A Mac mini M4 can host OBS locally, while a VPS can host a software-generated stream remotely. Neither is automatically reliable for 24/7 broadcasting: the right choice depends on whether your specific encoder and network can sustain the stream, and how you will recover from failures. Choose the Mac mini when you need a local macOS production workflow; consider a VPS only after verifying its sustained encoding capacity, bandwidth limits, and recovery arrangements. For prerecorded videos that simply need to loop on YouTube, a cloud streaming service is another option.

Mac mini M4 or VPS: what actually differs?

This is an operations decision, not a proven performance contest. The available specifications and guidance do not establish that a particular Mac mini M4 OBS setup or any unspecified VPS can run your stream continuously. Compare the real workload and the failure points you can manage.

Factor Mac mini M4 running OBS VPS running streaming software
Where it runs On hardware you own, at your location. On a remote server; capacity and limits depend on the specific plan.
Costs to compare Initial hardware purchase, local electricity, and internet service. Recurring hosting fees and any usage or outbound-transfer charges. No provider-specific VPS price was established here.
Network dependency Your home or office upload connection must remain suitable and stable. The server’s network and the plan’s outbound bandwidth and transfer limits matter.
Administration Local macOS and OBS graphical workflow. Remote access and the operating system and software supported by the provider.
Best-fit workflow Potentially useful when the production depends on local capture devices, camera input, or a local OBS scene. Potentially useful for a software-generated feed, provided the selected server can sustain it.

The workflow distinction is practical rather than a guarantee about any server: confirm the VPS can run your chosen encoder at your required settings before paying for it.

Can a Mac mini M4 run OBS 24/7?

OBS lists Apple Silicon as supported on macOS 11 or later, but compatibility is not a capacity guarantee. OBS Project states, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect the load. See the OBS Studio system requirements.

Apple lists 4 W idle and 65 W maximum power consumption, and 14 BTU/h idle and 222 BTU/h maximum thermal output, for its 2024 Mac mini M4 configuration with 16 GB unified memory and a 256 GB SSD. These are manufacturer figures for that configuration, not a measurement of OBS encoding or continuous-stream power use. Do not treat the maximum figure as the expected draw for your stream. Apple’s figures are on its power consumption and thermal output page and Mac mini specifications.

There is no independent 24/7 OBS test established here for this configuration. Before relying on it, test the exact scene, encoder, resolution, frame rate, and audio you intend to use, and plan for local power, internet, and software interruptions.

When can a VPS handle a 24/7 livestream?

A VPS is only a candidate if its actual plan can sustain your encoder workload and stream output. “VPS” alone says nothing about available encoding performance, outbound bandwidth, usage caps, regional network reliability, support, or automatic recovery. No vendor-level benchmark or provider comparison is established here, so a VPS cannot be called cheaper, faster, or more reliable in general.

Check the plan before paying

  • Confirm sustained encoding capacity for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and scenes you will use—not just a short burst or advertised CPU count.
  • Check outbound bandwidth, transfer allowances, and any overage or usage limits against the stream you plan to send.
  • Verify supported operating system and streaming software, how you will administer it remotely, and whether your workflow requires local capture hardware that the server cannot access.
  • Establish what happens after an encoder crash, server restart, network interruption, or lost remote session; do not assume recovery is automatic.
  • Compare recurring hosting charges with local hardware, electricity, and internet costs using the actual offers available to you.

Set stream requirements before choosing either host

Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate first. YouTube’s encoder guide recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and RTMP or RTMPS settings. For H.264, its recommended bitrate is 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Requirements change with the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec; use YouTube’s current encoder settings guide for the configuration you intend to send. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

Your available upload capacity must accommodate the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and warns that connection disruption can break a stream. That makes stable connectivity and a tested recovery plan as important as encoder capability. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance.

How to test your setup before relying on it

  1. Choose the actual output settings. Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval for the intended broadcast. For H.264, consult YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your exact output rather than assuming the 1080p figures apply to other settings.
  2. Confirm the host can sustain that workload. On a Mac, test the actual OBS scene on the intended macOS and encoder setup. On a VPS, verify the plan’s sustained encoding ability and applicable limits before purchase.
  3. Check the outbound connection. Confirm the upload path has the bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Consider both sustained capacity and the possibility of interruptions.
  4. Run a representative test. Use representative audio and motion, inspect YouTube’s preview, and monitor stream health. A static or brief test may not reveal problems in a more complex or longer-running workload.
  5. Exercise recovery. Decide how you will restart the encoder or host after a failure. Where appropriate, test backup-encoder failover rather than assuming it will work.

YouTube transcodes live streams into viewer output formats, but that does not fix an incorrectly configured or unstable ingest stream. YouTube describes encoder-based streaming as suitable for screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video hardware, and advanced production; it separately names a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded-video streams. That adjacent use case does not mean every 24/7 stream should use a cloud service. See YouTube’s guidance on continuous live streams.

Common reliability problems and what to check

  • The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check upload capacity against the configured bitrate and recommended headroom, then inspect connection interruptions and YouTube stream health.
  • The encoder cannot keep up: Recheck encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A supported processor or server plan does not by itself prove sustained capacity.
  • The VPS stops sending after a restart: Verify the provider’s restart behavior and your own encoder recovery procedure; test failover if your setup uses it.
  • A stream works in a brief test but fails during the intended workload: Retest with representative motion and audio and monitor the actual production configuration before depending on it continuously.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your use case is prerecorded video looping on YouTube rather than a live camera or local OBS production, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the feed running without a computer or home connection staying on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based live capture. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
