For Windows, compare the Dell XPS 13 (2026) if portability matters, or the ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 if you need a non-student-priced option around $600. For ChromeOS, consider the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024), but its cited $700 base MSRP means it fits a sub-$600 budget only when discounted. If you want macOS, the Neo itself remains the relevant baseline.
What you get with the MacBook Neo
Apple announced the MacBook Neo in March 2026. Its cited base configuration has an A18 Pro chip, 8GB of unified memory, a 256GB SSD, and a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with 2408-by-1506 resolution and 500-nit brightness. It has two USB-C ports with different USB speeds; external display support is on the USB 3 port. Color options are Silver, Blush, Citrus, and Indigo. Configuration and pricing can vary by region, so check Apple’s current store before comparing offers. Apple’s March 2026 announcement
RTINGS describes the Neo as suited to browsing, streaming, word processing, schoolwork, and very light creative work. Its fixed 8GB of memory can be adequate for typical school tasks and light multitasking on macOS, but it is not a strong fit for intensive workloads. RTINGS also cautions that 8GB can constrain heavier multitasking on Windows 11; memory capacity alone does not guarantee equivalent headroom across operating systems. RTINGS MacBook Neo review
Which MacBook Neo alternative fits your needs?
| Your priority | Laptop to compare | What the cited coverage says | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable Windows laptop | Dell XPS 13 (2026) | RTINGS lists it as a Windows alternative around $599 with eligible student pricing and describes it as portable with strong battery life. | The price depends on student eligibility and the configuration. Check the current offer. |
| Windows without student eligibility | ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 | RTINGS calls it a top under-$600 pick and cites a $599 price that does not require special pricing. | That is a dated reference price, not a guaranteed live offer. Compare the exact configuration, screen, and portability. |
| ChromeOS | Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024) | RTINGS names it a Chromebook pick and notes a compact design, day-long battery, FHD+ display, and 1440p webcam. | RTINGS cites a $700 base MSRP, so it is not reliably under $600 at list price; look for an actual sale. |
| New 14-inch OLED Windows laptop | HP OmniBook 5 (14-inch, 2026) | Tom’s Hardware reports a $699.99 starting price and 14-inch 1920-by-1200 OLED configurations. | The report says some configurations were planned for November 2026 or March 2027. Confirm that the configuration you want has shipped. |
Prices above are source-attributed reference points, not current checkout quotes. RTINGS lists the ASUS at $599 and the Acer’s base MSRP at $700 in its 2026 coverage; Tom’s Hardware reports the HP starting at $699.99 in 2026. How to choose between the alternatives
- Check the operating system and required apps. Decide whether your workflow needs macOS, Windows, or ChromeOS. A Windows-only program or a school’s ChromeOS management requirements may matter more than a general review pick.
- Compare the price you can actually pay. Check the specific listing and whether you qualify for education pricing. Treat a temporary sale, student offer, and regular price as different things.
- Inspect the exact memory and storage configuration. The Neo baseline above has 8GB memory and a 256GB SSD. Other laptops may be sold in multiple configurations, so confirm the listing rather than relying on a model name. Consider how many applications and browser tabs you keep open and how much local storage you need.
- Match the machine to the work. For documents, browsing, video, and ordinary school tasks, multiple options may be suitable. Frequent video editing, development, or heavy multitasking calls for a more capable configuration; expect that to affect price.
- Compare the parts you use every day. Check display size and resolution, ports, keyboard, webcam, portability, and battery evidence for the exact configuration. Battery claims from manufacturers use particular test conditions, so they are not directly interchangeable.
What benchmark figures can—and cannot—tell you
Tom’s Guide reports SSD read/write results for the particular systems it tested: 1,585/1,440 MB/s for the MacBook Neo, 3,018/3,456 MB/s for the Dell, and 6,701/6,891 MB/s for the ASUS. These are configuration-specific measurements, most relevant to large file transfers; they are not a complete measure of laptop quality or a universal ranking. Tom’s Guide comparison
Apple’s performance comparisons used preproduction Neo systems and production Intel Core Ultra 5-based PCs in January and February 2026, with specific software and system configurations. Its battery tests used preproduction systems in January 2026 under controlled brightness and usage conditions. Those are Apple’s results, not independent tests; battery life varies with use and configuration. Apple MacBook Neo

Practical picks by buyer
Choose the Dell XPS 13 if Windows and portability come first
RTINGS’ cited guide points to the Dell XPS 13 (2026) for Windows shoppers and describes it as portable with strong battery life. The approximately $599 figure is tied to eligible student pricing, so check whether you qualify and verify the configuration and current offer.
Choose the ASUS Vivobook 16 if you need a regular-price Windows option near $600
RTINGS lists the ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 at $599 as a pick that does not require student pricing. Treat that as a dated reference rather than a live quote. A 16-inch model may make more sense if you value a larger screen over the Neo’s smaller form factor; compare the exact specifications and dimensions before deciding.

Choose the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 when ChromeOS is the point
RTINGS highlights its compact design, day-long battery, FHD+ display, and 1440p webcam. Its cited $700 base MSRP is above a $600 ceiling, so it is a candidate only if a current discount brings the configuration you want within budget.
Consider the HP OmniBook 5 if you want a newer OLED Windows option
Tom’s Hardware reports a 14-inch 1920-by-1200 OLED and a $699.99 starting price. That puts it above the Neo’s historic U.S. launch-price tier, and the report included future-dated configuration plans. Check actual shipping status and configuration availability before treating it as an option you can buy now.
