To market a business on LinkedIn, build a complete LinkedIn Page, publish useful content for a clearly defined professional audience, and use paid campaigns when they fit a specific business goal. For ads, choose an objective that matches the action you want, then measure results against that objective rather than treating every click or impression as success.

Start with a clear audience and business goal

Before choosing posts or ads, define who you want to reach and what you want them to do. A goal might be improving awareness among a professional audience, bringing people to a resource, or generating leads. LinkedIn’s August 12, 2025 getting-started guide recommends deciding on the desired customer action first; that decision helps determine the campaign objective, creative, and measurement.

Keep the intended audience specific enough to guide content and targeting, but grounded in the people who could actually buy, use, or influence your offering. LinkedIn lists criteria such as company name and size, school, interests, groups, skills, job title, and seniority in its campaign setup guidance. Choose relevant attributes rather than assuming that adding more filters will improve a campaign.

Build a useful LinkedIn Page and publish consistently

Your LinkedIn Page is your organization’s home on the platform. LinkedIn says Pages are free and recommends completing the profile so prospective customers can understand the brand and its people. Include clear information about what the organization does, whom it serves, and how visitors can learn more. See LinkedIn’s overview of using LinkedIn for marketing.

Use the Page to share material that helps the audience understand a problem, idea, product category, or area of expertise. LinkedIn recommends engaging content, fresh ideas, and thought leadership, and cautions that sales-heavy posts generally do not engage well. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of reach or ranking. Page analytics can help you see how content performs and inform what to publish next.

LinkedIn’s overview also claims images receive over six times more engagement than text-only content. The result does not state a publication year or methodology, so treat this as LinkedIn’s claim rather than a current, independently established benchmark; it is not a reason to add visuals when they do not serve the post.

Choose an ad objective that matches the action

LinkedIn groups campaign objectives into awareness, consideration, and conversions. The objective affects campaign setup and optimization, so choose based on the outcome you want—not simply the format you already have in mind. LinkedIn’s getting-started guide and objective guide describe the framework.

Objective group Use it when Example measurement
Awareness You want your intended audience to see or recognize a brand, idea, or offering. LinkedIn gives impressions and CPM as examples of awareness metrics in its August 2025 guide.
Consideration You want people to engage with content or take an intermediate step, such as visiting a page. Choose measures that reflect the action you asked people to take; the appropriate metric depends on the campaign.
Conversions You want a defined outcome, such as a lead or tracked action on your website. LinkedIn gives lead count and cost per conversion as examples for lead-focused campaigns in its August 2025 guide.

The examples are not a universal scorecard: pick reporting metrics that correspond to your objective and the business result you need to evaluate.

Select an ad format for the audience and journey

LinkedIn’s ad-format guidance describes several ways to reach members. The right choice depends on the message, audience, and action sought. Labels and availability may change, so check the live Campaign Manager interface when setting up a campaign.

  • Sponsored Content: Feed-based formats include single-image, video, carousel, document, event, thought-leader, article, and newsletter ads.
  • Sponsored messaging: Message Ads and Conversation Ads deliver sponsored messages to members.
  • Dynamic ads: Spotlight Ads and Follower Ads are examples of formats tailored to a member context.
  • Text ads: A text-based option for reaching a professional audience on LinkedIn.

These formats are listed in LinkedIn’s September 5, 2025 guide to LinkedIn ad types and its advertising setup guidance. Match the creative to the task: for example, a document can present substantive material, while a video can demonstrate something visually. The format itself does not establish that a campaign will perform well.

Promote a Page post or create an ad for a specific audience?

You can promote an existing Page post, or create Direct Sponsored Content for a target audience. LinkedIn says Direct Sponsored Content does not appear as a Page update and can be useful for testing variations or delivering more specific content to an audience. See its ad-type guide.

Choose where prospects should convert

The conversion path should match where you want the person to act. LinkedIn’s objective guide distinguishes on-platform lead collection from actions tracked on an advertiser’s website.

  • Use a Lead Gen Form when you want members to submit their information on LinkedIn. LinkedIn describes these forms as prefilled to simplify the member experience.
  • Use a website-conversion campaign when you want people to complete an action on your own site. Conversion tracking is used to measure that action.

Consider the journey after the form or click as well as the ad itself. An on-platform form keeps the submission on LinkedIn; a website path sends the prospect to your own destination. Choose the route that fits the intended action and how you plan to handle the resulting leads or conversions.

Set up, launch, and improve a paid campaign

LinkedIn’s six-step advertising workflow is to select an objective, define audience targeting, choose an ad format, set a budget and schedule, create the ad, and measure and optimize it. The exact controls and available choices can change, so use the current Campaign Manager interface alongside LinkedIn’s six-step advertising training.

  1. Choose the objective: Select awareness, consideration, or conversion based on the outcome you want.
  2. Define the audience: Use the professional or company attributes that describe the relevant audience for this offer.
  3. Select the format: Choose a format that can communicate the message and support the desired action.
  4. Set budget and schedule: Decide what the campaign can spend and when it should run. LinkedIn’s cited guidance does not establish a universal budget or guarantee a return.
  5. Create the ad: Make the offer and next step clear, and ensure the destination or form supports that step.
  6. Measure and optimize: Review results using metrics tied to the objective, then use those observations to guide changes.

Measure results without guessing at success

Start measurement by asking whether the campaign achieved its chosen goal. Impressions or CPM may help assess an awareness campaign; lead count and cost per conversion may be relevant for a lead campaign. For other objectives, select metrics that reflect the action you intended. LinkedIn’s August 2025 guide recommends choosing reporting metrics to match the objective.

To learn which creative works better, LinkedIn recommends running multiple ad variations while changing one variable at a time. Compare the results, focus budget on stronger performers, and apply what you learn to the next round. Its measurement and optimization guidance presents this as a way to iterate; it does not promise a particular outcome. The sources do not specify a universal budget, conversion rate, or return on ad spend.
