YouTube specifies encoder and stream settings, while OBS says performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; basic compatibility does not guarantee a successful stream. Choose memory for the apps and scenes you will run, and storage for recordings and media you will keep—not simply because the stream runs continuously.
What the official requirements do—and do not—say
YouTube’s live encoder guidance sets output requirements such as codec, bitrate, keyframe interval and constant bitrate (CBR). It does not prescribe how much RAM or internal storage a Mac mini must have. OBS likewise does not publish a universal RAM target for this workload: it lists Intel or Apple Silicon and macOS 11 or later for macOS, but warns that meeting basic requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record successfully. CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. YouTube’s encoder settings and OBS’s system requirements are guidance for different parts of the setup, not a Mac mini memory or storage minimum.
In practice, a simple OBS scene with few sources is a different workload from one using animated overlays, browser sources, capture devices, local recording, editing software and many other open apps. Treat extra memory as headroom for your actual workload, not as a YouTube-mandated requirement.
Mac mini configurations to consider
Apple’s configurations describe what can be purchased, not what YouTube requires. The current lineup page describes M6 and M5 Pro models; the separate 2024 page covers M4 and M4 Pro. Check the specification for the exact generation you are buying, since capacities differ.

| Model tier | Unified memory | Internal SSD | What that means for streaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current M6 tier (Apple’s 2026 lineup) | 16GB starting configuration; configurable to 24GB or 32GB | 256GB starting configuration; configurable to 512GB, 1TB or 2TB | A starting point to assess against your OBS scene, other open apps and any local recording. These capacities are not official streaming minimums. |
| Current M5 Pro tier (Apple’s 2026 lineup) | 24GB starting configuration; options up to 48GB or 64GB | 512GB starting configuration; options up to 8TB | More configuration headroom is available; choose it for workload or storage needs rather than an assumed YouTube requirement. |
| 2024 M4 | 16GB starting configuration; options to 24GB or 32GB | 256GB starting configuration, with larger options | Use the 2024 specification when evaluating this generation rather than assuming newer base capacities. |
| 2024 M4 Pro | 24GB starting configuration | 512GB starting configuration, with larger options | Apple lists hardware video encode engines for this model as well as the M4. |
Apple lists hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW encoding support for its current lineup, and hardware video encode engines for the M4 and M4 Pro. OBS documents Apple VideoToolbox support on Apple Silicon, including H.264 streaming. This establishes that hardware encoding is available; it does not prove a particular Mac mini can sustain a specific scene and stream indefinitely. Consult Apple’s current Mac mini specifications and, for the older generation, Apple’s 2024 Mac mini specifications. OBS describes its Apple encoding support at Hardware Encoding.
How much RAM should you choose?
Start with the software and scene you will actually keep running. The stream encoder is only part of the workload: OBS scenes, browser overlays, capture devices, other applications and simultaneous recording can all change what the machine must handle. No official source reviewed establishes a universal RAM figure for 24/7 use.

- Simple stream: If you plan to run OBS with a modest scene and few other apps, compare the base memory configuration for your Mac mini generation against that workload. Do not interpret compatibility as a performance guarantee.
- More complex production: If the scene contains multiple animated or browser-based sources, or you will record, edit or multitask at the same time, consider a higher memory configuration for headroom. This is a workload-based choice, not a published minimum.
- Validate the exact setup: Run the actual scenes, sources, audio and recording settings you intend to use. Watch OBS and YouTube stream health during a representative test, rather than assuming success from the Mac’s chip or RAM specification alone.
How much SSD storage do you need?
Sending a live stream to YouTube does not, by itself, establish a required amount of internal SSD space. Storage needs depend on whether you also record locally, how large your source files are and how long you retain them. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not set a local disk-capacity requirement.
- If you are not keeping local recordings: Choose internal storage for macOS, applications and the media you plan to store on the Mac. A larger SSD is not automatically necessary just to send the live stream.
- If you record locally: Estimate space from your actual recording bitrate and recording duration, then allow additional room for the operating system, apps and other media. Because recording settings and retention periods vary, there is no single useful capacity figure for everyone.
- If your media library or recordings are large: An external SSD can be considered for that storage workflow. It does not increase unified memory and is not a prerequisite for livestreaming.
Stream settings that shape the workload
Set the encoder profile for the output you intend to send, rather than treating a particular RAM amount as a substitute for correct stream settings. YouTube’s current guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 or AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Its H.264 examples recommend 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Those are YouTube encoder recommendations for the stated resolutions and frame rates, not memory requirements. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the full codec-specific recommendations.

YouTube also recommends testing with representative audio and motion before the stream and monitoring stream health while live. Use the test to check the full scene and workflow—including any local recording—not just whether OBS opens.
What 24/7 operation changes
A Mac mini configured to stream continuously is not the same as a configuration proven to remain online without interruption. Apple’s and OBS’s cited documentation does not guarantee continuous operation for a particular model, and it does not establish a tested full-time setup. Before relying on one, test your intended workload for a representative duration and plan for stable network access, power continuity and restart or recovery needs. Monitor stream health rather than assuming that a successful start means the stream will remain healthy.

Troubleshooting a Mac mini streaming setup
- OBS runs, but the stream is unstable: Basic system compatibility does not establish performance for your particular encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene. Test the actual configuration, simplify or adjust the workload if needed, and check YouTube stream health.
- Encoding or scene performance is poor: OBS says CPU requirements vary with encoder, output settings and scene complexity. Check the selected encoder and reduce unnecessary scene complexity or concurrent work, then test again.
- The stream reaches YouTube but output settings are wrong: Verify the ingest protocol, supported codec, resolution and frame rate, bitrate mode and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance. For the listed RTMP/RTMPS settings, YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
- The internal SSD fills up: Check whether local recordings or source media are consuming space. Recalculate storage using the recording bitrate, duration and retention you actually need; consider external storage for retained files if appropriate.
- The stream stops after a power or network interruption: A hardware specification does not guarantee uninterrupted service. Review power and network continuity and plan how you will detect and restart a stream if required.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to running OBS on a Mac mini: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded video streaming to YouTube, not going live from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo or start the free day.
