Its launch media also packaged Firefox as a Snap, which Lubuntu said could take longer to start on first run. The project announced three years of support through April 2025; that period has ended.
What was Lubuntu 22.04 LTS?
Lubuntu 22.04 LTS was the 22nd Lubuntu release and the project’s eighth release with LXQt as its default desktop. Lubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavor built around LXQt; the project describes its goal as providing a lightweight but functional Ubuntu-based distribution. That describes the project’s positioning, not a measured performance advantage: the release announcement gives no comparative benchmark or minimum hardware specification.
Ubuntu lists 21 April 2022 as the release date for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. The Lubuntu-specific release announcement is the best guide to this flavor’s desktop, packages, and support promise: Lubuntu 22.04 LTS is Released!
What was new in the original release?
LXQt desktop and included software
The initial release media included LXQt 0.17.0 and Qt 5.15.3. Its other listed software versions were Firefox 98.0.2, LibreOffice 7.3.2, VLC 3.0.16, Featherpad 1.0.1, and Discover Software Center 5.24.4. These are launch-media versions, not a description of the packages on a system that has since received updates.

Firefox was distributed as a Snap
Firefox 98.0.2 came as a Snap in the original media. Lubuntu’s release note cautioned that startup could take longer, particularly on first launch and in a live session, while the confined environment was set up and the Snap’s compressed filesystem was decompressed. The project said normal execution and later starts within the same session were not affected in the way first startup was. This is the project’s release-time explanation, not a current performance test.
Calamares installer
Lubuntu used Calamares rather than Ubiquity, which the project said was used by most other Ubuntu flavors. The initial 22.04 media included Calamares 3.2.41.1. In the full or erase-disk installation flow, the default was a 512 MB swapfile, with an option to install without swap. Those details apply to the release media described by Lubuntu, not necessarily every later image.

Is Lubuntu 22.04 still supported?
No—not under the support period announced specifically for Lubuntu 22.04. The project said the release would be supported for three years, until April 2025; that deadline had passed by 30 September 2026.
Ubuntu’s general 22.04 notes distinguish product support periods: they give five years through April 2027 for Ubuntu Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core, and three years for the remaining flavors. The five-year date for those named products should not be treated as Lubuntu’s support deadline. Ubuntu’s release-history table also contains lifecycle dates for Ubuntu 22.04 as a release; those are not a replacement for Lubuntu’s flavor-specific statement. See the Ubuntu release cycle and Ubuntu release history for their respective scopes.

What is the difference between Lubuntu 22.04 and 22.04.2?
The main practical difference was the installation media: 22.04.2 was refreshed media intended to reduce the amount of updating after installation. Lubuntu said an existing system receiving regular updates was already at the 22.04.2 state, so the point-release number did not require reinstalling.
| Detail | Initial 22.04 media | 22.04.2 media |
|---|---|---|
| Calamares installer | 3.2.41.1 | 3.2.60 |
| Kernel stack identified by Lubuntu | 5.15 GA | 5.19 HWE |
| Practical distinction | Original installation image | Updated image intended to reduce post-install updates |
The installer and kernel entries describe the media identified in Lubuntu’s announcements. For an already-installed system, regular updates—not downloading a newer ISO—were the stated route to the point-release state. See Lubuntu 22.04.2 point-release announcement.

What should you check before upgrading from Lubuntu 20.04?
Lubuntu’s release note called out two kinds of possible change for people upgrading from 20.04 with LXQt: a customized Openbox configuration path and packages no longer included by default. Review these before beginning an upgrade, especially if you rely on the settings or applications concerned.
Preserve a customized Openbox settings file
If you customized ~/.config/openbox/lxqt-rc.xml, the project instructed users to copy it to ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml for the upgrade.

Check packages that may be removed
The release note said trojita, fcitx, and k3b were no longer included in new installations and could be removed during an upgrade unless marked as manually installed beforehand. If you need any of them, check the project’s versioned Lubuntu manual and confirm how to preserve the package before upgrading.
Should you install Lubuntu 22.04 now?
Its release details may still matter when maintaining or identifying an existing installation, but the announced support window has expired. For a new installation or a system that needs ongoing support, check Lubuntu’s current supported-release information before choosing an image; do not infer current support from the “LTS” label or from Ubuntu Desktop’s longer support period.
