For a home-lab boot drive, choose a SATA SSD or NVMe SSD that your system can boot from; there is no evidence-based current “best” model in the available information. Check your motherboard or server manual for the supported connector, protocol and firmware boot support first, then compare capacity, write endurance, warranty and current price. Intel’s Optane line is a legacy option, not a dependable new-drive recommendation.

What changed after Intel discontinued Optane?

Intel said it planned to cease future Optane product development in its Q2 2022 earnings context. The company described a transition of existing products through end of life; its support update said existing products continued to be sold at that time and that five-year warranty terms from date of sale were unchanged. That statement does not establish current availability or warranty coverage for a particular used drive. Intel’s Optane support update

Discontinuation did not mean that every product immediately lost all support. Intel’s lifecycle listing gives dates by model. For the Optane SSD P1600X, Intel lists end of life (EOL) as March 22, 2024, and end of interactive support (EOIS) as December 31, 2024. The listing was last reviewed July 2, 2026. Check the specific product’s entry rather than assuming that a general Optane announcement determines its support status. Intel Optane product lifecycle information

Choose the interface your host can boot from

Intel identifies both SATA and NVMe SSDs as server boot-drive options. That does not mean every home-lab motherboard or server supports both, or can boot from every connector that physically fits. Check the host’s manual and compatibility list for the drive interface, protocol and firmware boot support before comparing particular SSDs. Intel boot-drive brief

Drive category What to verify Capacity, endurance, warranty and price
SATA SSD Whether the host supports SATA storage and can boot from the intended port or bay. Compare the capacity you need for the OS and local logs, the manufacturer’s endurance rating and warranty, and current price for the exact model. No current model-level values are established here.
NVMe SSD Whether the host supports NVMe on the intended connector and whether its firmware can boot from it. Compare the same model-specific capacity, endurance, warranty and current-price details. No current model-level values are established here.
Optane SSD P1600X (legacy/used) Confirm the exact product, host compatibility and boot support. Inspect the individual used drive and establish its condition and any remaining warranty before purchase. Intel’s boot-drive brief lists 58 GB and 118 GB M.2 capacities. The product is end of life; present availability, condition and remaining warranty are not established. Intel boot-drive brief Intel lifecycle information

Match capacity and endurance to the boot workload

A boot drive may need less capacity than a typical data-center SSD, as Intel’s boot-drive brief notes. Size it for your operating system, updates, logs and other files you deliberately keep locally; do not assume that a small drive is suitable without checking the OS and workload requirements. Intel boot-drive brief

Endurance matters most when the boot volume receives sustained or frequent writes, such as local logs or workloads stored on the same device. Compare the manufacturer’s endurance specification and warranty for the exact SSD model against your expected write workload. Intel’s older Optane DC FAQ gives a historical vendor comparison: up to 60 drive writes per day (DWPD) for five years for Optane DC SSDs, versus 3 DWPD for five years for what it calls a typical high-end enterprise NAND SSD. Those figures apply to that FAQ’s product context, not to SSDs in general or to current SATA and NVMe products. Intel Optane DC SSD FAQ

Western Digital 500GB WD Green SN3000 NVMe Internal SSD - Solid State Drive - Gen4 PCIe, M.2 2280, Up to 5,000 MB/s - WDS500G4G0E
  • PCIe Gen4 performance improves slow boot times and launches apps faster at speeds up to 5,000MB/s. (Based on read speed, unless otherwise stated. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance will vary depending on host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.)
  • Storage up to 2TB* keeps your photos, videos and other important files within reach. (1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1 TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less, depending on operating environment.)
  • Slim M.2 SSD design utilizes a single-sided M.2 2280 to be compatible with thin laptops and small PCs.
  • Multitask with breathtaking responsiveness, transfer files faster, and improve your workflow with NVMe and Western Digital nCache 4.0 Technologies.
  • Move your data to your new drive with free downloadable Acronis True Image for Western Digital data migration software.

The same FAQ says writes, rather than reads, cause SSD endurance issues in that product context. Treat this as guidance about write endurance—not a guarantee that any SSD will be reliable under every workload. Intel Optane DC SSD FAQ

Is an Optane Memory module a boot SSD?

Not necessarily. Intel describes Optane Memory M Series as an acceleration solution positioned between the processor and slower storage; that is different from an SSD used as a storage device. Do not assume that an Optane Memory module is a standalone boot drive. Identify the exact product and verify that the host supports its intended use. Intel Optane Memory M Series support information

A practical buying checklist

  1. Find the host’s manual and compatibility list. Confirm the supported connector, storage protocol and firmware boot capability for the specific slot, port or bay.
  2. Decide what belongs on the boot volume. Allow for the operating system, updates and any logs or other files you intend to keep there.
  3. Compare exact SSD models on endurance rating and warranty terms, checking the manufacturer’s current specifications rather than applying Optane’s historical figures to NAND drives.
  4. Check current listings and price for the model that meets the host and workload requirements. Availability and price are time-sensitive; no current model or price has been verified here.
  5. If considering a used Optane SSD, verify the exact model’s lifecycle information, the individual drive’s condition, remaining warranty and compatibility before buying.

What can—and cannot—be ranked

The evidence supports SATA and NVMe as boot-drive categories, not a current winner among specific low-capacity SSDs. A model ranking would require current manufacturer specifications and listings, plus confirmation that the models work with the intended host. Without those checks, a category-first choice is more reliable than a blanket recommendation.
