Choose MAI-Transcribe-2 when its documented file-transcription features fit your task and you can accept a public-preview service without an SLA. For production workloads that require a supported commitment, do not treat it as ready: Microsoft says the preview is not recommended for production. “Azure Speech to Text” is a broader service, not one competing model, so compare MAI-Transcribe-2 with the exact Azure transcription option you would deploy.
First, define the Azure option
MAI-Transcribe-2 is a specific Microsoft speech-to-text model, available through a Microsoft Foundry Speech resource and the Azure Speech API. Its documented workflow takes an audio file and selects the model through a REST API.
Azure Speech to Text, by contrast, describes a service capability with several transcription categories. Microsoft’s Azure pricing page distinguishes standard, fast, batch, LLM, and custom transcription. The right comparison depends on which category, model, and workflow you intend to use; the general service name alone is not specific enough to establish feature or price parity.

What MAI-Transcribe-2 offers for file transcription
Microsoft documents support for 60 languages, automatic language identification for multilingual recordings, speaker diarization, word-level timestamps, phrase-list keyword biasing, and clean or verbatim transcript styles. These are capabilities to evaluate against your use case, not guarantees that every accent, name, or speaker will be handled correctly.

- Language handling: The documented 60-language coverage and automatic identification may suit recordings that switch languages. Test your actual language, dialect, and code-switching patterns.
- Speaker attribution: Diarization can label who spoke when. Microsoft’s preview documentation warns of failures on recordings of about 15 minutes or longer when diarization is enabled. That is an approximate observed threshold, not a general maximum request duration. Microsoft suggests transcribing without diarization and applying a separate diarization step for longer recordings.
- Timing: Word timestamps can help with editing, search, or alignment tasks that need more precision than a transcript alone.
- Transcript style: Use verbatim output when fillers and false starts matter; clean output is intended for more readable text, such as captions or notes.
- Domain terms: Phrase-list keyword biasing lets you supply vocabulary such as product names and jargon. Treat it as a biasing aid, not a correctness guarantee.
Preview status is the main production decision
Microsoft Learn labels MAI-Transcribe-2 a public preview, says it is provided without a service-level agreement, and says it is not recommended for production workloads. That is the decisive caveat for teams that need a contractual service commitment or stable production offer: verify the status and terms of the exact Azure option you plan to use rather than assuming they match this preview model.
Check the intended region, supported request sizes, and deployment terms before building around either offer. Catalog availability and a feature list do not by themselves establish that a configuration is suitable for a production requirement.

Choose batch or streaming based on the interaction
Use MAI-Transcribe-2 for an upload-and-transcribe workflow
The documented MAI-Transcribe-2 workflow is file-based. It is the candidate to evaluate when users submit recordings and can wait for a transcript rather than needing words as they are spoken.
Use a streaming model when users need live results
MAI-Transcribe-2 itself should not be described as a real-time service. Microsoft documents a distinct MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming model for live continuous audio, returning incremental interim results and confirmed final segments. Its overview was last updated 2026-10-01 and also identifies it as preview. Microsoft describes integration through both the Realtime API and the Azure Speech SDK.

Compare cost using current account and region figures
Microsoft AI displayed an introductory MAI-Transcribe-2 rate of $0.10 per hour of audio on its product page when accessed 2026-10-03. Treat that as the introductory figure shown there, not a universal or guaranteed quote. Microsoft’s Azure pricing page showed placeholders rather than numeric prices for relevant transcription rows at the time checked, so it does not support a reliable numeric head-to-head comparison.
Microsoft states that speech-to-text is billed in one-second increments. Before estimating spend, check current pricing for the intended region, category, and account in Azure; include any separate diarization step and the cost of integrating the selected workflow. A displayed model-page rate and an Azure account’s effective price may not answer the same cost question.

There is no established universal accuracy winner
The available evidence does not establish that MAI-Transcribe-2 beats every Azure Speech option, or vice versa, on a team’s audio. Microsoft AI reports FLEURS results across 60 languages and a number-two Artificial Analysis accuracy leaderboard position, but the page has a version-label inconsistency: one performance statement names “MAI-Transcribe-2.1,” while the title and comparison section say “MAI-Transcribe-2.” Those vendor-reported figures should not be treated as a clean direct comparison with every Azure mode.
For a meaningful decision, evaluate both candidates on the same representative recordings and the exact configuration you would deploy. Compare overall word error rate, errors in names and domain vocabulary, speaker attribution, timestamps if you depend on them, latency, and total billed cost. Include clean and noisy audio, relevant accents and languages, overlapping speech, and code-switching where those conditions occur in your real workload.

A practical selection checklist
- Name the Azure comparator. Choose the exact transcription category or model rather than using “Azure Speech to Text” as if it were one model.
- Confirm deployment fit. Check preview or production status, SLA, region, supported request sizes, and terms for the exact configuration.
- Match the workflow. Decide whether you need file-based transcription or live partial results; evaluate MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming separately for the latter.
- Test the hard cases. Use recordings that reflect real noise, accents, language switching, overlap, specialist vocabulary, and speaker patterns.
- Score downstream usefulness. Measure word errors alongside named-entity accuracy, diarization quality, and timestamp quality where relevant.
- Verify total cost. Use current region- and account-specific pricing, and account for separate processing steps rather than relying on an introductory model-page rate alone.
