Do not assume that the iPhone used for setup is itself all the infrastructure a Thread accessory needs; confirm the requirements for the exact accessory and your Apple hardware.

Will every Matter feature appear in Apple Home?
No. Matter’s multi-admin capability is intended to let a device be shared across compatible ecosystems, but it does not guarantee that each platform exposes every manufacturer feature. A device may work for basic control in Apple Home while requiring the maker’s app for configuration or additional functions. Check both the model’s feature notes and Apple’s supported categories before buying.
The Matter standard is also evolving, but a standard update does not mean every device or platform has implemented its new features. The Connectivity Standards Alliance announced Matter 1.5 on November 20, 2025, adding cameras, closures, soil sensors, and energy-management capabilities. It announced Matter 1.6 on June 17, 2026, with improvements to setup, multi-ecosystem device management, and context-driven control. Those announcements describe changes to the standard, not guaranteed support in a particular product.

Can existing Zigbee or Z-Wave devices work with Matter?
They may be made available through a compatible bridge, but support depends on the bridge and the functions it exposes. A bridge does not automatically make every connected device’s capabilities available in Matter or Apple Home. Confirm the bridge’s supported devices and functions as well as the accessory’s own compatibility.
