Use Google Photos if you want quick, familiar edits tied to your photo library, with browser access and nothing extra to buy. Choose Luminar if you specifically want its separate ChromeOS editing app, with its AI enhancement, retouching and RAW tools, and you accept a subscription. This comparison rests on published feature descriptions from Google and Skylum, not hands-on testing, so it recommends by workflow rather than claiming one editor produces better images.

What “Googlebook” means here

“Googlebook” refers to Google’s newly described class of ChromeOS laptops, and Google’s store listing names photo-editing apps as part of what that hardware offers. Both editors discussed here run on ChromeOS, so the practical questions are about app versions and device eligibility, not a new platform.

Two naming points prevent confusion:

  • Luminar on ChromeOS is the Android/ChromeOS app listed on Google Play as “Luminar: Photo Editor & Enhancer”. Skylum separately sells desktop Luminar Neo. Treat them as related products, not identical apps or licenses.
  • Google Photos on a Chromebook comes in two forms: the website (photos.google.com) and the Android app. Their editing tools are not identical.

Side-by-side comparison

Decision axis Luminar on ChromeOS Google Photos
Platform Android and ChromeOS app; the Play listing says ChromeOS devices need Android Runtime support Android app on Chromebook, plus editing on the web with some tools unavailable there
Editing approach AI enhancement, retouching, reshaping and RAW editing, per Skylum’s listing Color and lighting adjustments, filters, crop and other adjustments, plus selected AI tools
Requirements Android 11+ and ChromeOS with Android Runtime support, per the listing; confirm your device and app version Magic Eraser and Unblur in the Chromebook app are Chromebook Plus features; Google’s Magic Eraser instructions specify ChromeOS 118 or later
Wider workflow Skylum says you can start in Luminar Mobile on ChromeOS and continue in desktop Luminar Neo with synced work Shared photo library; Google says edits sync to your account when backup is on
Cost Listing describes one-month and annual subscriptions; no universal price or Googlebook offer is established, so check checkout No paid comparison is established in Google’s help pages; not every feature is available to every user

When Google Photos is the better pick

  • You want to fix a photo and move on: crop, adjust color and lighting, apply a filter.
  • Your photos already live in Google Photos, and you want edits saved to the same library. Google says edits sync when backup is enabled.
  • You want to work from a browser with no install.
  • You want creative extras such as blur/depth, sky effects and collages, which Google lists for the Chromebook app.

Web versus app on a Chromebook

Google documents photo editing on the web but says some tools are missing there and directs users to the Android app. If a tool you expect is absent, switch to the app before concluding your device lacks it.

Magic Eraser and Unblur depend on hardware

Google’s help page states: “Important: Some features, like Magic Eraser and Unblur, are only available for Chromebook Plus users in the Google Photos Android app.” Check that your device is Chromebook Plus and runs ChromeOS 118 or later before counting on them. Don’t assume every Googlebook owner will see these tools. A new laptop isn’t needed for basic editing, only for these specific features.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

When Luminar is the better pick

  • You want a dedicated editor with AI enhancement, retouching and reshaping rather than a library tool with built-in edits.
  • You shoot RAW and the app’s stated RAW editing matters to you.
  • You plan to continue on a desktop with Luminar Neo, using Skylum’s described Mobile-to-Neo sync.

Check before you subscribe

  • Confirm your device meets the listing’s Android 11+ and Android Runtime requirement.
  • Read the subscription terms at checkout; the monthly and annual options are described, but current regional prices and any Googlebook bundle are not established.
  • Don’t assume every Luminar Neo desktop feature exists in the ChromeOS app, or that a Neo license covers the mobile app. Neither is confirmed by the official pages.

Image quality: what can’t be said

Neither Google nor Skylum publishes controlled comparative image-quality tests in the official material reviewed, and no benchmark figure applies to this choice. Pick on the tools you need and how you work. Because plans, tools, device eligibility and regional availability change, confirm the current details in each app before committing.

Quick decision guide

  • Casual fixes, library-centered: Google Photos.
  • Want Magic Eraser or Unblur: Google Photos on a Chromebook Plus device, in the Android app.
  • RAW or heavier AI retouching: Luminar.
  • Desktop follow-through: Luminar, with Luminar Neo.
  • Undecided: start with Google Photos, which is already part of your library workflow, and add Luminar if you hit its limits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Luminar on a Chromebook?

Google Play lists Luminar as an Android and ChromeOS app for ChromeOS devices with Android Runtime support and Android 11 or later. Check that your specific device and app version meet current requirements.

Can I use both on the same Googlebook?

Yes in principle, since Google Photos is available on Chromebook and Luminar is listed for ChromeOS. Many people can edit in Luminar and keep the finished photos in their Google Photos library.
