Manufacturers surveyed by Propel and Talker Research expect AI connected through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to improve productivity, speed decisions and accelerate product development. Those figures measure expectations—not independently verified gains. Separate examples show how MCP can connect AI agents to live product and finance systems, but they also highlight the need for governed data access, carefully scoped tasks and human oversight.

What manufacturers expect MCP-connected AI to deliver

A 2026 Propel-commissioned survey of 400 senior professionals in high tech and electronics, industrial equipment, and medical devices asked about expected benefits from MCP-connected AI. Respondents most often selected improved employee productivity, faster decision-making and faster product development.

Expected benefit Respondents selecting it What the figure represents
Improved employee productivity 35% Expectation reported in the Propel/Talker Research survey; not a measured productivity increase.
Faster decision-making 34% Expectation reported in the Propel/Talker Research survey; not a measured reduction in decision time.
Faster product development 31% Expectation reported in the Propel/Talker Research survey; not a measured shortening of development cycles.

The survey announcement does not establish that MCP itself caused these outcomes. Propel sells a PLM/PVM platform with MCP capabilities, and the cited announcement does not fully specify the survey’s sampling frame, geography or questionnaire. Treat the percentages as a snapshot of the surveyed professionals’ views, not as representative of every manufacturer. Propel’s survey announcement provides the reported figures and respondent context.

What MCP does in manufacturing workflows

The Model Context Protocol is an integration protocol that lets AI clients or agents connect with tools and enterprise data. In the manufacturing examples described by Propel and Microsoft, the protocol provides a route into systems such as product lifecycle management (PLM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP). The value depends on what the connected system exposes, what the agent is permitted to do, and whether the underlying records are accurate and current.

Connecting AI to live product records

Propel said in June 2026 that its PLM platform had production MCP connectivity. Its description says external AI clients can query live product records and perform simple operations, while Propel can connect to external MCP servers for supplier intelligence, component information and ERP records. This is a vendor description of its own product, not a comparative assessment of MCP platforms. Propel’s MCP product announcement describes the implementation. Tech-Clarity president and founder Jim Brown said in that announcement that AI tools need to work with trusted, accurate product data wherever they are used.

Connecting agents to ERP finance workflows

Microsoft’s September 2026 customer story describes Pamarco using Copilot Studio agents connected to Dynamics 365 through the Dynamics 365 ERP MCP Server. Pamarco began with bounded finance work including close-task coordination, invoice coding, report preparation and recurring analysis. The company describes defined agent scopes and permissions, with human owners retaining responsibility for work that requires judgment or review. Microsoft’s Pamarco customer story is a vendor-published account, not an independent evaluation.

Use cases differ by role and task

The Propel survey announcement reports different perceived benefits across functions. These are respondents’ assessments of potential value, not verified results from deployed MCP systems.

  • Product management: respondents valued a consolidated view across product, customer, competitive and quality information.
  • IT: 95% of IT respondents rated secure connections between approved AI tools and PLM/QMS—with access controls and audit logging—as extremely or somewhat valuable. Some 86% valued replacing point-to-point integrations with a standardized MCP interface, and 84% valued centralized governance over what AI can access and do.
  • Marketing: 85% of marketing respondents rated AI assistance that combines engineering, quality and product details for launch materials as extremely or somewhat valuable, particularly when specifications change late in development.

A separate Propel executive survey announcement reported that 91% saw increased organizational interest in MCP, with 63% describing the interest as dramatic or significant. More than 90% said they had implemented or expected to implement MCP within 12 months; that combines completed implementations with future intentions and is not an adoption rate. In that survey, 49% ranked PLM as the top business system for AI agents to access through MCP, while 38% ranked PLM as the most valuable information source for AI actions. These are survey responses, not audited deployment statistics. Propel’s executive survey announcement reports those measures.

What the Pamarco example shows—and does not show

Pamarco’s account offers a concrete example of a bounded agent workflow, but the results remain company-reported and should not be treated as general benchmarks. Pamarco estimates its agents automate up to 40% of financial close tasks. Microsoft says fewer than 5% of invoices needed manual coding during validation, while Pamarco reports freight coding success of around 95%. These figures describe different measures and should not be compared as if they measured the same outcome.

Pamarco CIO Glyn Wilson said the company sees the agents as a way for employees to skip repetitive tasks and focus on work better suited to people, rather than as a headcount-reduction effort. Wilson also said the company saw potential to reach 50% to 60% of financial close tasks by year-end; that was a forward-looking estimate, not a confirmed later result. The customer story says Pamarco may consider sales, quoting, order entry, customer responses and vendor communications in the future. Those are plans, not completed deployments.

What manufacturers should evaluate before connecting agents

MCP creates a standardized connection path; it does not by itself make an agent’s answers correct or its actions safe. Propel CEO Ross Meyercord warned in the survey announcement that fragmented, outdated or siloed product records can lead AI to bad answers. The practical implication is that data readiness and governance matter alongside protocol support.

  • Data quality and freshness: identify the authoritative product and business records, and how changes reach the systems agents query.
  • Permissions: define which systems and records an agent can read, and which actions it can take. Start with narrow task scopes.
  • Auditability: retain logs that show what the agent accessed and did, particularly for regulated or consequential workflows.
  • Human accountability: specify when a person must review, approve or take over work involving judgment.
  • Outcome measurement: establish a baseline for time, error rates and exception handling before claiming productivity gains. Separate estimated automation, validation results and sustained operating outcomes.

The available accounts do not provide a controlled comparison of MCP vendors or protocols, nor do they establish that results from one manufacturer will transfer to another. The strongest evidence here is therefore a combination of executive expectations, vendor-described product capability and a named customer’s reported use—not proof of universal productivity improvements.
