That transformation comes with a high launch price, strict model matching, a compact keyboard layout, limited edge protection, and no wireless multi-device pairing. For occasional typing, drawing, video, or a rugged case, a cheaper keyboard case or separate Bluetooth keyboard is a better fit.

The palm rest is now aluminum rather than the all-fabric surface used on the earlier design. It gives the lower half a more rigid, laptop-like feel during long typing sessions. The machined aluminum hinge holds the iPad above the keyboard, leaving the tablet’s display visually “floating” and allowing the viewing angle to be adjusted without moving the base.

The hinge is still a cantilever design rather than a detachable kickstand. That keeps the footprint compact on a desk, but it does not turn the keyboard into a tablet-only stand; when you want to draw or read without keys underneath, you remove the iPad from the magnetic connection.
Fourteen-key function row
A new 14-key row sits above the letter keys. Dedicated controls cover screen brightness, volume, media playback, display lock, search, Do Not Disturb, dictation and related system actions. These shortcuts eliminate several trips into Control Center or Settings when the iPad is being used like a computer.
Backlit scissor keys
Apple specifies a scissor mechanism with 1 mm of key travel and backlighting. RTINGS rates the typing quality as good and the build quality as outstanding. The keys have the consistent, shallow response expected from a modern laptop, while the backlight helps in dim rooms.
The trade-off is size. This is a compact keyboard: it has no separate navigation cluster and no number pad, and the spacing is tighter than on a full-size desktop keyboard. Larger glass trackpad with haptic feedback

The extra room matters when selecting text, dragging spreadsheet cells, arranging windows or using two-finger scrolling. A larger surface also makes pointer control less cramped when the iPad is positioned farther away on a desk. Haptics make clicks feel uniform across the pad, including near the top edge, rather than making you hunt for a physical button.
Compatibility: match the exact iPad before you buy
Compatibility is the most important buying check because the magnets and dimensions changed. The 11-inch and 13-inch keyboards are separate products, and the keyboard must match the corresponding M4 or M5 iPad Pro size and generation.

Apple requires iPadOS 17.4 or later for the 2024 accessory. Check the model name in Settings > General > About, then select the matching size and generation rather than relying on a case listing that merely says “iPad Pro.” The new keyboard does not work with non-Pro iPads, and an older Magic Keyboard cannot be reused with an M4 iPad Pro.
How it feels for real work
Writing and editing documents
The rigid base, scissor keys and palm rest make sustained typing substantially more comfortable than typing on the iPad’s glass display. The floating screen keeps the document at a laptop-like height, and the function row gives immediate access to brightness, volume, search and dictation.
The compact layout is the main adjustment. If you move between a full-size keyboard and the iPad frequently, expect to use the number row and keyboard shortcuts more often because there is no dedicated navigation block. That is a limitation of the form factor rather than a software defect.

Spreadsheets and pointer work
Spreadsheet editing benefits most from the larger haptic trackpad. Selecting a range, dragging a fill handle, or moving between cells is easier when the pointer has more room. Multi-Touch gestures also make it practical to switch between apps and scroll through large sheets without reaching for the display.

For users who mostly enter numbers with a keypad, the absence of a numpad remains a reason to choose an external keyboard. The Magic Keyboard is optimized for portability and a unified case, not maximum desktop throughput.
Creative and touch-first work
The accessory does not replace the advantages of using the iPad as a tablet. Apple Pencil users may prefer to remove the iPad from the keyboard for a flat drawing position, and the keyboard adds weight when the device is carried solely for reading or sketching. The value is highest when pointer and keyboard input are part of the same session.
Charging and ports
A USB-C port on the hinge provides pass-through charging. Plug the charger into the keyboard rather than the iPad, and the iPad’s main USB-C port stays free for a display, storage device, audio interface or other peripheral. This is particularly useful at a desk where charging and accessories are needed at the same time.
The pass-through connection is for charging; no additional data-port function is specified. The keyboard connects through the iPad’s magnetic interface, so there is no Bluetooth pairing process to manage.

Portability, protection and viewing angles
Measured weight of the 13-inch model
Apple does not publish an official accessory weight for the 13-inch keyboard. Independent 2024 reviews measured individual units at about 667 g (9to5Mac), 662 g (another 9to5Mac measurement) and 658 g (The Verge). Those are review measurements, not a guaranteed factory specification. The same reporting put the previous 13-inch Magic Keyboard at about 710 g, so the new version is lighter in those comparisons despite its aluminum palm rest.
Because the keyboard is fitted to the iPad, carrying the combined device still feels more substantial than carrying the tablet alone. The benefit is that the case, stand, keyboard and trackpad travel as one piece rather than as separate accessories.
Protection level
The cover protects the iPad’s front and back while it is closed. The edges are not enclosed like they are with a rugged shell, however, so the keyboard is not the right choice for drops, construction sites or situations where corner protection is a priority. Its slim profile favors desks, bags and briefcases over heavy-duty protection.
Viewing-angle flexibility
The cantilever hinge lets you adjust the screen angle while the keyboard remains flat. That is more stable for pointer work than a kickstand on a soft surface, but the hinge does not provide the range of positions of a fully detachable stand. For drawing or hand-held reading, detach the iPad instead of forcing the keyboard into a tablet posture.
Price and value
MacRumors reported US launch prices on May 9, 2024, of $299 for the 11-inch model and $349 for the 13-inch model. These are launch MSRP figures, not current prices; retailer discounts and availability change, so check the seller at the time of purchase.

The premium makes sense when the keyboard is used daily. One accessory supplies a fitted case, adjustable stand, keyboard and trackpad, and it preserves the iPad’s main USB-C port while charging. Buying separate equivalents can mean more pieces, more desk space and less reliable alignment.
The calculation changes for occasional typing. A less expensive keyboard case or a standalone Bluetooth keyboard can cover email and short documents without locking you into a size-specific accessory. The Magic Keyboard also cannot pair wirelessly with multiple devices, so it is not a convenient shared keyboard for an iPad, Mac and phone.

The practical difference is not merely cosmetic. The trackpad and function row change how often you touch the display or open Control Center, while the palm rest and hinge make long sessions feel more like using a compact laptop. Owners of an older iPad Pro cannot carry the previous keyboard forward to an M4 model.

RTINGS identifies Logitech Combo Touch as the closest lower-cost path and notes that it gives up some of Apple’s premium materials and haptic-trackpad features. Standalone Logitech and Keychron keyboards make more sense when you already have a protective case or need one keyboard for several devices.
Who should buy the M4 iPad Pro Magic Keyboard?
Buy it when these describe your use
- You write, edit documents or work in spreadsheets most days.
- You want a Mac-like pointer workflow without carrying a separate laptop.
- You value a rigid floating hinge, backlit keys and a larger haptic trackpad.
- You want charging through the keyboard while keeping the iPad’s USB-C port available.
- You are willing to pay launch-level premium pricing for one fitted accessory.
Choose something else when these are more important
- Your iPad is primarily a video, reading or drawing device.
- You need a rugged case with enclosed edges.
- You want one keyboard to switch among an iPad, Mac, phone and other devices.
- You type only occasionally and can accept a separate keyboard or a less expensive case.
- You need a full-size layout, navigation cluster or number pad.
Buying checklist
- Identify the iPad. Open Settings > General > About and confirm the model generation and screen size.
- Match the size. Select the 11-inch keyboard for an 11-inch iPad Pro or the 13-inch keyboard for a 13-inch iPad Pro; they are separate products.
- Confirm the generation. Choose the M4/M5-compatible 2024 design. An earlier Magic Keyboard will not fit an M4 iPad Pro.
- Check software. Update to iPadOS 17.4 or later before troubleshooting the accessory.
- Compare the live price. Use the $299/$349 figures only as the US launch MSRP reference from May 2024, not as a current retailer quote.

The 2024 Magic Keyboard is the most convincing way to turn an M4 iPad Pro into a laptop-style workstation. Its aluminum palm rest, floating hinge, reliable backlit scissor keys, function row and larger haptic trackpad address the frustrations that made earlier iPad keyboard covers feel like compromises. Independent testing finds excellent build quality and good typing, while also confirming the compact layout.
Buy the exact 11-inch or 13-inch version if daily typing and pointer work are the reason you chose an iPad Pro. Skip it for media consumption, drawing-first use, rugged protection or multi-device keyboard sharing; in those cases, Logitech Combo Touch or a separate keyboard offers a more sensible balance.
