Majordomo is legacy software for automating mailing-list administration: subscribers and administrators send commands by email, and Majordomo maintains list-related addresses and settings for a separate mail transport system. It is not itself the system that delivers messages. Its documented feature set includes moderation, configuration, archives and digests, but availability depends on the particular installation.
What Majordomo does—and what it does not do
The historical Majordomo FAQ, with a revision date of April 27, 1997, describes it as software that automates management of Internet mailing lists. In that architecture, Majordomo processes commands and maintains address information for a separate mail transport agent (MTA), such as sendmail or smail. The MTA handles delivery; Majordomo does not send list mail itself. The FAQ notes that Majordomo also includes scripts for tasks such as formatting and archiving messages.
The project README in the Distrotech Majordomo repository describes a modular Perl implementation with support for moderated lists, remotely editable configuration, archives, digests and FTPMAIL. This is a feature description of that project lineage, not a guarantee that a particular server has enabled every feature or that the software is appropriate for a modern deployment.
How subscribers use a Majordomo service
In the OpenBSD Mailing List Server’s Majordomo 2 overview, users interact with the service by emailing commands in the message body to its Majordomo address. The relevant address and command syntax are service-specific; the OpenBSD instructions are an example, not a universal endpoint or command list.

That service’s subscriber command help documents help, FAQ and retrieval operations. To find out how to subscribe or unsubscribe, use the instructions for the list you actually want to join, or request help from that service. Do not assume that commands shown for one Majordomo installation work on another.
Use plain-text commands when the service requires them
The University of Helsinki IT instructions document a service with both a browser-based interface, MajorCool, and email commands. Helsinki warns that its Majordomo service does not accept HTML-formatted command messages and instructs users to send plain text. Follow the rules of the relevant service; this guidance is documented for Helsinki, not established as universal across forks.

What administrators configure
List owners and system administrators may need to choose who can see a list, who can post, whether messages are moderated, and whether subscribers receive digests. Configuration may also cover bounce handling and subscriber reminders. OpenBSD’s administrator help says its installation documents more than 100 settings organized into categories. That count applies to the settings described by that service’s help, not to every Majordomo version.
Use the running server’s own administrator documentation to confirm the available options, permissions and policy. Settings, interfaces and access controls can differ between deployments, and a setting’s presence in help does not establish that it is enabled or suitable for a particular list.

Installation requirements and legacy cautions
The project’s README lists Perl and a C compiler among its requirements and points to an INSTALL file. Its historical technical FAQ describes compiling a C wrapper that runs setuid to establish permissions for Majordomo operations. These documents explain historical installation design; they are not a current security-hardening guide. Before installing or exposing an instance, check the exact fork or package documentation, compatibility with the MTA, and current security implications of its privilege model.
The README also cautions that its bundled installation material is dated. It describes the Jerry Peek chapter in Managing Internet Information Services as covering version 1.62 and being out of date, and says an older LISA paper is useful only as background rather than as an installation guide. Those references should not be treated as current setup instructions.

Is Majordomo still maintained?
The available project and historical documentation do not establish the latest original upstream release, whether the original project has an active maintainer, or whether it receives security fixes. Current support status is therefore unverified here; an old release reference or maintainer name cannot answer whether a deployment is maintained today.
For an existing service, verify who operates it, which fork or package is installed, what security-update process applies, and whether its MTA and authentication configuration remain compatible with current infrastructure. For a new deployment or migration decision, evaluate maintenance and release cadence, moderation and digest needs, bounce processing, administrator access controls, and the portability of subscriber data. No modern product comparison or adoption figures are established by the sources cited here.
