A specialist may be able to investigate whether you can reconstruct a forgotten password using devices and information you still have. That is not the same as recovering a missing seed phrase, reversing a fraudulent transfer, or restoring access to every lost wallet. A March 21, 2024, SecurityWeek profile described Praefortis as a new firm offering password investigations, but it did not report independently verified recovery results. Treat its methods and fee terms as historical company claims, not guarantees or current terms.
What Praefortis said it would investigate
SecurityWeek reported that Praefortis was founded in March 2024 by CEO Jim Carden and CTO Wesley Brandi. The article described Carden’s investigative and digital-forensics background and Brandi’s software-development experience based on interviews and the founders’ accounts; it did not independently audit their credentials or the firm’s work.
The company described examining the available evidence around a wallet, potentially including hard drives, phones, thumb drives, hardware and software wallets, and information supplied by the owner. It said it used custom tools. Carden declined to disclose technical details. He told SecurityWeek, “When you do an investigation into digital evidence in the cyber realm, you must investigate the whole corpus of data that surrounds your subject.” That statement describes the firm’s approach as presented in the article; it does not establish that the method succeeds.
The profile said Praefortis preferred to work through law firms, with a law firm engaging the company on a client’s behalf and overseeing payment. That is a description of the model reported in March 2024, not confirmation that the arrangement remains available or applies to every case.

Which wallet problem do you have?
Recovery offers are not interchangeable. A forgotten password may leave clues on devices or in records you still control. Other problems can require different remedies—or have no practical recovery path.
- Forgotten wallet password: The wallet or its encrypted data may still exist, and a specialist might investigate whether the password can be reconstructed from available evidence. Success is not assured.
- Missing seed phrase or private key: The SecurityWeek profile describes password investigation, not a general way to recreate a missing seed phrase or private key. Do not assume a password-recovery service can solve this problem.
- Stolen wallet or unauthorized transfer: Investigating access credentials is different from reversing a transaction or retrieving assets sent to someone else. The FTC says people whose wallets are stolen or compromised, or who send cryptocurrency to the wrong person, are likely to find no one can step in to recover their funds.
- Exchange or platform failure: That is a separate issue from recovering a password to a wallet you control. The Praefortis profile does not establish a remedy for exchange losses.
The FTC’s guidance is general consumer advice, not a finding about Praefortis or every possible password-reconstruction case. Its warning is important: if you lose the password to a digital wallet, “no one can step in to help you recover your funds” may be the outcome.

What is—and is not—established about results
The SecurityWeek article described the company’s proposed process and its founders’ claims. It did not give a success rate, sample size, independently validated test, audited case outcome, or security certification. There is therefore no basis in that profile for estimating the chance that a particular wallet can be recovered or for ranking Praefortis against other providers. The article also does not establish the firm’s current operating status, geographic eligibility, intake process, or present-day safeguards.
How the reported fee worked
SecurityWeek reported a fee of 10% of the value recovered or $15,000, whichever was lower, with $15,000 as the maximum fee. Those are terms reported in March 2024—not a current quote, a confirmed current policy, or evidence that a recovery will happen. Before engaging any provider, obtain its current fee basis and payment timing in writing, including what happens if the investigation does not recover funds.

How to assess a recovery offer safely
Before handing over a device, wallet material, or personal information, get specific written answers. The profile described a broad evidence review but did not document current data-handling safeguards, so do not infer that a particular practice is in place.
- Confirm the problem in scope: Ask whether the provider handles your exact situation—such as a forgotten password—and what it cannot recover.
- Limit access: Ask which devices, files, credentials, or wallet materials are needed, whether the provider needs physical possession or remote access, and what will be copied.
- Understand data handling: Ask who can see your information, how it is protected and stored, how long it is retained, and when and how it will be deleted.
- Clarify oversight: If a lawyer or other intermediary is proposed, establish who represents you, who contracts with the provider, and who controls payment.
- Get terms in writing: Confirm scope, fees, payment timing, confidentiality, device handling, and what happens if the work produces no recovery.
- Verify independently: Find contact details and background information through sources you locate yourself rather than relying only on a message or link from the person offering recovery.
The FTC warns that recovery scammers target people who have already lost money. Be especially wary of unsolicited contact, demands for upfront fees, and requests for financial or personal information. That warning is not evidence that Praefortis is a scam; it is a reason to scrutinize any offer. The FTC advises consumers to research providers independently and report suspected fraud.
