LumiWatch is a wrist-worn research prototype that projects an interactive interface onto the forearm. Its depth sensors track finger movement so the arm can act as a coarse touch surface, expanding interaction beyond a conventional smartwatch’s small display. Researchers presented it at CHI 2018; the cited project materials describe a prototype, not a retail product.
What LumiWatch does
Instead of putting every control on a tiny watch screen, LumiWatch projects graphics onto the wearer’s forearm and lets the wearer interact with them. The LumiWatch authors reported roughly 40 cm² of interactive surface area, while Carnegie Mellon University’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute described that as more than five times the area of a typical smartwatch display. Those are researchers’ comparisons, not a claim that every watch has the same display area or that projected skin is as usable as a larger glass screen.
The project was presented by researchers associated with Carnegie Mellon University’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute and ASU Tech. Its contribution was an integrated wrist-worn projection and sensing system, rather than a software feature for an ordinary smartwatch.
How projection and touch tracking work
Projecting onto a curved arm
A scanned-laser projector casts the interface from a shallow angle onto the forearm. Because an arm is curved and the projection does not strike it straight on, the graphics pipeline rectifies the image to account for the non-flat surface. The result is intended to keep projected controls usable across that curved area.

Tracking a finger
A ten-element time-of-flight depth-sensing array monitors finger position and supports continuous two-dimensional tracking. LumiWatch therefore combines projected graphics with sensing: the projector displays the interface, while the sensor array detects where the finger is moving. Carnegie Mellon’s project description includes tap and swipe interaction.
Calibration and unlocking
The paper’s figure description identifies a rapid projection-calibration step before apps can be used. LumiWatch also uses swipe-to-unlock to help prevent incidental contact with the arm from activating the interface. These steps illustrate that arm projection is not simply a matter of turning on a beam: the system has to align the image to the surface and distinguish deliberate input from casual touch.

What the larger projected area changes—and what it does not
A projected 40 cm² gives designers more room for controls and content than a typical smartwatch display, which is the central appeal of the approach. But area alone does not establish equivalent usability. The surface is curved skin rather than a fixed glass panel, and the project descriptions do not establish how visibility compares across different lighting conditions or how robust the experience would be in everyday use. The researchers evaluated touch accuracy and projection visibility, but the project summaries do not provide enough detail to give responsible evaluation scores.

Natural and balanced. Bright and colorful. More cinematic. With 6 picture modes, it's easy to find a clear, enjoyable look that fits both the content and your personal taste.
The prototype also trades a small, familiar watch face for a substantially larger wrist-worn unit. The Future Interfaces Group reported 50 × 41 × 17 mm dimensions and compared the prototype with a 42 mm Apple Watch Series 3 measuring 43 × 36 × 11 mm. Its reported projector runtime was one hour of continuous operation, or one day of occasional use. These figures characterize the research build, not a current smartwatch battery-life benchmark.
Is LumiWatch available to buy?
The cited LumiWatch paper and project pages describe a custom research prototype; they do not establish a retail LumiWatch, replacement part, or compatible accessory. It should not be treated as a current shopping option. A generic smartwatch or mini-projector is not shown by these sources to reproduce LumiWatch’s combination of arm projection and finger tracking.

How LumiWatch relates to SkinTrack
SkinTrack is another research effort involving arm-based interaction, but it is a different system. Carnegie Mellon’s 2016 account describes a ring that produces a high-frequency signal and electrodes in a watch strap that locate a finger on the hand and arm. Unlike LumiWatch, SkinTrack does not project an interface onto the skin, and it is not an accessory for LumiWatch.
The 99% touch-detection accuracy and mean touch-location error of 7.6 mm reported in that account are SkinTrack results only. They should not be attributed to LumiWatch.
