Play Mass Effect, then Mass Effect 2, then Mass Effect 3, importing the same Shepard’s progress as you go. For the story expansions, fit the first game’s Bring Down the Sky into its open exploration, handle the second game’s Reaper IFF and crew-rescue stretch carefully, play Arrival after the suicide mission, and finish Mass Effect 3’s Citadel content before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. These are spoiler-light timing recommendations, not a mandatory sequence imposed by the games.
What order should you play the trilogy in?
Follow the games’ release order: Mass Effect → Mass Effect 2 → Mass Effect 3. Import your Shepard forward between games rather than starting each one with a disconnected character. The sequence preserves the trilogy’s developing story and lets earlier progress contribute to the later campaign. Electronic Arts’ 2021 launch announcement describes the collection as all three single-player games together with more than 40 DLC items; that total includes story, weapons, armor, and other packs, not 40 separate story campaigns.
The order below focuses on narrative timing and points where missions can affect how much else you can do before the finale. It does not require completing every optional assignment or expansion. If you want the broadest version of the story, use the checklists; if you prefer a shorter run, prioritize the main games and the timing-sensitive missions.
What is included in Legendary Edition, and what is missing?
Mass Effect Legendary Edition includes the three games and the major single-player DLC listed for the collection. Do not use old instructions for separately downloading the original games’ DLC as an installation checklist for this remaster: its included-content list is different from the original releases’ acquisition process.

Some equipment packs are integrated into normal acquisition and progression rather than appearing all at once at the start. The collection’s Genesis comics are optional aids for establishing a starting point, not required missions. Mass Effect 3’s Extended Cut is the default finale in the collection, not a separate side mission that needs scheduling.
What should you play in Mass Effect 1?
Begin with the first game, unlock galaxy travel through its opening Citadel sequence, and complete Bring Down the Sky during the free-exploration portion of the campaign. You can order the major worlds to suit your preference; there is no exact required slot for the expansion between them.
Mass Effect 1 checklist
- Start the campaign and finish the opening Citadel sequence. Once galaxy travel is available, you can choose when to visit the main worlds.
- Consider Therum early if you want Liara in the team sooner. This is a recommended order for recruiting her, not a requirement for the other worlds.
- Play X57: Bring Down the Sky during free exploration. Leave the Citadel first, then complete it before the final stretch. It does not have to be placed between Feros and Noveria in a particular order.
- Finish any optional assignments you care about before the endgame. Then import this Shepard into Mass Effect 2.
Do not add Pinnacle Station to a Legendary Edition checklist: it is absent from the collection’s included-content list. EA support pages that describe obtaining it refer to the original Mass Effect, which is why those directions can appear to conflict with the remaster’s contents.

When should you play Mass Effect 2’s DLC?
Recruit Zaeed and Kasumi while assembling the team, fit the flexible side content around recruitment and loyalty missions, and complete the loyalty work and ship preparations you want before acquiring the Reaper IFF. After the ensuing crew-abduction event, avoid unrelated detours and move toward the suicide mission. Then play Arrival after that mission, ideally as the last Mass Effect 2 story operation before importing into Mass Effect 3.
Mass Effect 2 checklist
- Recruit Zaeed and Kasumi during team assembly. Their DLC missions are The Price of Revenge and Stolen Memory. Complete those missions and any other desired loyalty missions before committing to the endgame stretch.
- Place the flexible DLC where it fits. Normandy Crash Site, the Firewalker Pack, and Overlord can sit among recruitment and loyalty missions. This is flexible content, not a prescribed plot sequence.
- Do wanted loyalty missions and prepare the ship before Reaper IFF. Treat this as the key scheduling point. Once the crew-abduction event follows, avoid unrelated missions and proceed to the suicide mission rather than relying on a supposedly safe universal number of detours.
- Choose when to play Lair of the Shadow Broker. It can be played during the campaign, or after the suicide mission if that is a better narrative fit for you.
- Play Arrival after the suicide mission. Its recommended position is the final Mass Effect 2 story operation before carrying your Shepard into Mass Effect 3. This is a story-order recommendation; the game does not forbid playing it earlier.
The important distinction is that the Reaper IFF begins a sensitive crew-rescue stretch, while some DLC—especially Lair of the Shadow Broker—can still be placed after the suicide mission. Do not treat all post-collection content as if it has the same timing rule.
When should you play Mass Effect 3’s DLC?
Recruit Javik early through From Ashes, fit Omega and Leviathan into the middle-to-late campaign, and leave the Citadel shore-leave arc and party until late enough to include more surviving companions. Complete those Citadel activities, along with other assignments you want to finish, before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters.

Mass Effect 3 checklist
- Complete From Ashes / Priority: Eden Prime early. Do it after it becomes available if you want Javik present for more of the campaign.
- Fit Omega / Citadel: Aria T’Loak into the middle of the story. One recommended placement is after Priority: The Citadel II; it is not the only narratively valid timing.
- Complete Leviathan / Citadel: Dr. Bryson before the endgame. A suggested placement is late in the campaign, around the stretch after Thessia.
- Save the Citadel shore-leave arc and party for late enough to include more surviving companions. Finish both before Priority: Cerberus Headquarters.
- Wrap up wanted assignments, then launch Priority: Cerberus Headquarters. It is the cutoff for the optional campaign activities addressed here; proceed to the finale afterward.
Extended Cut needs no separate placement in this sequence. It is already the default ending in Legendary Edition, rather than an optional mission to install or play before the headquarters operation.
Does completing more of the trilogy affect the final fights?
EA’s Mass Effect team says, “The more content you complete across the entire trilogy, the more likely you’ll be prepared for the final fights in its conclusion.” The statement supports carrying progress forward and completing content, but it does not promise a particular ending or establish a guaranteed outcome from any one mission. EA also says external multiplayer no longer determines Galactic Readiness in Legendary Edition.
That is a reason to complete content you care about across the three games, not a reason to treat every assignment as mandatory. Keep the distinction between a useful broad playthrough and the timing-sensitive missions: optional content can be selective, while the Reaper IFF and Priority: Cerberus Headquarters are the points around which to plan.

Which edition should you use for this order?
For a straightforward trilogy run with the listed major single-player DLC already bundled, Legendary Edition is the simplest fit. The original games are a distinct case: their DLC availability and acquisition directions should be checked for the specific original release, and an EA support article about classic Pinnacle Station should not be read as a promise that the remaster includes it.
EA identifies PC as well as PS4 and Xbox One as platforms for the collection. The available information does not establish a platform-specific difference in the DLC checklist, nor does it establish a current store price, disc inventory, or offer. Select the edition for the system you own and use its in-game content list rather than assuming old standalone installation steps apply.

Can Genesis replace playing the first Mass Effect?
Genesis is an optional starting-point aid for establishing a Shepard’s story, not one of the trilogy’s full campaign games. The recommended trilogy sequence still begins with Mass Effect if you want to play the complete story from its beginning.
