On April 21, 2021, the Linux Foundation announced that Magma’s collaboration with the Open Infrastructure Foundation and OpenAirInterface Software Alliance had formally become the Magma Core Foundation. The announcement also named 11 new member organizations and set out a neutral governance structure that included a Technical Steering Committee (TSC). This is a historical account of that announcement, not confirmation of the project’s present membership or governance.
What changed with the Magma Core Foundation
The Linux Foundation described Magma as an open-source mobile-core platform for network operators. In its April 21, 2021 announcement, it said the collaboration involving the Open Infrastructure Foundation and OpenAirInterface Software Alliance had formally become the Magma Core Foundation after Magma moved to the Linux Foundation.
The release framed the foundation as a way to support cross-community collaboration and end-to-end telecom solutions. Irfan Ghauri, director of operations at the OpenAirInterface Software Alliance, noted that “The seed code for one of the main components of the Magma core (MME) is in fact OAI.” That is an attributed statement in the announcement, rather than an independent technical assessment.
Which organizations joined in 2021
The Linux Foundation identified these 11 organizations as new Magma members in its 2021 announcement:
#1 Best Overall
- 0chain
- Aarna Networks
- Connect5G
- FreedomFi
- GenXComm
- Helium
- Highway9Networks
- MotoJeannie
- Shoelace Wireless
- Vapor IO
- Whitestack
The release also named Arm, Deutsche Telekom, and Facebook as examples of existing members at that time. These lists describe the announcement’s 2021 membership, not a verified current roster.
What Magma’s roadmap covered
The release characterized Magma as an “open, flexible and extendable mobile core network solution.” It described a roadmap intended to work across 3GPP generations and with cellular or Wi-Fi access, rather than being tied to one generation or access type. The announcement also said the platform could support a radio access network with what it called minimal development and deployment effort; it did not provide an independently tested result or a detailed compatibility matrix.

The three major architecture components named in the announcement were:
- Access Gateway: One of the named elements of Magma’s mobile-core architecture.
- Orchestrator: A second named architecture component.
- Federation Gateway: The third named component.
The announcement did not include detailed implementation specifications or performance benchmarks for these components, so its architectural overview should not be read as a deployment guide or proof of interoperability in a particular network.

Open governance and the Technical Steering Committee
The Linux Foundation described the new governance model as neutral and cross-community, and announced five newly elected Technical Steering Committee members: Marie Bremner, Raphael Defosseus, Hunter Gatewood, Scott Moeller, and Pravin Shelar. The release records their election in 2021; it does not establish whether they or the same governance arrangements remain in place today.
Arpit Joshipura, the Linux Foundation’s general manager for Networking, Edge, and IoT, said, “We are pleased to see the Magma Core Foundation continue to evolve as a leader in network innovation.” This is a stakeholder comment within the announcement, not evidence of independently measured project outcomes.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish today
The source is the Linux Foundation’s April 21, 2021 announcement. It establishes what the Foundation said about Magma’s foundation, membership, roadmap, and governance on that date. It does not establish the current foundation or project status, present-day membership, continuing TSC roles, deployment results, or adoption levels.
The release also announced a virtual Magma Day for May 3, 2021, from 2:30 to 6:00 p.m. CEST, co-located with KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2021. That event date has passed.
