Loki is an open-source, Storybook-focused tool that you run and maintain in your own environment. Percy is BrowserStack’s hosted visual testing and review service, with a centralized workflow for comparing snapshots and approving changes. Choose based on who should manage rendering and baselines, which platforms you need to test, and how your team reviews changes—not on unsupported assumptions about which is faster or more accurate.

How Loki and Percy differ

Both tools help teams detect visual changes by comparing captured UI with reference snapshots. The main distinction is operational: Loki gives a Storybook-centered CLI workflow built around reference files, while Percy provides hosted capture, comparison, and review.

Decision axis Loki Percy
Operating model Open-source project installed in your development environment; the documented workflow uses reference files and CLI commands. Hosted service with Percy builds, snapshots, and dashboard-based review.
Storybook use Designed specifically for visual regression testing with Storybook. Supports Storybook snapshots within a broader visual testing workflow.
Rendering targets The repository lists Chrome in Docker, Chrome in AWS Lambda, local Chrome, iOS simulator, and Android emulator. BrowserStack documents managed cross-browser rendering and an Automate configuration path for specifying OS and browser settings.
Diff and baseline review Inspect a local diff folder and approve changed references using the CLI workflow. Review builds and snapshots in Percy, then approve intended changes or request fixes.
CI and collaboration Can be integrated into CI; your team manages the execution environment and diff workflow. Documents CI and source-control integration, with shared review and approval.
Ongoing ownership Your team owns setup, dependencies, reference-image storage, and review process. The repository lists Node 16+ as a prerequisite; check its current compatibility guidance before adopting it. Usage and build history depend on plan. Browser renders count separately toward snapshot usage, and managed browser and operating-system versions change over time.

How Loki’s workflow works

Loki’s repository documents a sequence in which you start Storybook or the relevant simulator or emulator, capture reference files, run tests, inspect differences, and approve intentional updates. Loki does not start Storybook or a simulator/emulator itself, so orchestration is part of your own setup.

  1. Start Storybook and any target environment required for your chosen rendering mode.
  2. Capture or update the reference images with loki update.
  3. Run the visual comparison with loki test.
  4. Inspect the resulting diff folder. Investigate unexpected changes rather than approving them automatically.
  5. When a visual change is intentional, update the approved references with loki approve.

The Loki repository describes its aim as “easy setup, no to low maintenance cost, reproducible tests independent of which OS they are run on, runnable on CI and support all platforms storybook does.” That is the project’s stated aim, not an independent guarantee of maintenance effort or reproducibility. The repository also lists Node 16+ and identifies GraphicsMagick, Docker, and Chrome as optional dependencies for particular modes. Check the Loki repository for current requirements and release compatibility before building around those details.

How Percy’s workflow works

Percy captures snapshots during tests and compares them with previously approved baselines. Reviewers can examine visual changes in a build, approve intended differences, or request fixes. Builds can be integrated with source control and CI, which makes review part of a team workflow rather than only a local diff-inspection step. See BrowserStack’s Percy documentation for current integration and workflow details.

Browser coverage and rendering consistency

Percy documents configurable browser selection and cross-browser visual testing. Each browser snapshot counts separately toward monthly screenshot usage. With Percy-managed rendering, BrowserStack manages fixed operating systems and updates browser and OS versions over time. If you need specific OS and browser versions to compare platform rendering differences, BrowserStack documents an Automate configuration route.

Browser differences can change fonts, native controls, scrollbars, and the number of visual differences detected. Decide which browser and OS combinations matter to your users, and keep that target set consistent when comparing builds. Confirm current browser availability and usage terms in the Percy documentation before estimating monthly snapshot consumption.

Which tool should you choose?

Choose Loki when

  • Your visual tests are centered on Storybook and you want an open-source CLI workflow.
  • You prefer to manage the rendering environment, reference files, and CI integration yourself.
  • You need one of the rendering targets listed by the project, such as a local browser, Docker Chrome, simulator, or emulator, and can maintain that setup.
  • Your team is comfortable reviewing local diffs and explicitly approving updated references.

Choose Percy when

  • You want hosted snapshot comparison and a shared review-and-approval workflow.
  • You need documented cross-browser testing and want BrowserStack to manage the Percy rendering environment.
  • Your team benefits from build and source-control integration for visual review.
  • You have checked the plan’s snapshot usage and browser-rendering options against the coverage you require.

Neither tool is established by the cited product documentation as objectively faster, more accurate, or cheaper in total. Those outcomes depend on your tests, infrastructure, review practices, browser matrix, and plan or maintenance costs. Compare them using the same components, target browsers, and change-review criteria in your own CI workflow.

Practical selection checklist

  1. Define the test surface. List the Storybook stories and UI states whose regressions matter; specify whether you need browser-only coverage or simulator/emulator targets.
  2. Choose environment ownership. Decide whether your team wants to operate rendering and reference storage (Loki) or use a hosted review workflow (Percy).
  3. Set the browser matrix. For Percy, account for each browser snapshot separately in monthly usage and determine whether managed versions meet your needs. For Loki, verify the current support and setup for each target you plan to use.
  4. Plan baseline approvals. Identify who can approve intended visual changes and how reviewers will distinguish expected design updates from regressions.
  5. Validate in CI. Run a representative set of tests in the environment you will use for routine builds. Check how failures and diffs surface to developers before expanding coverage.
  6. Estimate full operational cost. Include Percy’s applicable plan and snapshot usage, or Loki’s environment, dependency, storage, and maintenance effort. The available documentation does not provide a reliable independent total-cost comparison.

ScreenshotNeo as an alternative for capturing web pages

If your requirement is capturing rendered web pages through an API rather than testing Storybook stories in Loki or Percy’s visual-review workflow, try ScreenshotNeo first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it is not a drop-in replacement for either tool’s Storybook baseline and review workflow.

For an API capture, one GET request can return an image or PDF. Example using cURL:
