Yes, some phosphorus compounds can be made without first producing white phosphorus. Michael B. Geeson and Christopher C. Cummins demonstrated a route that starts with phosphoric acid or a dehydrated phosphate such as trimetaphosphate. Trichlorosilane reduces the phosphate to a previously unreported bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide anion, which can then be converted into phosphorus–hydrogen, phosphorus–fluorine and phosphorus–carbon products.

The result is a credible alternative pathway, not a proven industrial replacement. The work avoids the white-phosphorus step and elemental chlorine in the demonstrated sequence, but it still depends on trichlorosilane, whose manufacture has a substantial energy demand. The experiments were reported at gram scale, so questions about continuous processing, reagent recycling, waste treatment, economics and plant safety remain open.

What the alternative pathway changes

Most non-fertilizer phosphorus chemicals are traditionally connected to P4, the molecular form known as white phosphorus. The new route changes the point at which phosphate becomes chemically useful. Instead of reducing phosphate all the way to elemental phosphorus and then rebuilding phosphorus compounds, it creates a reactive phosphorus anion while phosphorus remains bonded to silicon.

In the demonstrated sequence, phosphoric acid or trimetaphosphate is treated with trichlorosilane, written HSiCl3. Reduction produces the bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide anion. Researchers either isolated that species as a tetrabutylammonium salt or generated it in the reaction mixture and used it immediately. The silicon-containing intermediate is therefore a platform: its bonds can be exchanged or hydrolyzed to make several useful classes of phosphorus compounds.

This is a different strategy from claiming that phosphoric acid can simply be poured into a reactor and converted directly into every organophosphorus product. Each target still needs its own reaction conditions and purification. What the work demonstrates is that a common phosphate feedstock can reach those downstream reactions without passing through a bulk batch of white phosphorus.

Why white phosphorus is the conventional bottleneck

Thermal reduction of phosphate rock

Commercial white phosphorus is made by a high-temperature reduction of phosphate material in an electric arc furnace. The thermal process operates at about 1,500 °C. A simplified description is that phosphate is reduced in the presence of carbon and silica, producing phosphorus vapor that is condensed and handled under water or another oxygen-excluding environment.

A 2024 United States patent, US11993623B2, gives an energy figure of approximately 13.5 kWh for each kilogram of P4. Chemistry World reported in 2018 that only about 2% of mined phosphorus rock is reduced to make roughly one million tonnes of white phosphorus per year. The figures describe the scale and intensity of the thermal route; they are not a current, independently audited global production census.

Most phosphate follows a different route

About 95% of phosphate rock mined annually goes through the wet process rather than thermal reduction, according to US11993623B2. In that process, phosphate rock is reacted with acid to make phosphoric acid for fertilizers and related products. The alternative chemistry is attractive because it asks whether this existing, widely used phosphate stream can also supply specialty phosphorus chemicals.

Why handling P4 is difficult

White phosphorus is toxic and pyrophoric: it can ignite in air and must be kept away from oxygen during storage and transfer. A plant that makes it must therefore combine an extreme-temperature furnace with systems for vapor condensation, fire prevention, containment and controlled conversion into safer intermediates. Avoiding the elemental-phosphorus inventory could reduce one major hazard, even though it does not make the replacement chemistry hazard-free.

How the phosphate-to-phosphorus route works

The chemistry can be understood as four linked operations. The exact stoichiometry, solvent choices and work-up depend on the desired product, so the outline below is a process map rather than a laboratory recipe.

  1. Choose a phosphate feedstock. The reported starting materials are phosphoric acid and dehydrated phosphate, including trimetaphosphate. These represent forms of phosphorus already present in wet-process or deliberately dehydrated phosphate streams.
  2. Reduce phosphorus with trichlorosilane. Trichlorosilane supplies the reducing environment that converts phosphate phosphorus into a lower-oxidation-state phosphide. Silicon and chlorine become part of the protecting and activating framework around phosphorus rather than phosphorus being released as elemental P4.
  3. Form the bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide anion. The key species carries a phosphorus center bonded to two trichlorosilyl groups and a negative charge. It can be isolated as a tetrabutylammonium salt or made in situ, which matters because avoiding isolation could simplify a future continuous or one-pot process.
  4. Transform the P–Si bonds. Hydrolysis gives P–H chemistry, fluorination gives P–F chemistry, and reactions with carbon electrophiles give P–C chemistry. The product determines whether the intermediate is quenched, fluorinated, alkylated or combined with a metal-containing reagent.

The central conceptual advance is the P–Si bonded intermediate. Cummins told Chemistry World in 2018, “To our knowledge, [the silylphosphide] has never been described before.” That novelty is important because it supplies a controllable chemical handle between abundant phosphate and a range of molecular phosphorus products.

Products demonstrated or enabled by the chemistry

Phosphine from hydrolysis

Hydrolysis of the intermediate produces phosphine, PH3. The Science paper reported at least 65% yield by quantitative 31P NMR. This is a measured result for the reported reaction, not a claim that every phosphate feedstock or scale will give the same yield.

Phosphine is an important intermediate for phosphorus chemistry, but it is also highly hazardous and would require closed equipment, gas monitoring and a plan for capture or conversion. Thus, making phosphine without P4 removes one upstream step; it does not remove the need for stringent process safety.

Hexafluorophosphate for battery electrolytes

Reaction with xenon difluoride converts the phosphorus intermediate into lithium hexafluorophosphate, LiPF6, in 70% isolated yield in the reported work. LiPF6 is widely used as a lithium-ion battery electrolyte salt because it combines useful conductivity and compatibility with common carbonate electrolytes, although its manufacture, stability and handling are separate engineering issues.

The result shows why avoiding P4 could matter beyond commodity phosphorus chemicals. A phosphate feedstock can, in principle, be connected to a battery-material supply chain through a molecular intermediate rather than through elemental phosphorus. The experiment itself does not establish battery-grade purity, long-term electrolyte performance or a lower cost at plant scale.

Alkylphosphines and other P–C products

Alkyl chlorides can react with the phosphide chemistry to form alkylphosphines. The patent also describes one-pot versions that generate and consume the intermediate without isolating its salt. One-pot processing can reduce transfers and solvent exchanges, but it also places more demanding control requirements on heat release, mixing, gas evolution and impurity management.

The paper and related patent discuss broader applications for P–C, P–H and P–F chemistry, including metal phosphides, quantum-dot precursors and a route toward a phosphinic-acid intermediate used in fosinopril synthesis. These examples indicate product breadth; they should not be read as proof that all of those materials have been produced at commercial specification by the new process.

Comparison with the white-phosphorus route

Criterion Conventional pathway Phosphate-to-silylphosphide pathway
Primary phosphorus feed Phosphate rock is thermally reduced to P4. Phosphoric acid or dehydrated phosphate such as trimetaphosphate.
Key phosphorus intermediate White phosphorus, P4. Bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide anion, isolated or generated in situ.
Reported temperature context About 1,500 °C in the electric-arc thermal process. Patent examples process material at roughly 70–150 °C in a sealed vessel; these are gram-scale demonstrations.
Energy figure available Approximately 13.5 kWh per kilogram of P4, reported in US11993623B2. No complete commercial energy balance has been established.
Elemental chlorine in the demonstrated sequence Conventional downstream phosphorus chemistry can involve chlorine-based reagents and intermediates. The reported sequence avoids elemental chlorine; trichlorosilane still contains chlorine and creates silicon-containing by-products.
Hazard profile White phosphorus is toxic and pyrophoric; production also involves an extreme-temperature furnace. No P4 inventory is required in the demonstrated sequence, but trichlorosilane, phosphine, fluorinating reagents and sealed-vessel operation require industrial controls.
Products shown Broad, established industrial product families downstream of P4. Phosphine at at least 65% by quantitative 31P NMR; LiPF6 at 70% isolated yield; alkylphosphines and additional transformations demonstrated or described.
Readiness Established industrial technology. Research-stage chemistry with gram-scale and patent demonstrations; no commercial plant is established by the available sources.

The sustainability trade-off: trichlorosilane is not free

The strongest criticism of the alternative route is also the most important qualification. Willem Schipper, a phosphorus-chemicals consultant quoted by Chemistry World, noted that trichlorosilane is made through elemental silicon in a process with nearly the same energy use as phosphorus production. In other words, the new chemistry may shift part of the energy burden from phosphorus reduction to silicon and chlorosilane production rather than eliminate it.

A fair comparison therefore needs a full life-cycle and process balance, not just the furnace temperature in the phosphorus reactor. It would need to count:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • electricity and fuel used to make elemental silicon and then trichlorosilane;
  • energy for phosphate dehydration, solvent circulation, heating and pressure control;
  • the fate of silicon- and chlorine-containing coproducts;
  • reagent recovery, especially whether excess trichlorosilane can be recycled;
  • water, acid and waste-treatment requirements for the selected phosphate feed;
  • transport and storage differences caused by avoiding bulk white phosphorus; and
  • the purity and yield required for each final product.

Until those data are available for a defined plant boundary, it is accurate to call the route a potential hazard and supply-chain alternative, not automatically a low-energy or low-carbon process.

What scale-up would have to solve

Feedstock variability

Laboratory phosphoric acid and purified trimetaphosphate are more consistent than industrial phosphate streams. A commercial process would need to tolerate metals, sulfate, fluoride, organic matter and other impurities that can enter wet-process acid. The available reports do not establish how those contaminants affect conversion, selectivity or catalyst-free operation.

Closed handling and heat management

The patent reports gram-scale preparation and processing at approximately 70–150 °C in a sealed vessel. Moving from grams to tonnes changes mixing, heat removal, pressure relief and materials compatibility. A one-pot process could reduce intermediate isolation, but it would also combine reduction and product-forming reactions in the same equipment. Engineers would need validated relief scenarios and analytical monitoring for unreacted chlorosilane, phosphine and other volatile species.

Separations and by-products

The isolated tetrabutylammonium salt is useful for proving the chemistry, but a large plant may prefer in-situ generation to avoid salt isolation and disposal. That choice trades a solid-handling problem for a more complex liquid-phase separation. Silicon-containing residues and chloride-containing streams would need recovery, sale, neutralization or secure disposal. The available data does not provide a commercial flowsheet or a verified waste-cost estimate.

Product specifications

Specialty markets impose different purity requirements. Battery electrolyte salt may require control of trace metals, moisture and acid impurities. Phosphines and pharmaceutical intermediates require their own impurity profiles and stereochemical or analytical specifications. Demonstrating a reaction at 70% isolated yield is only one part of proving that a product can be made repeatedly to customer grade.

What the work means for major phosphorus markets

Battery materials

The LiPF6 result is the clearest connection to a large technology sector. If a phosphate-based route eventually met electrolyte-grade specifications, it could diversify the upstream supply chain for a key lithium-ion battery salt. That possibility depends on moisture control, fluorine-reagent economics, recycling and scale; the reported 70% isolated yield does not answer those questions.

Pharmaceutical and fine-chemical synthesis

Phosphine, alkylphosphines and phosphinic-acid intermediates are useful because phosphorus can alter molecular shape, binding and metabolic behavior. The reported route toward the phosphinic-acid intermediate used in fosinopril synthesis illustrates how a phosphate feed could enter medicinal-chemistry manufacturing. It is a route demonstration, not evidence that an approved medicine is currently made this way.

Agrochemicals, catalysts and materials

Organophosphorus compounds are used in agrochemicals and catalyst ligands, while metal phosphides and phosphorus-containing quantum-dot precursors serve materials research and electronics-related applications. The new intermediate provides P–C, P–H and P–F reactivity that could be adapted to these families. Whether it beats established P4-based supply chains will depend on the target molecule, required volume and tolerance for silicon-containing waste.

The evidence does not establish a commercial substitute, a lower total energy footprint, a lower cost per kilogram, or a universally compatible replacement for every P4-derived product. The authors presented the method as a possible option if white-phosphorus production ceased, not as an already deployed industrial process.

Industrial context and next steps

The Science paper acknowledges a sustainable-development partnership involving Université Mohammed VI Polytechnic and MIT, along with discussions with OCP Group. Those links connect the research to phosphate-industry scale-up, but the available sources do not document a commercial plant, current production volumes or industrial deployment.

The most informative next demonstrations would be continuous operation, impurity-tolerant wet-process acid, recovery of silicon and chlorine streams, and an independently measured energy and emissions balance. Pilot runs should also report product purity, solvent and reagent recycle, corrosion behavior, emergency controls and the fate of phosphine or other hazardous intermediates. Without those data, the chemistry remains a promising bridge from phosphate to specialty compounds rather than a drop-in replacement for the established thermal route.

Bottom line for readers asking what replaces P4

What replaces white phosphorus in this approach is not a single new commodity chemical. It is a process sequence centered on the bis(trichlorosilyl)phosphide anion. Phosphate is reduced with trichlorosilane, and that intermediate is then converted into phosphine, hexafluorophosphate, alkylphosphines and other phosphorus compounds.

The route matters because it could use the much larger wet-process phosphate stream and avoid manufacturing and storing elemental phosphorus. Its limitation is equally clear: trichlorosilane production, hazardous downstream reagents and scale-up waste streams may carry substantial energy and safety costs. The chemistry is technically credible and unusually broad, but commercial replacement has not yet been demonstrated.
