A 2023 Destructoid ranking, which attributes its times to HowLongToBeat, offers a useful starting point—but its figures are estimates, not a definitive or independently timed leaderboard.
How to read the SNES completion-time estimates
Destructoid’s list, published October 2, 2023, reports HowLongToBeat-attributed completion-time estimates for 20 games. The visible entries below range from 25 to 33 hours. The article does not establish game-level sample sizes or specify a consistent completion category for every figure, so the numbers should not be treated as directly comparable measurements of main-story-only play, completionist runs, or total possible playtime.
That distinction matters on the SNES. A role-playing game’s campaign may be measured differently from a farm simulator or a city-building game, where play can continue beyond a conventional ending. Optional content, play style, version, and what a player considers “complete” can all affect how long a game takes.
Long SNES games in the 2023 ranking
| Game | Reported estimate | What kind of play it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Secret of Mana | 25 hours | Action RPG campaign |
| Chrono Trigger | 26 hours | RPG campaign |
| Robotrek | 26 hours | RPG campaign |
| Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals | 29 hours | RPG campaign |
| Harvest Moon | 29 hours | Farm simulation; play may be less tied to a single campaign endpoint |
| EarthBound | 30 hours | RPG campaign |
| The 7th Saga | 30 hours | RPG campaign |
| Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen | 31 hours | Strategy RPG campaign |
| SimCity 2000 | 33 hours | Open-ended city-building simulation |
All figures are the estimates Destructoid published in 2023 and attributed to HowLongToBeat; they are not independent playthrough timings. The available ranking does not state the completion category for each game, so its hours are best used to identify candidates for a long play session, not to predict precisely how long your own run will take. Destructoid’s full list includes twenty games.

Which games suit different definitions of “long”?
For a substantial story campaign
Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Robotrek, Lufia II, EarthBound, The 7th Saga, and Ogre Battle are the clearest picks here if you want a game with a story or campaign to work through. Their reported estimates run from 25 to 31 hours, but the source does not say whether optional content or a particular completion standard is included.
For play that can extend beyond a conventional ending
Harvest Moon and SimCity 2000 are different from a straightforward RPG campaign: farming and city-building can make play feel ongoing, and a single completion-time number may not capture how long a player chooses to continue. Destructoid lists 29 hours for Harvest Moon and 33 for SimCity 2000, but those estimates should not be read as limits on total play.

Why the list is not a universal SNES ranking
The ranking is one dated selection, not a definitive answer for every player or region. Community discussion around long-SNES-game lists includes disagreement over entries such as Chrono Trigger and suggestions that Japan-only strategy RPGs should be considered. Those comments are anecdotal rather than measured evidence, but they underline how a list can change depending on regional releases, genre, optional content, replay, and the meaning of “complete.”
Geography is especially relevant for RPGs. The SNES library includes Japanese-only releases as well as games released in North America and Europe. Time Extension’s catalog records regional release dates for examples including Terranigma, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy III, Secret of Mana, and Lufia II. A ranking that does not specify its regional scope may omit games a reader can access in another region or through a translation, and those versions need not provide a like-for-like comparison. Time Extension’s SNES RPG catalog provides regional release context.
