The Mantis Stand was a premium aluminum holder designed for the original iPad and iPad 2. Its useful swivel, tilt and retractable retaining arms drew praise, but period articles disagree on its price, and one reviewer reported slight corner damage after putting an iPad 1 in the iPad 2 version. That report is a specific model-mismatch anecdote, not proof that the stand generally damaged iPads. Current availability, price and compatibility with newer iPads have not been established.
What was the Mantis Stand for iPad?
Made by U.K.-based Flatscreen Arms, the Mantis was a solid-aluminum stand with an anodized finish. New Atlas described a swiveling, tilting head, adjustable head tension and retractable arms operated by a cam lever. A security screw helped secure the holder. Together, these features let users position a tablet in portrait or landscape orientation while the arms retained it. New Atlas’s 2011 product report said the stand fit the original iPad and iPad 2, with or without an Apple Smart Cover.
That compatibility statement is limited to those early models. It does not establish fit for later iPads, cases or accessories.
Was the Mantis Stand deadly to an iPad?
There is no evidence here of a general safety problem. In a February 2012 review, Elliot Jay Stocks said he had received the iPad 2 version and that it caused slight corner damage to his iPad 1. The reported damage followed a mismatch between stand version and tablet generation; the review does not establish that a correctly matched Mantis damaged iPads generally. Stocks’s review also praised the stand’s balance and ease of adjustment.

Because the stand grips the tablet with retaining arms, the practical lesson is to verify the exact stand version and the tablet model before fitting one. The historical sources do not provide a compatibility chart for later iPads or cases, so do not assume a fit based on appearance alone.
How much did it cost, and was it worth it?
Two period articles give different prices; neither establishes a current price. New Atlas reported £149.99 (US$233) in 2011, while Stocks listed £99.99 in his 2012 review. The sources do not explain the difference, so neither figure should be treated as definitive. New Atlas’s James Holloway called it “undeniably pricey for an, albeit elegant, iPad stand.” Stocks also considered £99.99 expensive, though he felt the material and craftsmanship helped justify it.

Stocks described the stand as “sturdy as hell” and praised rotating it between portrait and landscape and adjusting its tilt. He recounted using it at a kitchen worktop and for breakfast reading; those are personal impressions, not controlled tests. They suggest the Mantis’s appeal was a stable, adjustable everyday position rather than portability or low cost. The sources do not give measured weight, dimensions or a comparative stability test.
Can you buy one now or use it with a newer iPad?
Current stock, price and compatibility with iPads released after the original iPad and iPad 2 are unverified. The 2011 article named RingO, dzdock, Yogi, TabGrip and LUXA2 H4 as cheaper alternatives at the time, but that historical list does not establish that those products are still sold or fit current iPads. Before buying a used Mantis, confirm the exact generation of the stand, the tablet model and any case fit with the seller; do not rely on a generic listing or the old compatibility claim.

Verdict
The Mantis offered thoughtful adjustment and sturdy construction for two early iPad generations, but its high and inconsistently reported period price makes value a matter of preference. Stocks’s corner-damage report warrants care about matching the stand version to the tablet, not a blanket warning that the product was dangerous. With no verified current stock, pricing or newer-iPad compatibility, it is best understood as a historical accessory rather than a confirmed choice for a present-day iPad.
